There are numerous different ways to get your fix of CBD or THC these days; joints, edibles, blunts, wax, oil – and the list goes on. But despite all of these new and innovative approaches to cannabis use, one method remains constant. The bong is the go-to option for smoking marijuana. However, just as there is a variety of ways to consume marijuana products, there are also many different bongs to choose from.
The one that we are going to be focusing on today is the recycler bong. If you are a complete newbie and know nothing about this type of bong, we will fill you in on everything that there is to know. Believe it or not, recycler bongs have been taking the smoking world by storm for several years now, with their overall build and innovative function.
While the term “recycler bong” may have you thinking that it’s perhaps got something to do with the bong being made from recycled materials, this is not the case. They are called recycle bongs or “recyclers” based on the unique function that they serve. So what exactly is a recycler bong and how does it work?
What is a Recycler Bong?
Recycler bongs get their name from the way that they continuously recycle the water inside of them while the pipe is being smoked. This constant cycling of the smoke provides more filtered and cooler smoke – and this ensures a smoother smoking experience. They circulate the water and smoke throughout the bong in an almost infinite loop. Aside from the normal water chamber, they also have an additional water chamber that filters the smoke.
Recycler bongs use a two-chamber system as well as an uptake tube to move the water that contains vapor up through the piece before it is recycled back down again. Recyclers don’t only offer the user the smoothness of water filtration to their inhalations; they also do it in a way that efficiently cools the vapor. There are many users out there who now prefer recyclers over other bongs because of their extra filtration properties. Because of its various functions and incomparable hits, the recycler bong is perfect for both beginners and veterans.
Essentially, recyclers are made to keep the water and smoke moving in a circle around the pipe. This means that the smoke is exceptionally filtered and it allows you to get bigger hits than you could have imagined. Their purpose is to filter the smoke better and allow the user to pull even more smoke. The major and crucial difference of the wax rig on a recycler is that it has that additional chamber that funnels the smoke and water from the second chamber back up to the original chamber.
How Do Recycler Bongs Work?
By now, you are probably wondering how these recycler bongs that we speak of work. Let’s first explain the two separate compartments that make up the bong:
- The first compartment: This is the larger part of the bong found at the bottom of the tube – where the water is kept along with any filtration components and internal percolation.
- The second compartment: This is an offshoot of the main compartment – it’s where the water is sucked into, along with the smoke. This creates a vortex that constantly recycles the air and smoke to ensure that the smoke is filtered multiple times per hit.
These two compartments are separated by tubes that are called the intake and the drains.
So how does the intake on the recycler bong work? Well, when you inhale, the smoke is carried through the stem from a bowl. From the stem, it’s filtered through the water found in the main compartment of the bong, to create smoke. From here, the smoke moves through the intake and into the second compartment. Some water is transferred along with the smoke. This water then makes a pool at the bottom of the second compartment, and smoke is then filtered through it, back up to the main compartment through the drain.
Once it’s back in the main compartment, the smoke is filtered once more via the main percolators in the bong, and up through the intake. Then, as you inhale the smoke, some leaves, and hotter, less filtered smoke becomes trapped for further filtration via the recycler bong.
How does the drain on the recycler work? Once the smoke reaches the second chamber, you are able to inhale some of it. But, most of the smoke is recycled to the main part of the bong, because of the way that the suction works. This results in two key occurrences:
- Further filtration: By the time you have taken a complete hit from the bong, the chances are high that the smoke you are inhaling has already been filtered a handful of times.
- Smoke becomes smoother and cooler: The process of how a recycler bong works is, in fact, quite incredible to watch.
To summarize, recycler bongs work by filling the base with water and having the goods loaded into the downstem or nail. Once you light up, the smoke will travel via the downstem and into the base chamber where it mixes with the water for filtration. It then moves up through the intake stem and into the second chamber where vapors are released close to the mouthpiece – the water then falls back down into the base chamber where it’s recycled back through. The water that contains the vapor is processed through the bong as many times as you like. Recyclers typically have percolators at the base of the downstem to ensure that the filtering process is even better.
Different Types of Recycler Bongs
Recycler bongs are available in a few different types. Depending on their specific shape and design, each works a bit differently, but they all produce the same result. That is a smooth smoking experience that is really quite incredible to watch. Let’s take a look at the different kinds of recycler bongs.
This is the most common design of a recycler. They’re also referred to in the cannabis community as standard recyclers. In an external recycler, the bottom chamber and top chamber sit one above the other and are linked by an arm that loops around the outside. They are the simplest of the three designs and have the lowest amount of filtration, but they still work well.
Some of the advantages of this design are that they usually cheaper than the other two, they offer a similar experience and feel to the other types, and they are basically the same cost as a high-end regular bong. Disadvantages are that you don’t have as much filtration as the other two, and they can be difficult to clear because of the extra components on the outside of the bong.
This one is also often referred to as an “incycler,” and as the name suggests, it keeps everything internal. The design makes it look like an inverted coke bottle on the inside of the main chamber. This helps to keep the glass protected while giving the same benefits that a regular recycler would. Essentially, these are the opposite of an external recycler. Their draining pipes and intakes are within the bong itself.
Advantages of the incycler are that it’s smaller and more compact for travel and setup, they are often harder to break when compared to external recyclers, and they are the easiest to clean. Disadvantages are that they are usually a bit more expensive than external recyclers, and they don’t look as “cool” as the other types of recycler bongs.
The last type is the klein recycler, which is essentially a combination of the internal and external recyclers. They are made up of two different tubes – one for intake and one for drainage. This ensures that they don’t interfere with each other and act totally independently, providing filtration and percolation at the same time, but in different parts of the bong. This allows for maximum smoothness and efficiency. The klein recycler is widely regarded as being “insanely cool” – and ultimately the best kind of recycler bong.
Some of the advantages are that these certainly are the smoothest bongs on the market, the two separate tubes for drainage and intake ensure maximum efficiency, they are some of the coolest looking bongs, and they are the perfect gift for stoners. Disadvantages are that because of their complexity, they are the most expensive recycler bongs, and they can be difficult to clean.
Final Thoughts on Recycler Bongs
Recycler bongs are quickly becoming a favorite amongst regular weed smokers. Aside from providing the perfect hits, there are many other things that make these bongs so perfect. Although they are typically a little more expensive than other bongs, their coolness, quality of filtration, and flavor preservation surely make them worth the little bit of extra cash.
