Learning about and understanding the benefits of CBD for your own personal use is one thing, but deciding on a specific type of product that works for you (and/or finding one that you actually enjoy taking) can be another thing altogether.

Indeed, there are dozens and dozens of different “forms” of CBD out there on the market, from standard oral tinctures that you place under the tongue, to edible gummies, softgel capsules, and topical creams that you massage into the skin. Some companies are even developing CBD suppositories!

As a consumer, this can understandably make things a little difficult when it comes time to choosing a CBD-based product that’s suitable for you and your needs. Do you opt for the conventional CBD oil drops, or go with the convenience of CBD in pill form? Do you take the mouth-watering advantages of CBD gummies, or are you aiming to treat localized joint pain and inflammation?

In this article, in addition to discussing all the different forms of CBD products currently available, we explain the advantages and disadvantages of each so that you can choose an effective product that will be reliable and beneficial for you and your needs. Enjoy!

How Many Different Types of CBD Products are there?

If you sat on the internet for hours and hours on end, you could surely find hundreds of different “types” of CBD products out there for sale online – especially when you take into consideration things like flavor variations, etc.

When you break it down more generally however, you’ll see that most CBD products fall into five main categories:

  • CBD oils
  • CBD pills/capsules
  • CBD vapes (including things like dabs and wax concentrates)
  • Topical CBD creams
  • CBD edibles (including CBD gummies)

There are other forms of CBD products out there (things like CBD beverages, suppositories, lozenges, etc), but these are much less common and typically would fall under a “miscellaneous” category. We’ll talk more about these ‘uncommon’ CBD products later in the article.

The real question is, how do you choose between the different types of products out there? In other words, what’s the ‘functional’ difference between CBD oils and CBD gummies, for instance – and how do you know which one is better for you and your needs?

Let’s take a look.

How to Choose the Best Type of CBD Product for Your Individual Needs

Realistically, standard CBD oils (i.e. the ones that you drop below the tongue and then swallow) have been – and remain to be – the most common form of CBD consumption.

Since these oils are absorbed via small capillary beds below the tongue, they maximize the amount of active CBD compound that is available for use by the body’s cells. This is because metabolic loss through the digestive system is entirely bypassed – the CBD is absorbed straight into the bloodstream and very little is lost.

CBD oils are most often used to help with things like stress and anxiety, but can also be used to help with things like migraine headaches, inflammation, seizures, and even mild forms of chronic pain.

Of course, even the best CBD oils have their drawbacks and disadvantages – namely, some people find that they do not taste all that wonderful, and the fact that you have to hold them below the tongue before swallowing can be cumbersome and inconvenient for many people.

This is where other forms of CBD products can become advantageous. CBD pills and capsules are incredibly convenient in that all you have to do is swallow them with a gulp of water, but then again, you are likely to lose some of the compound’s bioavailability during metabolic loss in the digestive system.

CBD vape oils can be a very potent (and tasty) method of consuming cannabidiol, but the idea of inhalation is (understandably) not appealing to every individual.

Also, topical CBD creams and lotions have become a very viable option over the years, though these products are typically reserved for those suffering from joint pain, and/or various forms of skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

Lastly, CBD gummies (and other forms of CBD edibles) can be a wonderful option for those who don’t enjoy the “earthy” taste of CBD oil. In addition the variety of flavors and the great taste, most CBD gummies offer a potent dose (up to 25mg) of the active compound – more than enough to offer relief from a variety of ailments and medical challenges.

While CBD oils are incredibly beneficial in their own way, more and more people are starting to prefer the chewy (and tasty) doses of CBD gummies. They are a great, fun way to get your daily cannabidiol fix, and indeed they generally offer all the same therapeutic benefits as conventional CBD oil.

“Miscellaneous” CBD Products: Get a Load of These!

Of course, an article that discusses all the different forms of CBD products would not be complete without acknowledging some of the more wild cannabidiol creations out there. And believe us, people have gotten pretty creative over the years in an effort to distinguish themselves from the competitive wolfpack that is the contemporary cannabis industry.

One of our personal favorites has got to be the recent introduction of CBD suppositories. For the uninitiated, a suppository is a small medicinal capsule that is “introduced” into the body, typically via the rectum. Once inside the body, the capsule’s skin layer dissolves, allowing the medication to be absorbed through capillary beds in the inner mucosal lining. Believe it or not, this is actually a very potent and effective method of delivering CBD to the body’s cells – no matter how awkward of a concept it may be.

Another increasingly popular method of consuming CBD is in the form of concentrate waxes, shatter, and crumble – often referred to collectively as “dabs.”

These products can be used in a dab rig or portable electronic vaporizer, and typically offer doses of CBD that are much more potent than a standard dose you’d receive from a sublingual tincture or oral capsule.

CBD beverages (including things like CBD syrup and CBD tea or coffee) are also becoming increasingly popular, as they present another option for consuming cannabidiol in a convenient, effective, and delicious format.

Lastly, some companies out there have gotten really creative in terms of developing new forms of CBD products, specifically with the introduction of things like CBD-infused toothpicks, CBD transdermal CBD patches, and even CBD “beard oil” that apparently has the capacity to take your facial hair game to the next level!

All things considered, customers these days have no shortage of options when it comes to selecting unique and interesting new products, and we can only wait to see what the next ingenious invention might be! (For now, though, we’ll go ahead and stick with the conventional CBD oils and tasty CBD gummies)

The Best Forms of CBD Products: A General Summary

At the end of the day, the type of CBD product that you choose individually should come down to what exactly you’re wanting (and expecting) to get out of the product. If taste is of no concern to you and you don’t mind the mild inconvenience of having to place oil droplets under your tongue, a high-quality CBD oil is still probably the best and most reliable method of consumption.

However, if you’re looking for a “tastier” option and/or would like to be able to take CBD at work or out in public in a more discreet manner, CBD gummies are an excellent option that is becoming increasingly potent and effective for a wide range of conditions. In fact, many CBD gummies these days offer doses upwards of 25 mg for a single gummy, which is a potent serving that’s capable of offering relief for a variety of ailments, both physical and mental.

Whatever form of CBD you choose to take, make sure you invest in a reputable, well-made, reliable product – and have fun shopping!
