Durban Poison Strain

In the day and age of cannabis hybrids and radical experimentation when it comes to genetics, it is a challenge (to put it mildly) to find a true-to-form heirloom indica or sativa. The Durban Poison strain sort of brings us back in history, originating from a long line of African sativas, which makes it one of the most pure, potent, energizing strains on the market.

| While Durban Poison is ‘technically’ a landrace sativa native to South Africa, its genetics have been radically tampered with over the years – making it very hard to find a true heirloom variety.

Authentic Durban Poison wasn’t created by anyone in a lab, or thrown together accidentally. Rather, the ancestor of this strain once grew freely in the windswept plains of present-day South Africa, making it essentially an heirloom marijuana type.

Certainly, Durban Poison proves that weed does not require large amounts of complexity or genetic cross-breeding in order to boast ethereal effects; if you ever have the opportunity to experience a true-to-form landrace Durban, you’ll understand that the strain provides one of the most pleasant – and medicinal – highs known to man.

Simply put, Durban Poison weed is a timeless, iconic classic. With only a handful of other strains maintaining their genetic lineage throughout the course of time, it really can be considered prehistoric cannabis. Find out everything you could ever want to know about this hard-hitting sativa beauty in our complete, updated Durban Poison strain review.

What Is Durban Poison Cannabis?

As mentioned above, Durban Poison is a pure sativa strain with origins stretching back to a single ancestral relative from the south coast of Africa. Pure-grown Durban Poison (which is in fact very hard to find) has a 100% sativa genetic makeup – nothing more, nothing less.

There are few questions about the origins of this spectacular reefer, and the fact remains that Durban Poison is an antique of the marijuana world. And though its genetics have been tainted with various cross-breed over the years, authentic heirloom strains have, if anything, only evolved stronger in terms of their THC content.

All things considered, there are many reasons why we’re all obsessed with Durban Poison marijuana. Some love its simplistic and clear-headed high, while others love it for its ancient roots and historical origins.

| Most of all, however, we love Durban Poison because of its pure, simple, sativa beauty.

This is an extremely medicinal marijuana strain that has proven an essential flower for patients struggling with a variety of ailments, symptoms and conditions. In fact, you’ll find that DP is a consistent best-seller in many MMJ dispensaries across the U.S.

In terms of THC content, lab tests have shown Durban Poison to routinely check in around the 17-26% range, which is pretty unreal considering that it has not been bred or genetically selected for in any way. Truth be told, there’s no way you won’t be able to feel Durban Poison’s effects from just a couple of hits.

Historically, Durban Poison has become absurdly popular in places like Holland, where certain strains are capable of finishing their growth cycle outdoors – even in a colder northern climate. This of course isn’t the norm for a sativa, which is probably why its become such a beloved strain here in the northern hemisphere.

Nowadays, Durban Poison is enjoyed all over the world by all walks of life: young, old, medical, recreational, dabbers, vapers, OG tokers, and everything in between. Find anyone out there who has anything bad to say about heirloom Durban Poison, and we’ll show you a true-to-form whackadoo.

Durban Poison Review: Flavor, Aroma, and Appearance

The aroma of Durban Poison weed is a unique one, with a harmonious and balanced blend of spicy and sweet — similar to your favorite cup of strong chai (it’ll have you buzzing too, just like caffeine does).

Expect tastes of anise, vanilla, spiced orange, fennel and lemon, all tied together with a rich creaminess that can’t be beat. You’ll experience these flavors on the tip of your tongue, settling in your mouth long after you’ve finished consuming this potent OG ganja.

| The scent of Durban Poison marijuana is also pungent and earthy, with a little sugar thrown in the mix for good measure.

Most would say that Durban is pleasant, but in a genuine and natural way. Durban Poison doesn’t reek of artificial smells, rather just pure mother nature working her magic to create something truly spectacular.

When taking a closer look at Durban Poison, expect to witness immense resin glands. The existence of this enlarged feature is in part what makes Durban Poison one of the top choices for concentrate extraction. The buds of Durban Poison weed are plump, circular and chunky, giving the term “fat bud” a whole new meaning.

