Who Is Charlotte’s Web?

Charlotte’s Web is a family-owned company founded by the seven Stanley Brothers: Josh, Austin, Jared, Jordan, John, Jesse, and Joel, in 2011. With its HQ in Boulder, Colorado, CW cultivates the hemp used in its substantial range of products.

It quickly became one of the best-known brands in the CBD industry due to how it helped Charlotte Figi, a young girl with Dravet’s syndrome. Charlotte’s Web got so big that in 2018, it was listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange. The brand acquired Abacus Health in 2020 and expanded into Israel and Canada the following year.

However, it hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for CW. Its share price plummeted as COVID massively impacted the CBD industry. Nonetheless, Charlotte’s Web remains a huge name, and we’re delighted to have the chance to review its products.

WayofLeaf’s Top 3 Favorite Charlotte’s Web Products

The range of Charlotte’s Web products keeps growing to the point where if we did in-depth reviews of everything, it would take an hour to read this guide! Instead, we chose to run the rule over three of the brand’s most popular products.

Summary:

CW began with its Original Formula but has expanded its range significantly. These days, you can buy Charlotte’s Web CBD oil in the following concentrations:

  • 7mg CBD/ml
  • 17mg CBD/ml
  • 25mg CBD/ml (Starter Size, THC Free)
  • 50mg CBD/ml
  • 60mg CBD/ml

However, we felt that it was best to analyze the product that “started an industry,” according to Charlotte’s Web. Unlike the rest of its range, which utilizes CO2 extraction, the Original Formula uses alcohol extraction and involves creating labor-intensive small batches. According to the brand, the result is a premium-quality oil that contains a huge concentration of phytocannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and other compounds per serving.

The Original Formula contains 50mg of CBD per ml of liquid, and you can purchase a 30ml or 100ml bottle. Two flavor options exist, Olive Oil (Natural) and Mint Chocolate.

The mint chocolate flavor has a pleasant, sweet yet refreshing taste and is certainly palatable. It begins with a subtle hint of mint chocolate, and unlike other brands, CW manages to avoid creating an overpowering mint taste. There’s a slight hemp aftertaste, but nothing that should put you off.

You can’t argue with 50mg of CBD per ml. One should feel a heightened sense of relaxation, and most users are generally pleased with the effects. Charlotte’s Web uses high-quality hemp in all its products, so we aren’t surprised that this product is as good as advertised.

The brand’s visible in-house testing of the 100ml bottle showed a CBD content of 57mg per ml, well above what is claimed. The total cannabinoid content is an impressive 66mg, including almost 4mg of CBC per ml. The COA shows evidence of testing for pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.

Charlotte’s Web provides updated lab reports; all you have to do is enter the lot number of your product on the “Batch Reports.” This is good news because the COA available on the site is dated November 2019.

Summary:

Charlotte’s Web has a fine selection of CBD gummies. You can choose from the following:

  • Daily Wellness
  • Immunity
  • Calm
  • THC-Free
  • Sleep
  • Muscle Recovery

These products have different active ingredients. For instance, the Muscle Recovery Charlotte’s Web CBD gummies contain ginger and turmeric, whereas the Sleep gummies contain melatonin. In each case, there is 5mg of CBD per gummy, and CW recommends a serving size of two. You can purchase 30-count, 60-count, or 90-count containers.

The Calm CBD gummies contain lemon balm as the main accompaniment. A member of the mint family, lemon balm has been used as a calming herb for centuries and is linked with a reduction in stress and anxiety. Other ingredients include tapioca syrup, sugar, and natural flavors.

The lemon-lime flavor is okay, although plenty of tastier CBD gummies are on the market. Then again, you must remember that the high level of hemp compounds means there will always be a hint of hemp. CW seems to have avoided including many unhealthy ingredients (even though sugar is involved).

A major downside of these gummies is the relatively low CBD concentration. 5mg of cannabidiol per gummy simply isn’t enough. Even a two-gummy serving provides 10mg of CBD, well below the 20-25mg you get per gummy with other brands. Yes, this product provides a semblance of calm, but the effects aren’t as noticeable as with Charlotte’s Web’s CBD oil, for example.

The available COA shows a version of the product created in January 2021. Each serving contains 13mg of CBD, 30% higher than what’s on the label. There is also 83mg of lemon balm, 8mg more than what CW says.

