cbd dosage

With so many CBD Oil brands on the market, it is often extremely hard to know which ones are best and more importantly, how much CBD should you take. What is the correct dosage?

In this guide, we’ve got the dosage topic covered but you should always consult with your doctor before beginning any form of treatment. CBD-rich oil comes in a variety of concentrations and forms, and while most bottles come with a user manual, CBD oil works differently for each person. If you’ve never tried CBD or you are still trying to figure out what works best for you, then continue reading as there are a few important things to understand about CBD oil and CBD oil dosages.

Important Things to Know About CBD Oil Dosages

1) Every Person is Different and May Require a Different Dosage

If you’ve been following the articles on our site, then you have probably heard of the endocannabinoid system. This is a unique system in our body that’s responsible for improving and maintaining our mental and physical health. CBD is believed to help regulate that system by binding with various receptors located within cell and tissue systems. Those receptors are referred to as CB1 and CB2.

The endocannabinoid system is extremely complex and far from understood, leaving researchers trying to determine whether or not the CBD directly or indirectly effects those receptors, and exactly what role they play in affecting ones’ health.

While the exact way they effect our system still remains a mystery to most researchers, what we do know is that every person has a different endocannabinoid system, and therefore while the instructions on a CBD oils’ bottle may be informative and clear, the standard dosing may affect two different people in completely different ways.

2) Genetics, Tolerance and General Health

If you accept the fact that everyone is different, then you can understand that everyone has his/her own genetics, tolerance, and general health. There are those that suffer from severe debilitating conditions and others that are only looking to cure their day to day anxiety. Each person has their own reasons for wanting to take CBD oil, and it’s assumed that all of these factors – genetics, tolerance and general health – will come into play as far as how well CBD works for them. It cannot be expected that someone who is in the prime of their game, from a health perspective, will require the same dosage as someone who has severe medical issues.

3) It’s Not a Miracle Cure

Regardless of whether the right dosage of CBD will work for your body or not, it’s important to understand that CBD oil is not a miracle cure. Don’t expect to take a few drops and, Voilà, you’re cured. The effects of CBD oil are not instant, and people constantly make the same mistake – they use CBD for a short period, expecting it to cure them instantly, and when it doesn’t work they complain and ask for a refund. CBD can take time to work and similar to your health issues, it won’t happen overnight. The key is finding the right dosage.

The Standard CBD Oil Dosage Manual

Now, remember, this guide is a general one, and it is extremely important to read the dosage instructions on the CBD oil you are taking, especially as results from certain dosages may affect you differently then others. Furthermore, it is always best to contact the CBD oil company to ask them the right dosage for your medical condition and consult with your doctor if required. With that said, there are a few common dosage strategies that might work for you:

  1. Start by taking one drop on the first day. It’s important to see how you feel as everyone reacts differently. It may even cause you irritation, and therefore it’s important to stop.
  2. If all goes well, increase the amount to 2 drops per day for the first 3-4 weeks. This is the testing period to see if it is helping any of your symptoms.
  3. Spread the drops throughout the day. For example, take one in the morning and one in the evening.
  4. If you don’t experience any change, then increase at a slow rate and see how you feel. With each person, it is a question of finding the right dosage.

Remember that many CBD oil companies advise you to put the drops under your tongue and let them take effect for at least 30 seconds.

Numerous sites state the following dosage guidelines when using CBD orally:

  • General Health: 2.5-15mg CBD
  • Chronic pain: 2.5-20 mg CBD
  • Sleep disorders: 40-160 mg CBD

CBD Oil Dosage Recap

If you are just starting out with CBD oil, then remember to start small and to consult with your doctor. According to ProjectCBD, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to making CBD research transparent, there is no established lethal CBD dose. Therefore be cautious and as with any new health products, it’s important to know how your body reacts to CBD. Increase the dosage gradually and if you feel that the CBD oil isn’t affecting you in a positive way, then you should stop and consult with a medical professional. Reasonable dose???

I have been taking charlottes web Hamp plus oil for four days. I have insomnia and I am now taking half a dropper, which seems to work well. Does this sound like a reasonable dose?

    Works for me!

