Storz and Bickel Vaporizers: The Complete Review (2018)

It’s no exaggeration whatsoever to say that one of the most reputable and well-established vape manufacturers in the cannabis industry is Storz and Bickel. Ever heard of the famous Volcano Vaporizer? Well, this is the brand that’s behind the now-iconic device.

Often referred to simply as S&B, the company is up there as one of the most successful in the entire industry, and they have been for quite some time. True innovators Markus Storz and Jürgen Bickel have been working together since 2002, when they officially became Storz and Bickel — the monsters that have all but taken over the vape market!

Even though the company has only been going since 2002, Markus Storz began developing technology way back in 1996 when he began working on herbal vaporizers. In fact, like we just mentioned we have Storz to thank for the Volcano Vaporizer, which was designed in 1999 and came to market in 2000 (can you believe it’s almost 20 years old!?).

Since the two came together, they have continued to raise the bar with their innovative vapes, and the creations (both desktop and portable) that they’ve introduced to the market are genuinely unlike anything we’ve seen before.

If you are new to Storz and Bickel, you may be unsure where to begin, so here we have put together a fully comprehensive Storz and Bickel review. We take a detailed look at their most popular products (including an in-depth review of the Volcano Vaporizer) and some of their key features in an effort to see which one comes out on top! From appearance to functionality and price, let’s see what all the S&B fuss is about!

Volcano Vaporizer Review

The Volcano Vape is without a doubt the pioneer product of the desktop vaporizer market. The “OG” Volcano Classic was released back in 2000, but since then Storz and Bickel have released a couple new designs, including the Volcano Digital which came out in 2007. This was the company’s first ever electronically controlled vaporizer, and proves that over the last couple decades S&B have leading the vape market from the front of the pack.

In 2010 Storz and Bickel took it to a whole new level, though, with the release of the Mighty Medic; the first ever battery powered medical herbal vaporizer.

When it comes to next-level technology, S&B has truly paved the way for the future of cannabis vaporizing, which is reflected in both the quality and price of their products. A quick Amazon search, for example, will bring up the Volcano Classic at $450, while the Volcano Digit comes in at $750 – not the cheapest vaporizers out there, but by far some of the best you can get, and a worthwhile investment for those serious about at-home vaping!

Review of the Volcano Vaporizer Classic

Starting with the desktop vaporizer that kicked things off all those years ago, the Volcano Classic is the first in the line of world-renowned devices by S&B. Not only was the Volcano Classic the first ever fan-operated air vaporizer to gain such a high level of commercial exposure and popularity, but it has also been the first to incorporate the patented balloon technology that made it so innovative and unique.

Weighing in at 3.5 lb, this is a stationary device that requires a constant source of electricity to run. It is not the smallest addition to your home; however, if size is not a concern then you are guaranteed to love this vaporizer! Not only is the vape of astounding quality, but it is also incredibly easy to use with just a few minutes heating time needed before you can jump straight in with your “product” (the company steers clear of claiming they are made specifically for cannabis).

The temperature of this vape can be adjusted across nine settings, with an adjustable wheel and can range from around 130°C to 230°C. Along with the vaping unit itself, the Volcano Classic also comes with the all of the following additional parts:

  • Easy Valve Balloon with Mouthpiece
  • Easy Valve Balloon with Adapter
  • Filling Chamber for Herbs
  • Filling Chamber Clip
  • Filling Chamber Ring
  • Normal Screen Set
  • Liquid Pad
  • VOLCANO Air Filter Set
  • Herb Mill
  • Cleaning Brush

While Volcano Vaporizers may seem like an expensive purchase, you are paying for something that is likely to last a very long time, and also comes with a three year warranty for extra security. In all honesty, it is a long-term investment that you will hold its value over the years and even decades.

Both the build of the product and the quality of the vapor make it one of the best vaporizers that have ever been made, and thus it really is a cheap option for such an outstanding vape machine. From the innovative Volcano bag to the simple and straightforward requirements to use the unit, we can’t get enough of the Vaporizer Volcano!

What makes this range even better is that both the Volcano Classic and the Volcano Digit come with an easy valve start set which allows you to replace the bag rather than throwing it out with the old mouthpiece! Realistically this can save you a bunch of money, and is super simple to do.

Storz and Bickel: Mighty Vaporizer Review

Storz and Bickel Mighty Vaporizer

The Storz and Bickel Mighty Vape is perhaps one of the most powerful handheld portable vaporizers we have come across in some time. Using a patented combination of full hot air convection heating and additional conduction, you can be sure that you are getting a “mighty” amount of vapor with every draw!

