It’s very common for people to smoke marijuana in the evening, before bed time. Furthermore, research has shown over time, that it has a profound effect on sleeping disorders, commonly known as insomnia.
The main reason why marijuana is so effective is that it has unique chemicals known as cannabinoids, that mimic the activity of chemicals found in the brain. These chemical make up the endocannabinoid system, which is mainly responsible for regulating sleep.
What was once thought of as an addictive drug, is now being researched on a daily basis due to marijuana’s unique compounds. It is a truly amazing plant and its exposure over the last couple of years is showing that it is transforming people’s lives around.
So…here are most updated reasons why you should smoke weed before you go to sleep.
1. It Helps You Fall Asleep
It is important to take the right dose to ease your sleeping problems, and this is something that you should consult with a physician.
With all that being said, a study published in 1973, showed that THC reduced the time it took for 9 subjects with insomnia to fall asleep by over an hour on average. Once asleep, interruptions of sleep were not significantly altered over the whole night.
Another study published in 2013, found that higher evening THC and 11-OH-THC concentrations were significantly associated with shorter sleep latency, less difficulty falling asleep, and more daytime sleep the following day.
2. Longer and Deeper Sleep
The brain works in mysterious ways, and when adding marijuana to the equation, it is even harder to understand. Early studies revealed that THC and CBD have a positive impact on the amount of time you sleep while THC tends to send you off into a deeper sleep. It is known for increasing the slow-wave sleep, also referred to as deep-sleep.
3. Better Breathing
When referring to medical use, marijuana tends to have a profound effect on people in different ways. For some, it even helps their breathing patterns under specific situations.
Apenea, for example, is a sleeping disorder that disrupts breathing during sleep and has been linked to a number of serious conditions, including diabetes and heart problems. While the vast majority of suffers remain undiagnosed and untreated, research is now shedding some light on this disorder, showing that marijuana could be an effective treatment.
There is a lot of controversy on marijuana and sleep, particularly since marijuana is thought help people fall asleep, but have an adverse effect during sleep, reducing the REM sleep.
This basically means that it reduces the occurrences of dreaming, something that is thought to happen due to marijuana’s tendency to blunt dopamine response, which creates dreams.
Do we need the REM sleep? Well according to some scientists, it helps regulate neurotransmitter levels and body temperature and keeps our brains busy while our body flushes out toxins.
Research hasn’t yet come up with conclusive results regarding the topic but what most experts agree on is that it is best to consume a type of marijuana plant categorized as Indica, rather than Sativa. Indica is known to have a more relaxing effect on the body compared to Sativa which is known to provide a more energizing feeling.
