In 2014, soon after hemp cannabidiol (CBD) became legal for sale, thanks to The Agricultural Act of 2014 (H.R. 2642; Pub.L. 113–79, also known as the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill), the CBD market exploded with companies offering a wide range of products. From CBD oil, edibles, tinctures and ointments to even CBD infused gummies and water. Since then CBD has become so big that it is set to skyrocket in terms of growth with the Hemp Business Journal suggesting the market will exceed $2 billion as early as 2020.
The proliferation of CBD sellers online means that consumers are spoiled for choice but must also be careful when making a purchase. After all, there is bound to be a few bad apples in every industry. In this article we’re pitting two giants head-to-head to see which one offers the best bang for your buck.
Continue reading to find out who won when PureKana, a leading CBD oil provider goes head on against the renown Charlotte’s Web.
About the Companies
PureKana is a fairly new company that has made a significant impact in a short space of time. It is based in Los Angeles and says it is dedicated to providing customers with the best quality hemp CBD products around for a price you can afford. There isn’t much in the way of information about the founders online, but we do know PureKana is a family run business that has quickly grown into a large enterprise. We’ve also received numerous feedback from some of our followers telling us that their oils have helped them with a wide range of products including; Anxiety, Pain and Depression.
CW Hemp was founded by the Stanley Brothers, and it is based in Colorado. The brothers gained fame for their role in reducing the number of seizures suffered by Charlotte Figi. They used a strain of marijuana (now renamed Charlotte’s Web = CW) to create CBD oil, and the young girl began taking it. Soon, the number of seizures she had was reduced from hundreds per week to 1-2 a month. CW Hemp has used its brand recognition well and is now one of the most trusted companies in the CBD Hemp industry.
PureKana has three CBD oil flavors (mint, natural, and vanilla) in three sizes:
- 300mg for $54
- 600mg for $95
- 1000mg for $139
They do offer some great coupons, which helps to reduce the price. For example, if you search online you’ll be able to find their standard 5% discount.
CW Hemp has three different CBD oil ranges: Everyday, Everyday Plus, and Everyday Advanced. The Everyday range is closest to PureKana in terms of potency and comes in olive oil and mint chocolate flavors. Here are the prices and estimated potency:
- 300mg for $39.99
- 1000mg for $99.99
The Everyday Plus range is much stronger; you get 2,500mg of CBD for $188.99, and the Everyday Advanced is the strongest of the lot with 5,000mg for $274.99.
Verdict: If you are going for the smaller mg bottles then CW Hemp comes out the winner. Please note that the larger mg bottles significantly jump in price, and therefore with PureKana you’ll be getting the best buck for your pocket.
All PureKana’s CBD products are derived from organically grown Colorado hemp. The company utilizes solvent-free CO2 extraction, and the oil is also free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and herbicides. Its products are also non-GMO, and its oil contains as little as 0.054% THC. Customers know precisely what they are getting from PureKana because the company has published a copy of its third-party lab test online.
While CW Hemp also uses organic hemp grown in Colorado, it admits that it isn’t yet ‘organic certified’ but hopes to achieve this status in the near future. As the name of the company suggests, CW Hemp specifically uses whole-plant extracts from Charlotte’s Web plants. These extracts contain a host of beneficial cannabinoids besides CBD including flavonoids, terpenes, and phytocannabinoids among a total of over 80 cannabinoids.
Verdict: It is almost impossible to split the two regarding quality because both companies use the best form of extraction and offer full-spectrum CBD products laden with goodness. Tie
It is important to note that CBD products have different effects on people, but we were very impressed both by our experience, and those of customers, in relation to both brands. An important aspect of both PureKana and CW Hemp’s CBD oils is that they have MCT coconut oil added to the list of ingredients to aid bioavailability. In layman’s terms, this means enhancing the efficancy.
If you’re suffering from a social anxiety disorder, we recommend using the lower strength versions of both products. If you have chronic pain and are in dire need of relief, you’ll find that CW Hemp and PureKana’s stronger offerings work every bit as well as prescription painkillers without the side effects.