Designed with simplicity in mind, the Mighty is super easy to use with the the temperature control being easily accessible on the front of the device itself. Also, the Mighty vaporizer comes in at $348.00 and now has 20% MORE battery power, making it a worthy investment. Here are all the features that come with the Storz and Bickel Mighty Vape:

  • MIGHTY Vaporizer
  • Power Adaptor 240 Volt
  • Spare Seal Sings
  • 3 X Spare Screen
  • Liquid Pad
  • Filling Aid
  • Herb Mill
  • Dosing Capsule
  • Cleaning Brush
  • Instructions for use

For those looking for an easy to use and high-quality vaporizer, this is certainly a top contender. The only downside here is arguably the size – S&B have kept their focus on the way the vape will run, rather than how it looks (which depending on your personal preferences could be seen as a good or bad factor).

Also, the guys at Storz and Bickel have made the Mighty Vape pretty easy to clean; it comes with a cleaning brush already, so all you need is some isopropyl alcohol and some paper towels. For a thorough clean, a small pokey device (like a pipe cleaner) that you can use to get into those nooks and crannies will be great. Realistically you need to be giving your Mighty a thorough clean every 4-6 weeks, depending on how often you are using it. However, the whole cleaning process will be much easier if you keep on-top of the general maintenance of your vape from the get-go!

Storz and Bickel: Crafty Vaporizer Review

crafty vape

At first glance, the Storz and Bickel Crafty vaporizer looks a lot like the Mighty, and actually, there are few differences between the two. One thing that sets the Crafty apart is its Remote Control App for your mobile, giving you the option to personalize your experience if you want to! From the comfort of your app, you can alter the LED brightness and the temperature settings with ease!

The Crafty is a great option for those who prefer a discreet, portable vaporizer. While the Mighty is large and in charge, the Crafty is much smaller and easier to take around with you on the go (although the design and initial appearance are pretty much the same all other things considered).

It may be smaller, but the Crafty vaporizer is super strong and retains the delicious flavor of the vaporizer with no contaminated tastes! Here is what you can expect from the Crafty vaporizer, which retails for $298.00 (making it fairly cheaper than the S&B Mighty):

  • CRAFTY Vaporizer
  • Power Adapter with USB Cable
  • Spare Seal Rings
  • 3X Spare Screen
  • Liquid Pad
  • Filling Aid
  • Herb Mill
  • Dosing Capsule
  • Cleaning Brush
  • Instructions for use

Storz and Bickel: Plenty Vaporizer Review

We would put good money on it that you have never seen another vape quite like the Storz and Bickel Plenty! The desktop Vape that looks insane, with power and vapor production being as close to smoking the “real thing” as you can get. The sheer power in the Plenty means it produces plenty of vapor with perfect flavor retention and a super smooth taste. Not only this, but it also easy to clean and maintain! Don’t be fooled by its appearance (which may look wacky), but the S&B Plenty is really easy to “get along” with. The chamber for this device is huge, so if you wanted to you could pack her full!

The Plenty vape has a cooling coil incorporated, which means not only do you get a smoking experience that is super smooth (and won’t leave you drawing hard), but it also ensures it cools super efficiently! If the Volcano doesn’t speak to you, then we think the Storz and Bickel Plenty vape might just do the job. With a retail price of $248.00, let’s see what you get with the Plenty:

  • PLENTY Vaporizer
  • PLENTY Vaporizer Unit
  • Tubing Section, long
  • Tubing Section, short
  • 3X Normal Screen
  • Liquid Pad
  • Herb Mill
  • Cleaning Brush
  • Instructions For Use

There aren’t many faults to pick with this device, as it is such a fantastic build and the quality is just second to none. Of course, it is difficult to compare to the OG pioneer vape that is the Volcano, though.

Regardless, the Plenty has a lot to offer to the at-home smoker, even if the options that come with the device could be taken as slightly limiting. With just seven preset temperature options, for instance, it could be a reason to dislike this vape – particularly if you are vaping vet and have specific preferences. Overall, though, the Plenty is extremely well-priced for the high standards of the device, and offers a brilliant vaping experience.

Storz and Bickel: Volcano Easy Valve

Easy Valve Vape

Designed to complement the Volcano vaporizer device, the East Valve fixtures enhance the ease of your experience 10-fold! The Easy Valve pre-set Balloon size allows you to enjoy all the power of the Volcano with your individual mouthpiece, and the bags themselves are super low-maintenance and work extremely efficiently with no condensation, odor or draw resistance. Once a bag is no longer usable, simply toss it out and replace it with a new one – simple!

