CBD oil

With the recent full-scale FDA approval of Epidiolex, there is no longer any question as to whether or not CBD can work as a medicine. Multi-stage clinical trials have proven that it does, and it is in fact being prescribed by physicians for certain epileptic conditions as you read this.

| “With the recent FDA approval of Epidiolex, there is no longer any question as to whether or not CBD works as a medicine…”

However, CBD oil has come into the spotlight throughout 2018 for far more than an epilepsy treatment, and has been acknowledged for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to help with symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, pain, etc.

It has become so popular, in fact, that advocates have begun pushing for its removal from the DEA’s list of controlled substances; doing so would allow doctors to research it without restriction, and thus begin to understand its full range of therapeutic benefits. Even with a lack of clinical research, however, CBD is already being used as an alternative treatment option for several conditions, including things like irritable bowel syndrome, nerve degeneration, and psoriasis.

In this article, we present 12 conditions wherein CBD has been shown to have vast therapeutic potential. While its FDA-approved use currently only covers two rare forms of epilepsy, the likely truth is that the compound can treat far more than just seizures.

Understanding the Lingo: What is CBD?

For those who don’t yet know what CBD (cannabidiol) is, it is one of dozens of natural cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike THC, which is known to produce a psychoactive effect, CBD does not cause a high. Therefore, it has been used by people of all ages to help treat a variety of diseases.

| “Unlike THC, which produces the psychoactive effects of cannabis, CBD does NOT cause a high.”

According to a recent study in Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience, CBD was suggested to have several important healing properties:

Antiemetic Reduces nausea and vomiting
Anticonvulsant Suppresses seizure activity
Antipsychotic Combats psychosis disorders
Anti-inflammatory Combats inflammatory disorders
Anti-oxidant Combats neurodegenerative disorders
Anti-tumoral/Anti-cancer Combats tumor and cancer cells
Anxiolytic/Anti-depressant  Combats anxiety and depression disorders

The Legal Status of CBD Oil in the U.S.

CBD oil that you can buy in stores is typically manufactured from hemp, but if you live in a medical or recreational state where marijuana is legal, you will find CBD oil made from higher-THC cannabis (marijuana) plants.

What’s the difference?

  • Hemp plants are grown in different conditions to marijuana. They are often stalky, tall, and very fibrous
  • Marijuana plants are stubbier and much shorter, normally produced under conditions that allow for high THC content.

The obvious difference between cannabis CBD and hemp CBD is that hemp has very little THC; from a legal aspect, all forms of cannabis are currently classed as Schedule 1 drugs and therefore, on a federal level are illegal.

Individual states have introduced laws that legalize the plant in the form of medical (and in some cases recreational) use. If you reside in one of these states, you will have access to both “hemp CBD oil” and “cannabis CBD oil.”

What if you live in a “non-legalized” state?

Obviously, CBD oil with higher amounts of THC from marijuana is out of the question if you live in a non-legal state, but CBD oil from hemp is a completely different story. According to, “Federal law prohibits U.S. farmers from cultivating hemp as a commercial crop, but the sale of imported, low-THC, industrial hemp products is permitted in the United States.”

| “According to Project CBD, the sale of imported, low-THC industrial hemp products is permitted in the United States.”

Sounds amazing, right? Well, it depends on who you ask. If you read the Farm Bill of 2014, you won’t find a clear answer on the topic. Nevertheless, what we do understand is that companies like Pure Kana and GreenRoads are paving the way to alternative medical health, helping people all over the country by shipping hemp-derived CBD oil to people in all 50 states.

Whether it’s legal, or borderline, the simple fact is that CBD seems to be working for millions of people across the U.S., for dozens of different uses. Here are the top conditions that people are using CBD hemp oil for.

Ailments That CBD Oil may be Able to Help With

1) symptoms relating to Cancer and cancer treatments

To be clear, CBD certainly should NOT be considered a cure for cancer, no matter what you may have heard or read about online. However, several studies have shown CBD to have properties that may be able to help reduce or slow cancer cell proliferation, as well as help with related symptoms such as pain and nausea.

From the U.S. National Library of Medicine:

| “Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid from the Cannabis species [that displays] chemopreventive activities … and may increase the uptake of various cytotoxic agents in cancer cells.”

2) Epilepsy and other neurological disorders

On June 25, 2018, GW Pharmaceuticals’ Epidiolex label became the first ever natural CBD-based medication to gain approval from the FDA. It is currently being prescribed for two rare forms of epilepsy (Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), but many other non-diagnosed epilepsy/seizure patients have been self-medicating with CBD oil.

From the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:

| “[Epidiolex] is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana … It is also the first FDA approval of a drug for the treatment of Dravet syndrome.”

