Where to Buy Medical Cannabis in Florida: An Insider Look at All Licensed Dispensaries

Like most states, Florida has got a pretty bewildering assortment of rules and regulations when it comes to their legal medical marijuana program. For one thing, all participating MMJ companies in the state are supposed to be “vertically-integrated,” meaning each operation is responsible for “cultivating, processing, transporting, and dispensing [their own] medical marijuana and medical marijuana delivery devices.”

This is all well and good, but judging by the range of products for sale at some dispensary locations (we’re not going to name any names), it appears to be fairly easy to bend the state’s legislative rules and regulations.

Furthermore, there’s the ongoing debacle surrounding the Department of Health’s decision to ban “smokable” marijuana – a decision which has prompted Orlando-based attorney John Morgan to file a lawsuit against the state (things are currently looking pretty good for the “pro-smoking” crowd).

That said, it is of course a good thing that Florida has finally got their MMJ program up and running, as nearly 150,000 patients across the state now have access to safe and reliable cannabis-based medicine.

But as a medical patient, how are you supposed to know which Florida dispensary to go to? Are some better than others? Do some offer better prices and/or different products?

In this comprehensive article, we take an unbiased, in-depth look at each of the 14 MMTC’s (Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers) in the state, with the goal of compiling a top-to-bottom guide on where to buy medical marijuana in Florida.

Enjoy.

Buy Medical Marijuana in Florida: Understanding How the Dispensaries Work

As of 2019, there are already well over 230,000 total medical marijuana patients in the state of Florida. This may seem like a lot, but when you consider the fact that there are 76 operational MMTC’s (dispensaries) across the state, it appears to be a relatively manageable number. And of course, this is not including several licensed dispensaries that operate on a delivery-only basis.

Even still, if you are an MMJ patient in the state of Florida and have ever sampled products from more than one company, you may be wondering – ‘is there really any difference in quality from one dispensary to another?’

This is a good question, and is one that actually sparked us to tackle this article and put together our own (opinion-based) list on where to buy medical cannabis in Florida.

As we mentioned earlier, licensed marijuana dispensaries in Florida are supposed to operate on a ‘vertically-integrated’ basis. Essentially what this means (from our understanding) is that companies are not allowed to buy products from outside companies, and then turn around and sell them in their own dispensary. In other words, every product on a dispensary location’s shelves (including delivery devices like flower pods and vape pens), must have been grown and processed (extracted) “in-house.”

With this in mind, it would make complete sense that product variations might exist from company to company – at least in terms of the price and overall quality of the product. And indeed, this more or less seems to be the case. (Well, depending on who you talk to).

Furthermore, the “vertically-integrated” rule means that each of Florida’s 14 medical marijuana dispensary companies must grow their own cannabis. We have reached out to every company in the state in an effort to find out where their cultivation farms are, how many they have, and what types of strains they grow. As you’ll see, some company’s operations seem to be more impressive (to put it nicely) than others.

Another thing that you’re likely already aware of if you’re a qualified MMJ patient is the fact that the state of Florida does not allow you to smoke your medicinal cannabis. Rather, you must administer the medicine in the form of an oral tincture (cannabis oil), a vaporizer, or an infused topical lotion.

Again, this is another Florida-specific regulation that seems to make little sense, particularly when considering that some of the vape oils sold contain THC levels in excess of 80% – far more than even the most potent strains of flower (which rarely exceed 30% THC).

Anyway, without further ado here is a general rundown of the 14 medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida, and where they are available across the state (keep in mind that this information is ever-changing; if you notice that something is incorrect or out-of-date, please don’t hesitate to let us know).

Criteria Used to Rank the Best Marijuana Dispensaries in Florida

As is the case with most states that have an operational MMJ program, there has been (and still is) a fair amount of confusion and disorganization that surrounds Florida’s medical marijuana program. As of early 2019, there are 14 authorized dispensaries (MMTC’s) in the state, but as far as our research showed, only seven of them have physical retail locations where you can walk in and actually buy cannabis products.

Four of the dispensaries are currently listed as “delivery only,” meaning they do in fact sell cannabis products but they don’t have any physical storefronts. The other three (MedMen, 3 Boys Farms, and Green Owl Pharms) are not currently operational (at least to our knowledge) for retail consumers.

