Not long ago, we came across a YouTube video from HowToHydroponics that documented how to make a marijuana grow tent for $2. If you’ve ever shopped around for an actual grow tent for weed, you’ll know that these things can easily cost $200 or more. So needless to say, the title caught our eye.
In all honesty, the idea behind this project is as brilliant as it is simple; it includes nothing more than some cheap reflective emergency blanket material and a hula hoop from the dollar store, and will increase a good LED grow light’s efficiency (which we assume you already have) by over 100%.
If you’ve been looking for a nice little 420 weekend project, or have been wondering how to make a marijuana grow tent for next to nothing, then this step-by-step guide is for you.
How to Make the Cheapest Marijuana Grow Tent
If you’re trying to make this cheap grow tent for weed, all you’re going to need is some reflective blanket material (like the kind you get in the camping section at Wal-Mart), and a cheap hula-hoop.
Basically, the idea behind the DIY grow tent for weed is pretty simple: hang some thin reflective sheet material around a hula-hoop, put your grow light inside, and put your weed plant under the light. As you’ll see in the video below, a PAR meter reading will show that the reflective Mylar increases the photosynthetic energy of your grow operation drastically, thus ensuring the potential for bigger, more robust nuggets.
Sounds pretty simple, right?
Of course, there are some obvious “flaws” that people have pointed out in the video, with folks asking such questions as:
- How can you conveniently access the plant?
- How do you set up airflow and ventilation?
- Won’t the plastic hula-hoop melt?
These are all fair enough questions, but hey – for a cheap $2 marijuana grow tent that will increase your light efficiency by over 100%, beggars can’t be choosers.
Here’s the video of the whole process in action, so you can see the results yourself (credit to HowToHydroponics YouTube channel and Cody at Nukeheads.com for the idea):
Does the Cheapest Marijuana Grow Tent Really Only Cost $2?
To be fair, if you go out to someplace like Wal-Mart to get your “materials,” you’re probably going to end up spending a little more than $2. The guy in the video is from Canada and claims he bought both the reflective blanket and the hula-hoop at a dollar store for about $2.50 CAD, which works out to about $1.90 USD.
At Wal-Mart, you can get both an 82.5″ x 52″ emergency reflective blanket and a hula-hoop for less than $4 each; not quite as cheap as $2, but again, we’re trying not to be too picky here.
All in all, you can increase the bud yield on a single marijuana plant for less than $10, which sounds like a pretty darn good deal to us.
How to Build the Cheap “$2” Grow Tent for Weed
As far as building your DIY marijuana grow tent, that will mostly be up to your own devices and “creative engineering” skills. As you see above, the guy in the video had his contraption rigged up on a ULine-style Slatwall panel, but there are surely other options for all you handy DIY’ers out there.
A lot of good LED grow lights are designed to be hung from thin cables, so you’ll have to figure out a way to fasten the hula-hoop around the light, then attach the reflective blanket to the hoop. The guy in the video attached his sheet using duct tape, so something tells us you won’t have to have Frank Lloyd Wright-like engineering skills in order to figure something out.
Also, some people had commented that the heat from the light would surely melt the hula-hoop and/or the reflective blanket, but if you’re using LED, you’ll be fine as they hardly emit any heat at all.
Have some fun with it, be creative, and most importantly – be thankful that someone found out how to make a cheap marijuana grow tent for (way) less than $10.