For $99.00 you can purchase the Easy Valve Starter Kit, which allows you to get everything you will need for immediate vaping! The Easy Valve Startere Kit comes with all of the following:

  • 4X EASY VALVE Balloon with Mouthpiece
  • EASY VALVE Balloon with Adapter
  • Filling Chamber for Herbs
  • 3X Filling Chamber Clip
  • Filling Chamber Ring
  • Normal Screen Set
  • Liquid Pad
  • Cleaning Brush

Also, everything in the Starter Kit is fully compatible with both the Volcano Classic and the Digit, and is a fantastic way to enhance your Volcano experience while giving you a different way of using it (as compared to the solid valves). What’s more is that they look awesome! Watch as your balloon fills with vapor, and then when it is full get ready to take the pull of your life.

Volcano Solid Valve

Volcano Solid Valve

Along with the Easy Valve, all Storz and Bickel Volcano desktop vaporizers can be used with the S&B Solid Valve. Unlike the Easy Valve that comes with balloons already at a certain size, you can choose the size of your balloon with the solid valve.

The Solid Valve is made from durable stainless steel and is heat resistant and a cheaper option than the easy valve for those looking to save money where possible. Storz and Bickel offer a Solid Valve Set which will set you back just $99.00, and comes with all of the following:

  • SOLID VALVE with Balloon
  • Balloon Tube
  • Mouthpiece
  • Filling Chamber for Herbs
  • SOLID VALVE Normal Screen Set
  • Liquid Pad
  • Cleaning Brush

The Complete Storz and Bickel Vape Review Guide:

VAPE QUALITY SIZE PURPOSE ADVANTAGE ADDITIONAL
PLENTY Amazing Vapour quality. The Plenty is an at-home unit. Great for multiple people to use due to mains battery power. Bigger in scale, bigger in power! Very large herb chamber.
CRAFTY Similar in quality of vapour. Much smaller, highly portable device. Only suitable for single person use, as the battery wouldn’t last long for more. Super convenient and easy to use and control! Perfect for discreet, on-the-go vaping.

VAPE SIZE BATTERY HEAT UP TIME ADD-ONS
MIGHTY The mighty is a much bigger device. Can be difficult to travel with. The Mighty has DOUBLE the battery life compared to the smaller Crafty vape. The Mighty heats up much faster than the Crafty. The Mighty is less nifty with its technology. No app, but does have ascreen which displays temperature and battery life.
CRAFTY More portable and discreet, perfect for travel. Takes a longer time to charge (approx. 2 hours) Can take a while to heat up. Innovative smartphone app for IOS and Android so you can personalize your experience.

Volcano Easy Valve Vs. Solid Valve: What is the difference?

When it comes to whether you should opt for the Volcano Easy Valve or the Solid Valve, it is entirely down to personal preference. But what is the difference between these two valves?

The Volcano Easy Valve comes in two sizes, standard or XL, and it is super easy to use (as the name suggests!). There is really no cleaning needed with this because once it is no longer of use, you simply discard it and get a brand new one. While this is wonderfully simple and convenient, though, it is also more costly over a long period.

The downside of the Volcano Solid Valve is that it gets sticky quickly, and thus often requires a regular cleaning routine to keep it nice and effective! If left to build up, the performance of the solid valve will drop dramatically.

So really the question is what would you prefer: convenience or affordability!?

VAPE USABILITY BALLOON PRICE
VOLCANO EASY VALVE No need for cleaning or upkeep, simply use and toss. Pre-set balloon sizes. Much more expensive in the long-run.
VOLCANO SOLID VALVE Super durable build with stainless steel and heat resistant plastic You can choose the preferred size of balloon to use. Extra balloon material is pretty low-cost, so more cost effective.

Conduction vs. Convection Vaporizers

When shopping around for the perfect vaping device, many of us look for appearance, affordability, and quality as the main selling points of any product. However, those who are in the know will tell you that vapes fall into two categories; conduction vapes vs convection vapes.

Based on the way they heat up determines which camp they will fall into, and there are of course some benefits to both types. While conduction generally involves the passing of heat around an item to get it heated up, convection needs a source of heat in which the object can make direct contact with.

While many vaporizers opt for conduction heating to allow for better temperature control, the Mighty vape uses both conduction AND convection to bring you the fantastic end product (that is , of course, the best cloud of your life!). While it uses conduction to heat your herb up, when you take a toke it switches to convection in order to draw the vapors up into your lungs.