What We Loved About This Product
  • A high level of the active ingredient, lemon balm
  • Allows for easy dosing
  • Several other options, including gummies for sleep and muscle recovery
What We Didn’t Love
  • The CBD concentration is a little on the low side
  • Fairly expensive

Summary:

The Charlotte’s Web CBDMEDIC range of products is a series of topicals designed to offer short-term pain relief for muscles and joints. It sells the following:

  • Arthritis Aches and Pain Relief Ointment
  • Arthritis Aches and Pain Relief Cream
  • Back and Neck Pain Relief Ointment
  • Active Sport Pain Relief Stick
  • Muscle and Joint Pain Relief Spray
  • Muscle and Joint Pain Relief Ointment
  • Massage Therapy CBD Oil for Pain Relief

Barring the massage therapy product, which has 200mg of hemp extract, the rest of the range has 600mg. Their additional ingredients and textures differentiate them. For instance, the muscle and joint pain relief products contain clove oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and other essential oils.

The arthritis aches and pain relief items have lavender oil, jojoba seed oil, and frankincense oil, among other things. Also, there are differing concentrations of camphor and menthol. The arthritis product contains 10% of each, for instance, while the muscle and joint pain products have 10% menthol and 3.1% camphor.

Apply the CBD cream or ointment to the affected area every few hours. Those who use these products claim they ease sore joints and muscles. The arthritis ointment absorbs into the skin well and could help users experience less pain while completing everyday activities.

The in-house COAs for Charlotte’s Web’s CBD creams and ointments seem to focus more on the topicals that aren’t part of the CBDMEDIC range.

What We Loved About This Product
  • The soothing feeling when applied to the skin
  • Doesn’t leave a sticky residue on the hands
  • Absorbs into the skin easily

Charlotte’s Web Q + A: What Our Readers Wanted to Know

Charlotte’s Web is one of the best-known brands in the industry. However, not everyone is familiar with its history and processes. Here are some questions about CW asked by curious consumers, along with the answers.

Where Does Charlotte’s Web Source Its Hemp?

Charlotte’s Web cultivates its hemp on family farms in Colorado, Kentucky, and Oregon. As a result, it has complete control over what goes into its products. The brand oversees production from seed to sale and says it only uses the plant’s highest quality parts: the flowers and stems.

CW ensures it thoroughly tests the hemp’s soil and claims to use safe and sustainable growing practices. It practices organic cultivation practices, although it doesn’t have USDA Organic Certification.

Who Did the Brand Name Itself After?

Charlotte’s Web tries to honor the memory of Charlotte Figi every day. In 2013, the Stanley Brothers and their company shot to fame after Charlotte’s remarkable story was aired on national television in a documentary called Weed. She had a condition called Dravet syndrome and suffered from hundreds of grand mal seizures each week.

However, after using CBD oil created by the Stanley Brothers, Charlotte experienced a significant decrease in the frequency and intensity of her seizures. Indeed, she only had a handful of seizures each month while on CBD, which generally occurred while she was asleep. The CBD came from a marijuana strain called Hippie’s Disappointment, which the Stanleys later renamed Charlotte’s Web after the young girl.

Tragically, Charlotte died in April 2020, but she will never be forgotten.

Is Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) Extraction Safe?

Generally, IPA extraction is safe when performed by experts such as Charlotte’s Web. Isopropyl alcohol is less flammable and toxic than other solvents used for extraction, such as hexane and butane. CW uses IPA extraction in its Original Formula CBD oil, and the lab report clearly shows that the product passes the test for residual solvent.

Who Lab Tests Charlotte’s Web’s Products?

Charlotte’s Web performs in-house testing in Boulder, Colorado. It tests for cannabinoids, microbials, residual solvents, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and pesticides. Breanna Lash and Amber Pinnell were responsible for approving the testing on the lab reports we viewed.

While CW is a reputable brand, we always prefer to see third-party lab reports to remove conflicts of interest. The COAs themselves are certainly detailed, but most relate to products manufactured in 2019 and 2020. Charlotte’s Web should be making updated lab reports available on its website, preferably via testing conducted by a third-party lab.

However, it does give customers the chance to view the COAs of each product they purchase. Go to their lab testing page and enter the lot number to see the lab report.

Can I Only Buy Charlotte’s Web CBD Online?

No! As one of the most popular CBD brands in America, CW is widely available in retail stores. The Store Locator page is handy for those who want to know if  “Charlotte’s Web’s CBD is near me.”

Hundreds of locations throughout the U.S. sell Charlotte’s Web goods. The Store Locator tool enables you to see if there are shops selling products within a certain radius. Of course, you can save yourself the journey by purchasing CW’s products online.

Does Charlotte’s Web Have a Loyalty Program?

