Okay, so we’re going to go ahead and apologize in advance if that title was a little bit, erm… ‘misleading.’ The fact is, there is no exact “right” amount of CBD to take in terms of how many milligrams you should be dosing on a daily basis.
Considering the endless amount of variables that are at play, it would be downright naive to dish out some random number (say 25mg oral CBD taken twice daily), and say that that amount will be effective for everyone.
For instance, here’s just a small list of some of the things that might affect how many mg of CBD it will take for you personally to start noticing therapeutic effects:
- How old are you?
- How much do you weigh?
- What is your normal diet
- What symptoms are you trying to treat?
- How are you consuming the CBD (vaping, smoking, oil, edible..)?
- Is it a full-spectrum CBD or a CBD isolate?
- Is this your first time taking CBD?
- Are you a previous cannabis user?
- Do you already have a cannabinoid tolerance built up?
This is just an ‘off-the-top-of-my-head’ type list to boot; there are many, many other things that a serious doctor (which we certainly are NOT) would probably take into consideration before issuing a dosage recommendation.
That being said, however, don’t let any of that discourage you or overwhelm you; at the end of the day, the vast majority of CBD users will be taking a daily dose between 10 and 75mg, with highly effective results.
And of course, given the fact that CBD has been declared by the World Health Organization as “well tolerated with a good safety profile,” and having “no evidence of public health related problems,” there is virtually zero risk of adverse side effects if you take a dose that’s too large.
In this article, we will do our very best to set you off on the right path to finding an effect CBD dose that works for you and your condition. So don’t let the question of ‘how many mg of CBD do I take’ be an overwhelming or overly complicated one — because it’s really not all that difficult.
First Things First: What Type of CBD Oil Should You Use?
Generally speaking, there are two main types of CBD oils out there: full-spectrum and CBD isolates.
Full-spectrum CBD oils are tinctures that incorporate the entirety of the raw plant material that the CBD is sourced from. In other words, in addition to containing the active CBD compound, a good full-spectrum oil will have other phytocannabinoids (such as CBG, CBC, CBN, etc), phytonutrients, terpenes, flavonoids, and omega acids included from the raw material – a veritable smorgasbord of “cannabis goodness.”
CBD isolate, on the other hand, is exactly what it sounds like it is; the active CBD compound all by itself, with no additional compounds.
Which one is “better,” you might be wondering? Well, several studies have surfaced in recent years showing that full-spectrum tinctures are generally more effective due to the “entourage effect” of cannabinoids – in other words, that CBD seems to be more potent and therapeutically effective when working alongside other natural compounds from the plant.
That being said, CBD isolates definitely have their place in the world of medicinal cannabis, and many people swear by them. If you’re just starting out using CBD oil, it’s typically recommended that you start with a good full-spectrum product rather than an isolate.
How Many Milligrams of CBD to Take?
Once you’ve decided on a good, high-quality full-spectrum CBD oil, it’s then time to decide how many mg to take. This is where things can get a little bit frustrating, as cannabis extracts can indeed be a little finicky in terms of finding the perfect dose. If you have access to a physician or other form of health professional with knowledge of medical cannabis, by all means do not be afraid to ask them – their knowledge is more valuable than you might imagine.
In any regard, the bottle of CBD oil you get will likely come with a dropper top, as well as general guidelines for dosing. For reference, a standard 300mg bottle of Pure Kana’s Premium CBD Oil contains roughly 7.5mg of CBD in a single “dose” (a dose being half a dropper full, or 15 drops of oil).

What if You Don’t Feel Anything?
Truth be told, you’ll be unlikely to notice much (if any) effects from that initial 1 or 2mg dose. However, you’ll want to stick with it for several days (3-5 days), before upping your milligram intake. If you start upping your dose right away, you’ll have no idea if the compounds are working with your body’s endocannabinoid system or not, and you may run the risk of “overloading” your receptors before they even have a chance to start working. It takes patience finding the right dose, but trust us — it’ll be well worth it in the end.
If after several days you find that you still have not noticed any effects from the CBD, then try upping your dose – but only in small increments.
For example try a 5mg dose taken two or three times per day (morning, afternoon, evening) if you don’t get anything from the 1-2mg dose. Also, like we mentioned earlier it’s important to spread out your CBD intake over the course of the day in a few small doses, rather than dumping one big dose down your throat in the morning and waiting for some “miracle effect” to kick in.
If you don’t notice anything from the 5mg dose, then up it to 7.5mg, then 10mg, then 12.5 mg, etc — until you start noticing positive effects.
Also, it’s key to spread those doses out over the course of the day; even if you get up to 15 or 20mg without noticing any effects, keep administering three doses a day (i.e. 20mg in the morning, 20mg in the afternoon, 20mg in the evening). This not only gives your body time to adjust to the amount of cannabinoid receptors it needs to ‘activate,’ but it also allows you to keep a more keen eye on whether any effects are taking place or not.
It’s worth mentioning, however, that you may not need to take two (or three) doses per day – many people find that just a single morning dose will offer plenty of therapy to get them through the day. (Or if you’re taking CBD for sleep issues, that a single evening dose is all that’s needed to get you through the night).
Figuring out how many mg of CBD to take is a process that requires time, effort, and a keep ability to listen to your body — don’t get frustrated, don’t overdo it, and most importantly of all, be patient.
Other Things to Consider About CBD Dosing
One thing about CBD that’s incredibly important to understand is that it affects everyone differently. This has to do with the fact that each and every one of us has a unique endocannabinoid system, and a unique makeup of CB-1 and CB-2 receptors throughout our bodies. While one person may experience extraordinary effects for their chronic pain with a 50mg, twice-a-day dose, another person with the same exact symptoms may experience nothing.
And of course, there unfortunately are the people who won’t experience any effects at all – no matter how much CBD oil they take. This could be down to the fact that they have no active cannabinoid receptors in the afflicted system or body part that they’re trying to treat, or that there is some sort of dysfunction with the receptors that are there, that’s not allowing them to interact with the CBD compound. (This is why you can be reading customer reviews from a high-quality brand, and come across some person that says, “this product is terrible — doesn’t do anything AT ALL!”
At the end of the day, there is still MUCH to be learned in terms of proper dosing for CBD. This article is just a very simple, very basic “jumping off point” that will hopefully help get you going in the right direction. For instance while we said earlier that “most” people find decent therapy with doses between 10 and 75mg (taken once, twice, or three times daily), there are plenty of people out there who self-treat with doses well over 100mg, taken multiple times a day. And in fact, many epilepsy patients will consume well over 1 gram (1,000mg) of CBD per day, every single day of their lives, with no adverse side effects.

One thing that most new CBD users don’t realize is that cannabinoids are compounds with biphasic effects. This means that rather than producing effects in a predictable, linear path (i.e. the more CBD you take the stronger the results), low and high doses of the compound actually have opposite effects.