Most desktop vaporizers use convection methods, and these can either be fan assisted or inhalation vortex. Part of the reason for their legendary status is the Volcano Vape ,which was the first vaping device to bring fan-assisted technology to the vaporizer market!

So ultimately, which is better – conduction or convection vaping? The answer to this isn’t simple, and it highly relies on the individual’s preference when it comes to vaping. However, there are some things that you can bear in mind when making your decision on conduction vs convection:

  • Convection-style vaporizers are considerably harder to maintain, and need much more cleaning than conduction vaporizers.
  • Convection vaporizers can get very hot, very fast!
  • Convection vaping may require a finer consistency of herb. This doesn’t matter as much with conduction heating, as the heat circulates and evenly heats.
  • Convection vaporizers tend to produce a stronger and tastier result.

Final Thoughts: Complete Storz and Bickel Vaporizer Review

There is no denying that Storz and Bickel have earned their legendary status as one of the leading vape producers in the industry. From their founding product, The Volcano Classic, all the way through to the Plenty Vape and the Might, the company seems to have come full-circle from desktop to portable and back to desktop again.

The technology and innovation behind S&B are unquestionable, and there is very little fault to pick with the production and build of each product they have brought to market. If you are all about looks and aesthetics then Storz and Bickel may not be for you, as their products are all about practicality and quality, with appearance admittedly not appearing to be a top priority.

However if you are on the market for a new vaporizer, or perhaps if this is your first vaping purchase, then we couldn’t recommend Storz and Bickel more as the perfect quality vaporizer that will last you decades to come!

Do not purchase the Crafty, you'll be disappointed!

I have had the pleasure of experimenting with quite a few different models of vaporizers, and the Crafty vaporizer is one that will fail you, leaving you disappointed, especially considering the cost. Please trust me that this is not a product you want to buy. The Crafty vaporizer used to be approximately $400, and this is what I initially paid for it, but the price has since been lowered over the last two years due to the poor quality of the product. The first Crafty I bought, stopped working within the first year. Pieces surrounding the bowl were falling off, not allowing the mouth piece to close properly. Storz and Bickel – in California, this is where all Crafty vaporizers have to be sent if there’s a problem with the product – said they would send me a brand new vaporizer and that my 2 year warranty would reset since I was receiving a new product. I thought this was great. Until the second Crafty vaporizer I received, had a faulty battery after only having it for 8 months. I didn’t send the product in right away, I was forgetful and not looking forward to the hassle of sending my second Crafty vaporizer back to California, yet again. More importantly, I knew I had 16 months left on my warranty, so there was no rush. When I tried to return the product, they said my vaporizer was no longer under warranty. I tried explaining that this was not the case, and that they should have under file that when the second vaporizer was sent to me, the warranty had reset. After all was said and done, they still said I owed $180 to have the faulty battery repaired, which was about half of what I paid for the product. (Just a note, you can sometimes get this problem fixed for free at your local stores. I’m not sure if Storz and Bickel know how to fix all problems with this vaporizer) Another concern I had with the Crafty vaporizer was that their customer service was atrocious. I tried calling several times a day, and not only would no one pickup, but they wouldn’t return my call (Even though they say in voicemail they will return your call in 24 hours). The only line I was able to get an answer from, was sales (go figure) and she was rude and not helpful with the situation. Another concern with this product I found was that it was very high-maintenance with the cleaning, especially compared to my Air II vaporizer, which by the way, is a terrific product. With the Crafty vaporizer, you have to take apart all of the pieces inside if you want a nice clean, which are very small and sometimes takes a long time to put back together. Overall, this product is not worth your time or money, especially considering the better and cheaper choices that are available now. Please believe me when I say, this product will fail you indefinitely.

The Mighty and then, the rest.

I own the PAX 3, but continued to read reviews and 2nd guess my purchase. I’ve been pleased with the PAX. High quality, great warranty, battery and heat up time. Good vapor production and flavor. But, about 2 weeks ago I could not help myself and ordered a Mighty. (I just had to know!) Felt pretty guilty until I used it, now that guilt is long gone. Yes, it’s big, pricey and certainly not sexy, but man does it work! So easy to use. Outstanding vapor production and flavor. One retailer that I talked to recently said, “There is the Mighty, and everyone else is competing for # 2!

It’s like this, “The PAX 3 is the girl you take out on Friday night, but the Mighty is the one you go home to.”

I had no idea about this company until I read this review! WOW – I got myself the Mighty and I LOVE IT! By far the best vape I have ever experienced, it might not be the smallest or best looking, but it more than does the job. I would say anybody looking for an upgrade try these guys out.
