The wide range of medical and therapeutic properties of CBD oil are no secret, having been well documented over the last few years. In addition to helping treat conditions like chronic pain and inflammation for example, CBD has also been shown to help ease the symptoms of diabetes, anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and insomnia – among many other things.
However, for individuals that suffer from the most intense or severe of symptoms, or for those who have tried traditional CBD oil with minimal results, a different, more potent administration of the natural cannabinoid may be in order.
In this article, we talk about dabbing CBD as a therapeutic means to relieving even the most harsh of medical symptoms.
First Things First: What is Dabbing… and What is CBD?
In case you are unfamiliar with the term, “dabbing” is a fairly new method of marijuana consumption that involves the vaporization (or actually sublimation) of highly-concentrated, highly-potent cannabis waxes and resins.
Unlike the plant’s flower buds which may only contain cannabinoid levels upwards of 30%, concentrates (such as live resin, BHO wax, shatter, etc) routinely have cannabinoid concentrations well in excess of 90%. In other words, they are MUCH more potent than traditional smoking or even vaporization methods.
Typically, the act of dabbing is done with super strong THC-concentrates in order to get incredibly high. The raw marijuana flower is processed via a range of different methods in order to extract the plant’s active compounds (either THC or CBD) into their pure, concentrated form.
However, because CBD does not directly act on receptors in the brain like THC does, it does not get you high. Rather, it works by influencing receptors and neurotransmitters throughout the body’s immune system, cell tissues, and organ systems to promote general homeostasis and a wide range of health benefits. So why would anyone feel the need to “dab” CBD for maximum potency, if they don’t even get a psychoactive response from it?
Dabbing CBD Might Help Relieve Symptoms When Regular CBD Oil Doesn’t
The typical method of CBD consumption is by way of oil tincture, which the patient administers sublingually by placing drops under the tongue and swallowing. Since hemp-derived CBD (i.e. cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC) is legal, patients can order it and have it safely shipped to their doorstep in all 50 states.
However, even though most CBD oils come in a range of different strengths, some users find that even the most potent products are not strong enough to provide therapy for their medical symptoms. Most commonly, patients who suffer from excessively severe symptoms of anxiety, pain, and even depression are unable to find relief with high-potency CBD oils.
This is where the act of dabbing CBD comes in.
Can You Dab CBD Oil?
To be clear, you cannot dab CBD oil. The act of dabbing has to involve a specifically-produced concentrate, and like we mentioned earlier, these concentrates/extracts come in a variety of different forms, including shatters, waxes, and resins.
As you might guess, then, depending on where you live (i.e. if you live in a state where weed is legal or not), obtaining a “dabbable” CBD concentrate may be a little more difficult than obtaining a simple CBD oil.
Basically, the majority of CBD concentrates are produced from the hemp plant. Unlike THC which primarily exists in the flower buds of the marijuana plant, CBD can be found throughout hemp – including in its leaves, flowers, and even stems. As such, in order to be made into a CBD-rich concentrate, raw hemp material needs to be ground up and processed (typically by way of butane extraction) in order to extract the natural, pure CBD resin.
Once extracted, the CBD-rich resin needs to be further processed in order to remove any of the excess butane material. If done correctly, a properly-produced CBD concentrate will leave you with a thick, sticky, gooey, ultra-potent CBD “wax” (or shatter, butter, etc, depending on texture/consistency) that is ready to be vaporized on your dab rig.
Also, it does merit pointing out that CBD concentrates can also be produced from high-CBD, low-THC cannabis strains, rather than hemp. Therapeutic strains such as Charlotte’s Web, ACDC, and Cannatonic have all been specifically bred to contain very potent amounts of CBD, and virtually no psychoactive THC. Of course, though, unless you have a medical marijuana card or live in a recreationally legal state where you can visit a reputable dispensary, it may be super tough to find these particular CBD-rich strains, or even “dabbable” CBD concentrates in general.
How to Dab CBD
If you are able to secure a quality CBD concentrate, then of course you will need a dab rig in order to, well, do your “dabbing.”
Dab rigs come in a massive variety of sizes and styles, and you can also choose from a range of different nails (the part of the rig where the concentrate is actually vaporized) in order to suit your particular habits and specific tastes.
Like we mentioned earlier, dabbing offers the opportunity to consume cannabis (whether it’s THC or CBD-rich) at much stronger potencies than normal. As such, if you are taking a CBD oil (or other CBD product like a topical or edible) and are experiencing acceptable results, there is no point in increasing your dosage by dabbing. The only people who shift to dabbing are those who do not see results from standard oil tinctures.
When you dab CBD (or any cannabis concentrate, for that matter), it is suggested that you only take one hit, or “dab,” at first, and then go from there. Like we’ve said several times, dabbing is incredibly potent and is very different from regular smoking, and especially from taking a CBD oil. As such, its effects may surprise you and catch you off guard if you’re not prepared.
If you are suffering from abnormal or excessive levels of pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or any other range of medical challenge and have not had success with sublingual CBD oils, then perhaps dabbing CBD may be a solution for you.
However, it is very important to understand that dabbing is in no way a “recommended” medical dosage, or even an acknowledged medical consumption method. It’s highly recommended that you speak with a physician about your condition if at all possible, and that you take full responsibility and discretion if you do decide to try dabbing CBD for pain, anxiety, or any other ailment.

Again, we stress that dabbing CBD is in no way a guaranteed way to treat your medical condition. While many thousands of people have used it to alleviate a wide range of pain (and other clinical symptoms), not all individuals respond the same to the active cannabinoids.
