We seem to live in an era where we stumble from one health crisis to the next. Along with the antibiotic-resistant bacteria and opioid epidemics, we also have the chronic inflammation and chronic inflammatory disease crisis. There has been a significant change in our diets, lifestyle, and food supply, and the result is a decline in general health.
Inflammation is our body’s natural response to harmful cells and pathogens – it acts as a protective measure against the initial damage suffered by the immune system. The inflammatory condition is divided into Acute & Chronic categories. Acute inflammation is caused by injured tissues or bacterial pathogens, whereas chronic inflammation is caused by consistent acute inflammations or foreign agents.
| “We need a new way to fight the problem as pharmaceuticals are not getting the job done. Could CBD be our secret weapon against inflammation?”

Traditional Inflammation Treatments & Their Side Effects

Inflammation has been attributed to a variety of medical conditions, with heart disease and cancer among the most serious. However, chronic inflammation can also be associated with:

  • Bone disease (such as osteoporosis)
  • Metabolic disorder complications (such as type 2 diabetes)
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases (such as COPD and Irritable Bowel Disease)
  • Neurological disorders (such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s)

Also, statistics surrounding our health in the United States make for grim reading:

DID YOU KNOW: 8% of the U.S. population has diabetes?

DID YOU KNOW: 43 million Americans are afflicted with arthritis and joint disease?

DID YOU KNOW: Over 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease?

DID YOU KNOW: The rate of obesity in American adults is 66%? (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine believes that at the current rate of increase, every American adult will be obese by 2048!)

The list goes on and on, and the range of pharmaceutical treatments for inflammation is not getting any better! Moreover, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common pharmaceutical treatment for inflammation. These include:
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Celecoxib
  • Oxaprozin
  • Piroxicam
One of the main issues with NSAIDs such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen, in particular, is that people pop them like candy without realizing the formidable range of side effects, which include:
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
More serious side effects include possible liver and kidney failure, ulcers and prolonged bleeding after sustaining an injury or after surgery. More worryingly, however, is the fact that NSAIDs increase the risk of potentially fatal strokes and heart attacks. Given the problems associated with these pharmaceutical drugs, it is hardly surprising to learn that patients are desperately seeking alternatives such as CBD for their inflammation worries.

How Can CBD Help With Inflammation?

The simple answer is to change our diets and increase our Omega 3 index levels. However, the solution isn’t as basic as that for an increasing percentage of Americans. CBD is long associated with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive qualities, and the clamor for this cannabinoid has increased significantly since the FDA has allowed it to be marketed as a food supplement.
The two main cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system are CB1 and CB2. While THC is more effective when dealing with CB1 (controls perception, mood, sleep, memory, and appetite), CBD has a greater impact on the CB2 receptor (affects the immune system).
Since inflammation is an ‘immune response,’ it is important for any compound to focus on the CB2 receptor to reduce inflammation. While CBD is not the only known cannabis compound to activate the CB2 receptor, it is the most abundant.

Research on CBD for Inflammation Response

Arguably the most exciting studies relating to CBD and inflammation have shown that it is the strongest of all anti-inflammatory options, beating off stiff competition from Omega-3, vitamin C, and various antioxidants.
Several compounds within marijuana help reduce inflammation, but CBD is arguably the most effective. One significant study was performed on mice at the Imperial College London and showed that CBD possessed powerful anti-inflammatory capabilities.
For example, researchers found that when the mice received 5mg/kg of CBD, their inflammation was reduced by up to 50%.
Oddly enough, the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD were negligible when the mice received 25mg/kg.
Also, a 2011 study for the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine looked at the impact of CBD on the inflammation caused by oxidative stress, and concluded that cannabidiol was effective and reduced the risk of organ damage and dysfunction.
Finally, a 2015 study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence looked at the levels of inflammation in people who smoked marijuana, and compared them to those who didn’t. Researchers observed 1,115 people who recently smoked marijuana, and 8,041 non-smokers with the goal being to examine the influence of the plant on C-reactive protein (CRP) – an inflammation marker that is often linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Results of the study found that people who had smoked marijuana within the previous 30 days had lower CRP levels than non-smokers.

Final Thoughts on CBD for Inflammation

Simply put, inflammation is extremely painful and inconvenient at best. At worst, it is a sign that you’re suffering from a serious medical problem. While NSAIDs can provide you with reasonably fast-acting relief, the positive effects are only temporary, and are often accompanied by long-term side effects.
In contrast, CBD is all-natural and comes in a variety of forms, including oils, gummies, edibles, tinctures, topical ointments, and more.
The best CBD sellers ensure that their products contain little or no THC, no additives, and no GMOs. If inflammation is making your life hell, take some time to do some quality research, as there are many reputable brands out there that offer legal, high-grade hemp CBD products to soothe your pain.

    CBD for inflammation is workable

I was recently travelling to Hong Kong and found that prostate cancer is a major cause of concern over there for elderly men. And most of them use CBD, for pain management due to inflammation. They also use pills, but CBD is very popular in that place.

Marijuana (MJ) is not legal in Louisiana, recreationally. It’s been medically legal for a minute but impossible to obtain.
Is this med legal in states that have yet to really legalize MJ?

    CBD beats ibuprofen!

I experienced 4 herniated lumbar discs about 5 years ago, and have largely recovered, but the injury has made my lower back sore after activity. I was in the habit of eating 600-800 mgs Advil for relief until I discovered CBD. Now I find 50 mg cbd has the same relief as 600 mg Advil. I am soooooo happy I made this discovery.

  5. Michael Austin
    Left Aspirin

I used to take aspirin earlier, have read a lot of its controversies and side effects, so wanted to discontinue but did not have an alternative. But thanks to CBD now, I use it for inflammation and have left aspirin.