Also, expect to find trichomes all over the plant – these little guys stick to everything because there’s just too many of them on the buds themself. Color-wise, the Durban Poison strain has the classic marijuana sativa appearance, with bright, sometimes icy green buds and orange pistils that rise up from within the crystal coated sugar leaves.

The water leaves of a healthy Durban Poison plant are quite striking, featuring prominent deep green coloration that adds a pop of brightness whenever it is seen; the appearance of Durban Poison in general is classic and simple, yet strikingly gorgeous.

Durban Poison Grow Info

Durban Poison Cannabis Strain

When grown outdoors, Durban Poison can become extremely tall, making it a strain that requires an excessive amount of space (unless of course you are planning on growing this cannabis indoors with special growth control techniques).

Due to its massive size, only those who can risk having the plant be seen by everyone around them should attempt to grow these girls outside. Special versions of Durban Poison exist with a short flowering phase, but of course these varieties are not authentic heirloom DP.

All in all, Durban Poison is probably best grown within an indoor set up, assuming that the proper light cycles, nutrients and care are given to the crops. It isn’t an extremely challenging strain of cannabis to grow, but as with any strain, if you want to produce top-shelf quality product, you’ll have to put the work in.

Also, results have shown that the most effective indoor method of growing Durban Poison is through the use of hydroponics, but again, you risk messing with the pure landrace genetics if you try and do anything too out-of-the-ordinary in terms of nutrient addition, etc.

| The flowering period of most dispensary-raised Durban Poison is about 9 weeks, but experts will know that true landrace DP takes about 14-16 weeks to finish flowering.

Grown outdoors, harvest is typically around mid-September to mid-October, so if cultivating outside, plan your timing accordingly. From well-cultivated Durban Poison weed, you can expect about a 16-ounce yield per plant when grown outdoors, or about a 13-ounce yield per meter squared when grown indoors.

Durban Poison is a proper choice for someone attempting to produce just one plant, as its cultivation is relatively simple and its yield is reasonable. Also, DP has a tendency to be rather resistant to mold, bugs and other pests, which makes this strain a real fighter (and therefore an even better candidate for cultivation if you are a true beginner.

And lastly, the high is very multi-dimensional and pleasant for most daytime activities, as well as night, making it an impressive medicine to always have on hand – no matter the condition or medical ailment you’re trying to treat.

Durban Poison Cannabis Effects

Due to its pure sativa genetic composition, the effects of Durban Poison are probably unlike any you have experienced – unless of course you are well-versed in trying out strains within the pure African sativa family.

The high is clean and energizing, and will not in any way leave your body feeling stoney or tired. This is what partially makes Durban Poison a great any-time-of-day marijuana, because it won’t distract your mind or cause you to lose focus, but rather keep you motivated and free from stress.

The high is especially cerebral, making it a suitable strain to consume whenever desired, even right before powerful workouts or heavy amounts of exercise. Also, you may have heard some say that the nugs act as a sort of ‘happy pill,’ lifting your spirits high and filling your mind with euphoric, creative thoughts that can last the whole day.

Medical Benefits of Durban Poison

Durban Poison Strain

The CBD content of Durban Poison is typically in the 1% or less range, so this plant isn’t considered ideal for aiding in the treatment of serious medical conditions (such as cancer, seizures, etc) – at least not for those who are opposed to getting stoned.

Rather, the high THC content of Durban Poison is brilliant at removing any of the physical or mental pain you might be experiencing from any range of medical conditions or mental disorders. Those who are experiencing stress, depression and anxiety can benefit wonderfully from Durban Poison’s medicinal ability to calm down an overly-active or heavily stimulated mind.

If your symptoms are primarily psychological, the best method of consuming Durban Poison in order to receive the greatest results is to smoke or consume a balanced dose of the strain – one in which you know is comfortably within your boundaries of marijuana intake.

Over-consuming pot of any variety when you are handling a serious mental condition can cause paranoia, or even heighten stress and anxiety levels, leaving you feeling worse-off and even more restless.

| In order to avoid excess THC consumption, consume Durban Poison responsibly by starting with a small dose and working your way up only as needed.

Additionally, Durban Poison has worked great in the past for nausea, loss of appetite and chronic pain. All of these symptoms are especially physical, so consuming something a little stronger like an edible, concentrate, wax, live resin, dab, etc. may have a substantially improved likelihood of providing therapeutic results.