In terms of ranking, our criteria for each of the 14 medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida was largely based on the range of product availability, as most any cannabis expert would agree that specific products are needed depending on what you’re actually trying to treat. Other criteria were mostly based on price, so you’ll find a table below that details head-to-head price comparisons between each company on a dose-by-dose basis.

Given that some MMTC’s have a much more dominant presence in the state than others (i.e. Trulieve, Surterra, Curaleaf), we figured it would not be fair (or relevant) to rank the dispensaries simply based on the number of locations that were available.

Ultimately, when it comes down to it quality is the most important thing that any medical marijuana dispensary should strive for, and there is indeed no shortage of high-quality products in the state of Florida.

So, if you’re wondering where to buy medical marijuana in Florida, we present to you our personal rankings of the top dispensaries in the state.

Where to Buy Medical Marijuana in Florida: Our Top Picks for the Best Dispensaries

1. TRULIEVE

It might seem pretty obvious to choose Trulieve as the best medical marijuana dispensary in Florida given that they have far and away the biggest presence (in terms of number of locations) in the state, but the simple fact is they offer competitive prices, have the largest range of products available, and boast generally excellent reviews from their massive customer base.

The only thing that kind of aggravated us about Trulieve was the fact that they sell their “proprietary” desktop vaporizer (which is apparently needed in order to vape their “proprietary” flower pods), for an ey-watering $750.

Other than that, Trulieve does appear to offer some of the highest-quality marijuana products in Florida. Here’s a general rundown of the company and their current operational status:

2. LIBERTY HEALTH SCIENCES

In terms of sheer quality, Liberty Health Sciences easily ranks up there as one of the best (if not the best) marijuana dispensary in Florida. The management team has experience in the Canadian market – which to date has been one of the most tightly regulated in the world – and in 2018, the brand earned the highest possible audit score of all active Florida MMJ dispensaries.

Their main disadvantage is that they don’t offer the same widespread availability as companies like Surterra and Trulieve, though we expect this to change in the coming years.

3. SURTERRA WELLNESS

With active locations all over the state, Surterra is no doubt another one of the best Florida marijuana dispensaries. Their storefronts tend to be extraordinarily clean, well-kept and professional, but the main drawback is that at over $0.15 cents per milligram of THC, their products appear to be some of the priciest in the state (at least according to our calculations).

That said, they are not astronomically more expensive than any other Florida marijuana dispensary, so this should not be a major deterrent if you are looking for a potent, very well-made vape oil or CBD tincture.

4. CURALEAF

CuraLeaf is a monstrous nationwide organization that actually has dispensaries in 10 other states besides Florida. If you’re the type who likes to support the smaller “mom and pop” type organizations, then you’ll probably want to look elsewhere (although considering how much it costs to open up a medical marijuana dispensary in Florida, we would venture to say that none of them are really “mom and pop” organizations).

That said, we have heard nothing but good things about CuraLeaf, and were impressed both with the prices they offered  and the range of products that they had on hand.

5. GROW HEALTHY

Grow Healthy is another delivery-only MMTC in Florida, and like most other operations, they offer free statewide delivery on their entire product range. Last we checked, the website claimed they were in the process of opening up storefront locations in the state, but specifics as to where these will be and when they will open remain to be determined.

With some of the cheapest prices in the state, however, Grow Healthy would likely be an excellent option for qualified Florida medical marijuana patients that do not have convenient access to an in-store dispensary.

 6.KSGNF (GTI/RISE DISPENSARIES)

KSGNF – currently known as GTI/Rise Dispensaries) appears to be a very high-quality operation, though the company itself appears to be much smaller scale than many of its competitors. They currently only offer vape oil cartridges, though they do offer a variety of different formulas (high-THC, 1:1, high-CBD) for reasonable prices.

Like Grow Healthy, this would likely be a good option for rural Florida MMJ patients, as they offer statewide delivery (they currently do not have any physical storefronts).