3) Anxiety and depression

Given the fact that psychiatric disorders can’t really be attributed to any one specific neurological deficiency, it is tough for researchers to explicitly state the effects of cannabis on things like anxiety and depression. However, research has been done on the potential of CBD to be used as an alternative treatment option, and positive results have been observed in patients.

From the academic journal CNS and Neurological Disorders Drug Targets:

| “CBD is a constituent of Cannabis sativa with great psychiatric potential, including uses as an antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like compound.”

4) Insomnia and sleep disorders

Insomnia is another condition wherein it is very difficult for doctors to pinpoint an exact physiological cause. However, it is believed that CBD’s interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system may play an important role in maintaining a healthy sleep-wake cycle, thereby promoting the natural onset of REM sleep.

From a 2013 publication in the Journal of Psychopharmacology:

| “The acute administration of CBD appears to increase total sleep time, in addition to increasing sleep [during] the day of administration.”

5) Pain and inflammation

Along with anxiety and insomnia, one of CBD’s most popular uses is no doubt as an analgesic (pain-relieving) treatment. And in fact, much research has been given to the cannabis’ compounds specific role in the in this regard.

From the U.S. National Institue of Health (NIH):

| “CBD is a cannabinoid with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic and chemopreventive activities.”

6) Diabetes and diabetic nerve pain

It is common knowledge that one of the main side effects of diabetes is lower extremity nerve pain brought on by obesity and poor blood sugar regulation. Over the years, many studies have shown CBD to be able to effectively reduce nerve pain and neuropathy in diabetic patients.

From a 2006 publication in Autoimmunity:

| “CBD lowers incidence of diabetes [and suppresses inflammation] in non-obese diabetic mice.”

7) Cardiovascular disease

It may sound odd to talk about the effects of cannabis – and specifically CBD – on cardiovascular disease and heart disease, but there have in fact been several important research publications highlighting positive effects on things like blood pressure and general heart health.

From a 2017 report in the Journal of Thoracic Disorders:

| “…beneficial effects have been demonstrated in studies showing that cannabis or marijuana use attenuates [reduces] common cardiovascular disease risk factors.”

8) Arthritis

Behind pain and anxiety, arthritis relief may be the third most popular reason why individuals use CBD. Effective joint pain relief has been experienced in both oral CBD oils as well as topical CBD creams and massage lotions that you can administer directly to the site of joint inflammation.

From the July 2016 edition of the European Journal of Pain:

| “The transdermal [use of] CBD reduces inflammation and pain-related behaviors in rat models of arthritis.”

9) muscle Spasms

Muscle spasticity and spasms can result from dozens of different disorders, including conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, spinal cord injury, hormone issues, and nervous system disorders like ALS and MS. Regardless of the fact that chronic muscle spasms are one of the rarer conditions on this list, a surprising amount of scientific research has been done on the effects of CBD for muscle spasms.

From the University of Washington’s report on the 2014 Spinal Cord Injury Wellness Summit:

| ” [The use of medical cannabis] relieves muscle spasms … and can also enhance the effects of other anti-spasticity medications like baclofen.”

10) Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a neurodegenerative autoimmune disorder wherein the body’s immune system attacks its own nerve cells and deteriorates them – often to the point of paralyzation. Surprisingly, the use of cannabis extracts have been known for decades to offer incredible relief for MS victims.

From a 2008 publication in Neuropsychiatric Disorder Treatments:

| “Several studies suggest that cannabinoids and endocannabinoids may have a key role in the pathogenesis and therapy of multiple sclerosis (MS).”

11) PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is described as the result of “poor adaptation to a traumatic experience,” and can be brought on as a result of dozens of different underlying causes. It commonly includes such symptoms as severe anxiety, depression, and sudden mood swings, and as such, has been known to respond incredibly well to the healing, therapeutic benefits of CBD.

From a 2018 academic publication titled “Cannabidiol as a Therapeutic Alternative for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder”:

| “The effects of CBD on the different stages of aversive memory processing make this compound a candidate for [supplementary] PTSD therapy.”

12) Stress relief

The term “stress relief” can indeed maintain a wide variety of clinical and non-clinical implications, but the fact remains that one of the primary non-medical uses of CBD oil has been for general day-to-day stress reduction. Cannabidiol possesses many calming, sedative effects, and as such, it is quickly becoming preferable to dangerous prescription medications among thousands of patients.

From a 2011 report in the academic publication Stress:

| “Chronic stress can lead to depression-like symptoms … investigation into the role of the endocannabinoid system may give insight into possible therapeutic manipulations [for the treatment of] stress-related conditions.”

    Expect big changes to come..

With CBD removed from Schedule I (as far as I understand), expect A LOT more research to be conducted in 2019. Research leads to federal approval, federal approval leads to marketing opportunities for the big boys (Big Pharma), Big Pharma leads to big money… and the fed never turns down an opportunity for big money