I suffer from neuropathy for 16 years now. The last 4 months has been every single day and it is so painful. I started taking Elixinol 300 and I am almost pain free just Shy of two weeks! I still take my lyrica and amitiptyline but now I’m pian free! I take a full dropper in the a.m. as soon as I get up and then I take another full one at about 2pm and then I take another at 9 pm. Sometimes I take a half dropper between the times. The bottle says that it is 5mg Cannabidiol for every half dropper. So 10mg each full dropper. My life has changed drastically now!!!

  3. Mariella

I just purchased Hemp Honey, 500 mg. I’ve been taking 1/4 tsp once a day. I’m 150 lbs female and use it for anxiety. Is this the correct dose?

    1. Adam

Never heard of that company. You really need to ask them.

  4. Barbara Guariglio

My 15-year-old granddaughter suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, often at the same time, and depression. I ordered a bottle of Sol CBD 300 mg. What dosage would you recommend?

    1. Adam

We are not familiar with this brand. Have you contacted them?

  5. Phyllis

I have chronic insomnia. I have vaped a combo of cbd/thc. It was quite effective; however, I’d rather use an oil sublingually. I bought some Hempworx 750 but the person selling it wasn’t knowledgeable about dosage and use. She recommended using drops morning and evening. That doesn’t make sense to me if my use of it is for insomnia. Also, she said to use it to figure out how many drops to take.

Can you give me how many drops I should be using and when. Also, what is your recommendation as the best cbd oil with a small amount of thc?

  6. Zak

What is recommended if i just want to take CBD for soreness from exercise and strength training? Would you even recommend an oral regimen or would a topical or inhalation be more effective? Long time THC user wanting to test out the CBD waters. I am open to any brands, haven’t purchased anything yet.

    1. Adam

It is really a matter of preference. The oils are the most sought after products.

  7. Tina McClain

Been taking CBD for months now and the results are noticeable. Really loving the effect

  8. Charlotte

I just ordered my 1st bottle of CBD …. I suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, and depression…… do I take at different times a day different amounts?

    1. Adam

It depends on the brand you purchased from. Which one is it? As each brand has it’s own dosage.

  9. Shannon

Thank you for this great article! Do you have any suggestions on how to treat both insomnia and pain at the same time given that the dosages are so different?

I have Fibromyalgia, so two of the things I struggle with the most are insomnia and pain. I am struggling to figure out how to treat both with CBD since the dosage is so different for each one. I started out just taking low doses (worked my way up slowly to about 30 mg twice a day for pain). I didn’t get any relief for pain, and it made my insomnia worse, so then I tried a single dose of 150 mg before bed, and that seems to help with insomnia, but now I don’t know what to do about the pain.

I would be so grateful for any tips you can provide!

    1. Karen Fronterhouse

You might try taking a couple of organic tumeric capsules along with your CBD oil. It works miracles for pain. It is a spice and has zero side effects. I’ve used it for a couple of years now.

  10. Kimberly

Took my first dose of Plus CBD oil gold formula 5mg bottle, 1/2 dropper at 9p.m.. Completely stopped my chronic pain but woke up at 1:45 a.m. in chronic pain, can I take another 1/2 dropper or do I have to wait til 9 a.m. . Dosage instructions say 1/2 dropper twice daily.

  11. lynn

i have bad nerve pain for many years. i started taking the 30mg capsules twice a day. i know not to expect instant relief. how long should i wait to see if its helping? i cant afford to up my dose its already over my budget.

    1. Adam

      Which brand are you using?

  12. Amanda

How to sensibly buy LEGAL cbd oil? Because I got a letter saying customs has confiscated my package two times already and I’m pissed.

  13. Clarissa Smith

I’m struggling so hard. I started CBD oil about a week ago and my depression, anxiety and insomnia is no better. My oil is 500 mg and I was advised to take 1 dropperfull two times daily. The amount I’m getting of CBD is 16mg. I’m thinking of trying a different brand. I read some brands are better for they condition. Any advice would be great.

    1. Adam

      Which brand are you using?

  14. Jessica Ravins

    Excellent read!

A store had me try a water soluble oil. Have you ever heard of it in the water soluble dose? It didn’t do anything for my RA. I have ordered the regular CBD oil from another company and am going to try it. I ordered the 300 but I’m wondering if I should have ordered a stronger one.

