How CBD Helps Pain

CBD, known scientifically as cannabidiol, is the second most common cannabinoid within the marijuana plant, ranking just below THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). What is unique and distinctive about CBD, is that unlike THC, the cannabinoid produces zero intoxicating effects. This means it does not create the typical high and euphoria that is linked with marijuana.

Furthermore, CBD has shown to display a multitude of medically beneficial abilities. CBD helps pain on an anatomical level by directly targeting the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system naturally produces cannabinoids on its own, known as endocannabinoids.

The ECS may be responsible for assisting in certain body processes, including sleep regulation, pain control, and immune system responses. CBD, through its interaction with the ECS, has been found to positively impact inflammation, anxiety, sleep, and pain – among other conditions.

Furthermore, CBD may be capable of helping alleviate various types of pain within the body, including:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Muscle soreness
  • Cramping
  • Tendonitis
  • Inflammation
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Menstrual cramps

As you can see, there are variety of conditions that may be influenced on a physiological level by CBD. Certainly, however, much more research needs to be carried out in order to better understand this fascinating compound. Without improved research, we will not be able to fully utilize the natural properties of cannabidiol.

Medical Research on CBD for Pain

That said, due to the increase in recent popularity researchers have begun conducting studies regarding the efficiency of CBD for pain management (as well as a variety of other medical uses). The results have shown to be rather remarkable and positive, confirming many of the claims made about CBD’s effectiveness.

For example, in 2016 theEuropean Journal of Pain conducted a study on rat models to test the effectiveness of CBD against arthritis. This was done to see if CBD might be able to serve as an all-natural alternative to typical arthritis medications. As you know, many of these medications are tied with uncomfortable and frustrating side effects. The rats were treated for four days with four different doses of CBD gel, and the results were quite staggering.<

In spite of the short duration of treatment, the rats showed a significant decrease in inflammation, as well as significant lessening of pain. Further, no side effects were noted. This produced the conclusion that CBD might, in fact, act as an alternative to conventional arthritis medications and treatments.

Additionally, the following assertment was made in a 2017 publication by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine:“In adults with chronic pain, patients who were treated with cannabis or cannabinoids [were] more likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in pain symptoms.” This statement is quite a massive development for increasing acceptance of CBD and CBD-based products.

These are only two examples among a growing body of research that has shown both CBD oils and CBD topicals to be beneficial in reducing pain.

What Is Topical CBD Cream?

CBD topicals, like creams and ointments, are produced when the extracted oils from marijuana or hemp are infused into a base.

Many topical creams, ointments, salves, etc. contain small quantities of THC, but not enough to have any intoxicating effects. Of course, ointments can differ from creams in texture, consistency, and often times potency.  Ointments are of a semi-solid consistency, while creams typically involve water or some type of aqueous substance as their base.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil differs from CBD topicals in that it is produced differently, and that it is typically consumed orally. CBD oils vary in potency, depending upon the source of extraction. Both industrial hemp and marijuana can be used to extract amounts of CBD to infuse in the oil.

CBD oils that are produced from industrial hemp instead of marijuana are recognized as legal throughout the United States. Marijuana-derived products present a bit more of a legal “grey area,” but are permitted throughout many of the 50 states. Most vendors of CBD oil offer doorstep delivery, making it convenient and easy to receive your CBD purchases.

The purest method of CBD oil extraction is a complex process that must be conducted by a skilled and experienced professional. This method is called CO2 extraction, and it utilizes carbon dioxide under a high pressure environment and extremely low temperatures.

This combination retains the supreme purity of the compound, allowing top quality products to be produced from the developed extracts. Other extraction methods are significantly less pure, and may lead to toxins in the final product.

CBD Oil vs CBD Topical: Which Works Best for What?

For pain management, both topical and oral CBD may work well. However, few realize that the most effective relief is produced when utilized together. Oral CBD may also assist in the diminishing of symptoms from insomnia, anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. Topicals may work to help reduce things like:

  • Inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Headaches
  • Cramping
  • Migraines

Further, some evidence has suggested that CBD topicals may be able to help with the symptoms of skin conditions, including things like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and itching.

CBD Oil or CBD Cream for Pain: Final Verdict

Both CBD oil and CBD topical products have their own unique and significant uses throughout the medical world. They both may be capable of healing and diminishing pain and inflammation. Ultimately, the choice comes down to what you need it for and which method, or combination thereof, works best for you.

And lastly, don’t underestimate the disparity that exists between various CBD products in terms of quality. The hemp industry is not regulated in the same way that the medical cannabis industry is. As such, CBD users must be wary of where the product they’re using is coming from, and how it was made.

Be sure to do plenty of research before purchasing, and make sure that your CBD product is free of harmful ingredients. Lastly, ensure that the product you’re using has been tested in an independent laboratory for both purity and CBD content.