Possible Side Effects of Durban Poison

The side effects of Durban Poison are very mild, at least in relation to the benefits that it can provide to patients and recreational cannabis consumers alike.

The most commonly reported side effects after consuming Duran Poison weed are dry mouth and dry eyes; mild situations that are easily solvable by keeping yourself hydrated before, during, and after your high (as well as applying moisturizing and redness-reducing eye drops if you deem them necessary).

All in all, the positives absolutely out way the negatives with the Durban Poison strain, and there really is nothing extraordinary that you need to be concerned with unless you are the type of tends to experience onset anxiety or paranoia with high-THC sativas.

Durban Poison Strain Review: Final Thoughts

We hope you have enjoyed reading this Durban Poison review, and that you not only found the article to be entertaining, but also educational and informative. Authentic Durban truly is one of the great landrace sativas of the world, but like we said earlier – it is not easy to find in a 100% pure heirloom variety.

Even in some of the more reputable west coast dispensaries, it is difficult (if not impossible) to find Durban Poison for sale that has not been tampered with, modified in hydroponics, or cross-bred with another “pure” sativa.

Regardless, it is refreshing to know that strains like DP do still exist, and we hope that this Durban Poison review will set you on a path to discovering an authentic, 100% pure variety of your own. Trust us – the experience will be like you nothing you’ve ever felt before.

Looking for an elusive pure strain?

Hello, I live 20 minutes from the coast of Lake Erie in NY, I have been trying to find an heirloom strain of this DP and, it’s impossible to find that one. but I will continue to look and if anyone knows where I can get or maybe even has a few extra seeds they can send this way. Let us converse and start to change the world, just you and me. Said Pinkie to the Brain.

    Fabulous energetic high

In September 2018, South Africa decriminalised cannabis cultivation for personal use. Living in Durban, I planted 6 seeds of Durban Poison outside. One was male, one became hermaphrodite but the other four are 3m monsters that took 7 months from seed to harvest but I now have more weed than I know what to do with. Fabulous citrus aroma, great smoke and a high that makes you want to hike in the mountains or surf for hours. Love it!

    Green is good!

The greener versions of the weed are better. If it goes yellow, do not buy it as that might be rotten. It is difficult to assess as it has some yellow part in its natural form but that is very little. Maximum must be green to brownish for a good stock!

a spontaneous review while smoking in real time

I am huffing a jaybird right now, the Durban is good…I have always thought there are like 4 strains close to mother root status, like 4 main derivative sources…the Ghanny/India kush, the Durban, maybe Acapulco Gold or deep Coulnian red….there are other closer root strains orbited out, Diesel, Northern Lights, et al, but now the faux science or the real skinny on the hybrids is sort of prevalent, almost as if it were spun by marketing … ..that is nice and smooth, tasty, almost to the point of coughing….I am texting a woman as I do this, sort of flirting, hahaha, she´ll think I am a pirate….so far no cotton mouth or too much lethargy, my worries are meaningless, but that don´t make them go away, but the Durban does a good temporary job of it…I feel chilled, mellow, escaped, feel like playing guitar, it is all good, a nice high

    Thank you for the info!
Explains a lot ot of things in my 20s compared to current stash.
Growing up in the 90s, 20 minutes from Durban I would often hear construction workers say that smoking gave them energy. Aside from its traditional use in medicine, we used to buy a single joint in the carpark, then go into a club.
Kids in our final school art exams class had a j then wrote their exams, and passed well! I was spoilt and never knew it! Godamit.

    Love It (but be careful)

Very well-rounded and long-lasting high. Strong though, and if you smoke too much you can get paranoid or anxious. High lasts many hours, yet another reason to pace yourself…pretty much best to smoke one small hit at a time, kind of pace yourself.

I love this stuff and would say it is in the top five of the best i’ve ever had.

Still though, Trainwreck is more like a classic sativa buzz if you ask me, or something like good Mexican, Panamaian, or Columbian… There is something really just different about DP that puts it in a class by itself.

Where do you live? If it is somewhere in the USA, I can most probably help you out. Most of the places here have local sellers, although they prefer to stay undercover or disguised. Just make a little effort, and you will be able to get the strain of your choice.