    1. Adam

Generally speaking those who suffer from RA will require a higher dosage, but it is hard to tell. It depends on your condition and the type of CBD you are taking.

  16. Jordan Smith

Hi I’m using this oil for the first time. It’s 1500mg in strength. What should I start on? Is this too high. I’ve been told to take 2-3 drops 4-5 times a day but after reading about it this sound like too much. I’ve had 6 drops today so far and starting to feel a bit drowsy but don’t know if it’s the oil.

    1. Adam

It really depends on the condition you are trying to treat. For example, for anxiety 300mg – 600mg can work, for pain, the higher doses tend to be more effective. Also it is best to start with small doses and also contact the company you are purchasing from from more advise

  17. Trena Wells

Correct dosage is so important. Using the wrong amount of CBD won’t have the desired effects. This is a great article with very important info.

  18. Kirsty

I’m in the UK and any cbd oil sellers can’t give any advice on dosage or strength or they will no longer be able to sell it. I have spinal stenosis and I’m on tramadol, co-codamol, morphine sulphate, valium and dosulepin, all for pain. What strength of cbd oil should I be using? I understand how to dose it I’m just not sure if I should start with 1000mg or more or less. Any advice would be really appreciated!

    1. Adam

It is a bit hard to advise as it really depends on your condition and genetics. You are also taking alot of medication. You would have to start supervised and at a small dosage to see how the CBD interacts. It is important to consult with your doc before you start. Start small and gradually increase the dosage. For pain anything above 600mg is best. The lower ones mg such as 300mg are more for stress and anxiety. That is a general guideline. One last thing it also depends on the brand you are purchasing from. You should also consult with them

    2. Tom Agnew

1000mg oral is the most highly reviewed product we have, I use it myself and can say it’s benefited me.

    3. Lucia Jun

I would start with 1000 MG dose, I love the one by Old Man’s Beard Apothecary. It’s organic and awesome. You can get it on Amazon. There’s no point in spending money on anything that has a lower concentration. If you want to take something that’s 250 MG or 500 MG, you just take less.

  19. She Scheid

I have idiopathic neuropathy, hands and feet so far. Purchased CBS oil – bottle says 350 MG, 23 mg/ml, 15 ml. Dosage 1-3 drops under tongue. What dosage will work best for the most relief? Thanks!

  20. Katht

My dog couldn’t walk on his bad legs, now he trucks with Cars 3 year old puppy plays with him and his demeanor is great , do research make sure you’re not getting snake oil. The reputable companies will give you the dosage and what is in it. CBD oil is the same for humans and for pets so yes it will work but you got to take the right amount put it under your tongue leave it there for about 30 secondsCBD oil is the same for humans and for pets so yes it will work but you got to take the right amount put it under your tongue leave it there for about 30 seconds and boy you will notice a difference

I’m trying Purekana CBD oil for the first time today.(1oz Bot.-300mg)This evening I took 1/2 dropper under the Tongue. 1/2 dropper is around 15 drops. I hope this is right??? Does anyone know the right amount to take??? I’m trying to relieve muscle spasms which causes chronic pain. I’m already taking Valium to relieve some of the pain. I have also had PT many times, which helps for a while. If anyone out there can help explain to me about how to take the oil I would appreciate it. New to the game!!!!

    1. Adam

It is really hard to give an exact dosage. Everyone metabolizes it differently and it effects everyone differently. It’s best to experiment with a few different doses to start and slowly move around the dose to find the best result. For muscle spasms 1/2 the dropper is a great start. Don’t be afraid to take more if needed. CBD is safe even at high doses.

  22. dana e morgan

  27. Norma

My CBD oil comes in a syringe, but it does not come out in a drop. It comes out semi-solid. I don’t know how to measure how much to take………

    1. Hultquist

You must be referring to Cannabis Oil…the potent stuff. One or two drops to start. Wait 2 hours minimum. A few more drops, then wait. You should feel something. Most important is to start slowly until you can build up a to tolerance.

  28. Naomi Croteau

Purchased CBD a few days back and it kinda works. Glad about the results. Thank you for the information.
