CBD is becoming big business while creams, ointments, and lotions have made certain companies tens of millions of dollars. It is only natural then, that suppliers are selling CBD cream and promoting it as nature’s best pain reliever. There are a variety of scientific studies that show CBD is an excellent way to alleviate pain.

One of the most recent examples is a huge report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Of course, there is a big difference between ointment and oil so let’s find out if you should purchase CBD cream for pain.

What is CBD Cream?

You won’t be shocked to learn that it is merely a cream made from CBD oil extracted from the cannabis plant. The oil is blended with a variety of ingredients to create a CBD cream you can use for pain. If you take a look at the ointment of high-quality CBD suppliers such as PureKana, you’ll notice that the cream has a host of additional ingredients along with CBD.

The PureKana version includes cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut oil, aloe vera, distilled water, citric acid, vitamin E and a few more ingredients.

How Does CBD Cream Differ From CBD Oil?

The obvious difference is that you take CBD oil sublingually while CBD cream is applied to the skin. As a result, CBD cream for pain works a little differently to CBD oil for pain. There are different schools of thought with regards to how long it takes for CBD to take effect depending on the method of consumption.

Most people believe that sublingual consumption results in a faster effect while applying CBD to the skin might take longer but its effects also last longer.

However, other users believe that because you apply CBD cream to the skin, it absorbs faster and offers more targeted pain relief. It is important to note that most CBD creams don’t act transdermally which would mean they pass through the skin and into the bloodstream. Instead, they are absorbed into the top layer of your skin which is why they are classified as ‘topicals.’

When you take CBD cream for pain, you’re taking advantage of the cannabinoid’s anti-inflammatory properties. One study compared the levels of inflammation in marijuana smokers to those who have never touched weed.

The study involved 9,000 people and analyzed the influence of marijuana on C-reactive protein (CRP) which is known to be a significant marker of inflammation often linked with an increased risk of heart disease. Researchers found that marijuana smokers (who had smoked in the previous 30 days) had lower levels of CRP than people who didn’t smoke marijuana.

What Are The Benefits of Using CBD Cream For Pain?

pain cream

CBD cream can help alleviate pain from several sources and is more effective for this purpose than CBD oil which offers more general relief. Whether you need something to soothe your horrible sunburn or a way to cope with the crippling pain of arthritis, CBD cream should be your go-to product.

While CBD oil does a fine job of reducing stress, anxiety and the effects of chronic pain, it doesn’t have the same localized effect as CBD cream for pain.

For example, if you have severe shoulder pain, CBD cream is a much better option than oil because it will get to work on that area immediately. The CBD in the topical combines with the CB2 receptors in our skin. As it doesn’t reach the bloodstream, it is best used for localized pain since it doesn’t offer full-body pain relief.

Rather than being a downside, the ability of CBD cream to focus on one area means it is perfect for use on joint pains. When you rub CBD cream on your joints, it uses its anti-inflammatory properties to provide rapid and long-lasting pain relief in a specific area. As a result, you benefit from a soothing sensation on swollen joints which should lead to improved mobility. As well as being the ideal solution for people who have arthritis, CBD cream may help with the following skin conditions:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Skin infections
  • Rashes
  • Burns

As the vast majority of CBD creams from reputable companies such as CWhemp and GreenRoads contain essential oils, they soothe the skin and provide genuinely useful medicinal qualities. There are numerous forms of CBD creams for pain available including balms, lotions, oils, rubs, and bio-freezes.

Final Thoughts on CBD Cream for Pain

It is a fact that too many Americans are taking prescription painkillers and as the opioid epidemic is proving, these drugs cause almost as many problems as they solve. If you are suffering from joint or muscular pain, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD cream mean it is the perfect weapon against pain. It won’t cause side effects, it isn’t addictive, and it provides fast pain relief.

    CBD Extra Strength Cream

Re-injured an old racing injury in my hip while lifting my 140 lb Pyr. In Chiropractic therapy, but now using extra strength CBD Cream along with good old OTC Advil. On a normal day, getting out of bed and standing up is optional (like a rod sticking in my hip). Within 15 minutes after applying topically, the pain eases off to about 25%. Within an hour after dressing and taking Advil I can do a pretty normal day. I do apply it at about 3:30 AM, just to get comfortable during sleep.

    Chronic arthritis relief

I use bio freeze gel on my arthritic joints and love it. Have been able to discard other pain prescriptions. I keep them locked away and in the ladt year have only used them twice. I also use the oil for a 1-2 punch. I have chronic pain but with the use of the cbd items. I can function and have a clear mind.

      Replying on Bio-Freeze to Mary

I have used and still do Bio-Freeze but no help really for arthritis. Good for muscle soreness
and little pains, but that’s about it. For Osteoarthritis, need something more powerful and lasting.
I am going to try this product to see what it might do. Nothing so far, including a turmeric salve, has helped.

I tried the Green Roads cream. Made my wrists stop hurting for the first time in what has been a constantly painful year for my joints.

My joint pain is chronic, but this stuff seriously helps. I haven’t found that it helps as much with muscles as with joints, but that’s my preference anyways. It still does help with muscle pain tho.

Smells super good too! I could immediately tell there was chamomile in it(:

is this CBD cream and Oil ok to be used in conjunction with Amitripyline 10mg? Woould like to come off the tablets if the cream and Oil work?

    1. Lynda Purdy, DC
CBD for relief depression and anxiety

It is unlikely that CBD would have any interaction with your current medication other than to likely decrease your need for Amitryptiline. Though that medication like all in its class must be weaned off slowly to avoid serious withdrawal effects and should be discussed with your prescribing doctor.

  9. Deanna Zalta

I’m looking for a pain cream with CBD oil extracted using CO2 from the hemp plant (flower, leaves, stem) w/o THC or only trace amount, and not hemp oil from the hemp seeds. Labels are very confusing. Thanks

    1. Elena

I’m pretty sure Green Roads used that method and they are THC free products!!! I would definitely recommend them! And they have a stronger 300mg pain cream as well

The creams do work! Recently switched and I am seeing some great results too. I tend to get cracked skin.

      1. Joan Smith

Looked on the PureKana’s site for the 600mg. of CBD blood orange scented cream for I wanted to buy it but they don’t have it. They just have a menthol (which I hate) ointment.