7. ALTMED FLORIDA (MüV)

AltMed is a Colorado-based company that has only fairly recently received their Florida approval to become a licensed MMTC. They already have three dispensaries up and running in the state, though their Florida website was “down for maintenance” during the entire period this review was written, which does not speak volumes about the company in terms of organization.

Their prices seem to be very average in comparison with other dispensaries in the state, though the only products they offer are vape oils, topical lotion, and oral tincture (flower did not appear to be available at the time of writing).

8. KNOX MEDICAL

Based on our review, Knox Medical products seem to be unnecessarily overpriced. For example, they sell a 30mL bottle of cannabis oil tincture for $90, while Trulieve sells a similar product for only $70.

Also, from the Florida-based customers we have talked to their staff are very friendly and highly knowledgeable, but some of their locations and the general appearance of some of their storefronts leave a little to be desired. If you live in a location where a Knox dispensary is your only option, then by all means check them out. If there are other options available, however, you may be able to save yourself a few bucks by going elsewhere.

9. VIDACANN

Vidacann currently only has a handful of dispensaries in operational status, but like most other medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida, they have big plans of expanding as much (and as soon) as possible. They also appear to specialize in CBD oil tinctures, and offer Colorado brand Stanley Brothers/Charlotte’s Web products (though we’re not sure exactly how this works given that all dispensaries in Florida are supposed to be vertically-integrated).

Prices are also on the pricier side compared to other dispensaries, but we have not heard anything negative in terms of the actual quality of their products.

10. SAN FELASCO NURSERIES

San Felasco is a delivery-only operation, though like AltMed, the website was down during the entirety of the review process – so we were not able to find any information about the company, available products, prices, etc.

12. COLUMBIA CARE FLORIDA

Columbia Care is another massive multi-state operation that has a presence in the medical marijuana market in twelve states (including Florida). They have traditionally been a very reputable company that produces top-quality products – the only reason they’re ranked so lowly here is because they were not active (in Florida) during the time of writing. Once they develop a presence in the state, look for them to garner a dominant foothold in terms of the total customer/patient base.

That said, one thing that was kind of confusing during our review was that they claim to sell sublingual (oral) tinctures, vape oils/cartridges, and capsules, even though they only have dosage and pricing information on their tinctures, (also there are no images, links to buy, etc).

13. MEDMEN

MedMen is not yet operational in the state of Florida, having only received their licensure in the middle part of 2018. Once they get up-and-running, however, expect this company (along with Columbia Care) to be Trulieve’s direct rival in terms of the number of storefronts.

MedMen already has a solid presence on the West Coast, and is generally regarded as one of the most reputable – and reliable – names in the medical marijuana industry. Like we said, expect this company to be one of Florida’s major hitters for 2019 and beyond. (As of late 2018 they had “secured prime retail locations” in Ft. Lauderdale, Miami Beach, West Palm Beach, St. Petersburg and Key West, and had plans to “expand the company’s footprint” in other retail areas that have “high visibility and heavy foot traffic”).

14. 3 BOYS FARM

From our research, it appears that Florida medical marijuana grower 3 Boys Farms has traditionally been a fruit and vegetable grower in the state, having only received their license as an MMTC in 2017. However, the operation has not seemed to have enjoyed much success to date, with a news story published in August 2018 regarding a former employee that sued the company on grounds of harassment (after the 3 Boys Farms manager accused him of “possible embezzlement of company funds”).

It does appear that the company still has plans to enter the retail medical marijuana market in Florida, however. The last we heard, they were establishing lease plans for storefront locations in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, North Miami Beach, Dania/Hollywood, Fort Myers, Port St. Lucie, Stuart and St. Petersburg, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville. Time will tell whether these plans come to fruition or not.

Price Breakdown of the Best Marijuana Dispensaries in Florida

The following table aims to break down the price of each of the best marijuana dispensaries in Florida based on a dose-by-dose basis. Since the most commonly-used products are vape oil cartridges, we are basing our price comparisons on a 30-day supply of medicine, assuming that an average “daily dose” equates to the inhalation of 10 mg of THC per day.

Of course, doses will vary from patient to patient and product to product, but the following information should provide a fairly clear representation of which are the most expensive marijuana dispensaries in Florida, and which are the cheapest.