Yes. You earn one point for each dollar you spend on the official Charlotte’s Web site, and you get $10 off for every 200 points you earn. Bonuses include:

  • 100 points for your first Charlotte’s Web CBD capsules purchase
  • 100 points for your first topicals purchase
  • 50 points for your first oils purchase
  • 50 points for your first Charlotte’s Web CBD gummies purchase
  • 25 points for leaving a review

How to Choose the Right Charlotte’s Web Product

As one of the best-known CBD brands, Charlotte’s Web has a huge customer base. Over the years, the company has expanded its range. Consequently, there is a wide array of reasons why someone would consider using something from CW. Here are three of the most common, along with the most relevant Charlotte’s Web products.

  • Pain Relief: Charlotte’s Web now sells a wide range of CBDMEDIC products on its official website. It is primarily a range of CBD topicals you rub into your skin. There is an ointment, cream, and spray infused with ingredients such as eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and jojoba oil. In general, it is best to try topicals if you want to deal with localized pain. However, you may want to consider Charlotte’s Web capsules, oil, or gummies for potentially longer-lasting relief.
  • Insomnia Relief: CBD could provide help in your quest to get to sleep. Researchers have found that many people’s sleep scores improve after a month of regular CBD use, although they fluctuate over time. It is worth considering CW’s highest concentration CBD oil, which contains 60mg of the cannabinoid per ml if you need help getting to sleep.
  • Manage Everyday Stresses: CBD sellers must always take care when describing the potential benefits of their products. Indeed, many companies have received warning letters from the FDA for making health claims. CW plays it safe by suggesting its products can help manage everyday stresses. One of the best options for this purpose is the brand’s Calm CBD gummies. They are infused with lemon balm to help you feel relaxed yet focused.

What Do Other Customers Have to Say?

Despite becoming one of the best-known brands in the CBD industry, it’s fair to say that CW hasn’t always had things go its way. It currently has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. Overall, there are mixed Charlotte’s Web CBD reviews on third-party sites, although the brand continues to enjoy strong customer support on the official website.

Many of the negative reviews focus on disappointing customer service while acknowledging that the products are of high quality. Customers also say that shipping takes longer than the brand claims. We found CW’s customer service to be just about adequate .

I have never experienced such terrible customer service. I have called twice and emailed twice and no response in two weeks, They offered a 30 day guarantee. I bought 4 items but had a problem with one of them and wanted to send it back but they have not responded. I wish I had read the reviews before I purchased.

Unfortunately the customer service and the website are so terrible – nothing in my life has been this bad – that even the decent product doesn’t make up for it!
Verified

Ordered CW CBD cream earlier this year. I use it for inflammation in my knee and for tendinitis which occasionally acts up in my elbow. Received the product promptly and it works great.
Verified

I have bought their CBD oil, 60 mg/ml, and have found the product useful to control my anxiety at night and to help me get back to sleep. If you order from them, pay the extra for 2nd day air as their ground service via USPS takes about 3 weeks. Due to Covid, their customer service is not good but they will call you back if you leave them your number. CW did pioneer the use of CBD oil so you can trust them.

Additional Charlotte’s Web Products

As we mentioned earlier, Charlotte’s Web sells an impressive range of products. Here is the rest of its range that we didn’t cover above.

  • CBD Capsules: Charlotte’s Web CBD capsules come in concentrations of 15mg and 25mg of CBD per capsule. The brand’s full-spectrum hemp extract and organic extra virgin olive oil are the only ingredients. Choose between the 30-count, 60-count, and 90-count containers.
  • CBD Topicals: Apart from the CBDMEDIC range, you can buy hemp-infused balm or cream. There are also medicated ointments and creams for eczema, acne, and rashes.
  • Canine Products: Charlotte’s Web CBD for dogs range includes hip and joint chews, chews for older dogs, skin health and allergy support chews, and full-spectrum hemp extract drops.
  • THC-Free: If you want to avoid consuming THC, CW has you covered with broad-spectrum gummies and oils.

There are several bundle options designed to help you save a few bucks. These include CBD gummies bundles and gift sets featuring at least two Charlotte’s Web products. Bulk purchasing can lead to savings of up to 20%.

CW also offers a discount of 20% to those who subscribe and agree to receive orders automatically each month. The brand also gives you 25% off your first Autoship order to sweeten the deal.

Wrap-Up: Our Final Thoughts

Ultimately, Charlotte’s Web was one of the biggest CBD brands in the world when it first came onto the scene. It gained a rock-solid reputation as a provider of world-class products from premium-grade hemp. However, the CW star doesn’t shine as brightly these days, as the brand’s customer service standard is regularly called into question.

Charlotte’s Web remains a reputable brand that consumers can trust. It sells an excellent range of CBD products and has recently reduced its prices. However, it faces stiff competition and must continue evolving to remain near the industry’s top.