You can use both brands to treat anxiety, stress, depression, chronic pain, migraines, joint pain, a wide range of social anxiety orders and a whole lot more. PureKana’s formula was specifically designed to treat pain, anxiety and depression, while CW Hemp originated from treating seizures and epilepsy.
Verdict: Another tie. Both brands are exceptional. It really depends on which medical condition you are trying to treat.
One of the problems with various CBD oil brands is that the product tastes awful! The thing is, natural CBD oil tends to taste less than appealing so what is a company to do? They could infuse it with sugar or sweeteners, but this process runs the risk of reducing the quality of the oil.
PureKana’s mint flavor is nice and does a good job of masking the CBD taste, but you can’t beat the vanilla version for taste because it is gorgeous! CW Hemp’s Mint Chocolate flavor is pretty tasty too, but we have to go with PureKana on this score.
There are three common CBD extraction types: Raw, Decarboxylated and Filtered and the last one offers the best quality oil. You will notice good-quality filtered CBD oil because it has a distinct golden coloring you won’t find with lesser grade oils.
Both PureKana and CW Hemp’s CBD oils have the look of olive oil with a similarly smooth, light and thin texture. Most importantly, you can clearly see the lovely golden oil color with both products.
Verdict: Tie. It is impossible to separate two brands that are A+.
We already know that both brands use full-spectrum CBD from organically grown plants but what else do they add to their products? There are a number of companies guilty of adding ingredients that amount to little more than filler.
PureKana’s CBD oil contains hemp extract, MCT oil, and natural flavors. In other words, there is nothing but MCT oil to aid bioavailability and flavors to enhance the taste. CW Hemp’s CBD oil contains hemp extract, MCT fractionated coconut oil, organic chocolate mint flavor oil (for the mint chocolate version), organic sunflower oil and natural flavors.
Verdict: We have to give a slight edge to PureKana which has slightly fewer ingredients.
Customer Service & Delivery
PureKana pledges to deliver your package within 4-7 working days. You will receive a full refund if you are not satisfied with your purchase and return it within 30 days. CW Hemp delivers packages in 7-12 days. It also offers a refund within 30 days if you’re unhappy with your purchase. Again, we cannot guarantee that this is the case with both brands, but that is what we were led to believe.
Furthermore, we cannot fault either company’s customer service level which is top notch. You can expect one of their team to get back to you ASAP.
Verdict: Another tie!
Although a company’s CBD oil quality is important, the top brands tend to offer several different options in case you want your daily dose of cannabidiol in some other form. PureKana offers CBD capsules; you get 30 for $83, and each one contains 25mg of CBD. You can also purchase CBD ointment. A 2-ounce tub contains 600mg of CBD and costs $75.
CW Hemp also offers capsules and topicals but have a greater choice of both. You can choose between Simply Hemp or Simply Hemp+ capsules. The former costs $34.99 for a 30 capsule bottle and $59.99 for 60 capsules; each one contains 15mg of CBD. The latter costs $69.99 for 30 and $119.99 for 60; each capsule contains 35mg of CBD.
CW Hemp’s topical range includes a container of balm for $14.99 (150mg of hemp extract) and hemp infused cream for $49.99 (contains 750mg of hemp extract). The brand also sells MCT oil for dogs and CW apparel consisting of t-shirts and sweatshirts.
Verdict: Even though PureKana has expanded its line of products over the last year we’d have to say that as CW Hemp has been around for a bit longer, it takes the win here.
PureKana’s website design is neat, clean and simple. It gets to the point and provides you with all the relevant information that you need. The purchasing process is dead easy and within a couple of minutes you can have your products delivered to your door step. You can even order everything from your phone.
CW Hemp’s website is a lot busier and contains a far greater degree of content. Its FAQ section alone is a treasure trove of information. It doesn’t have a blog which is odd; surely one of the seven Stanley brothers could take the time to update visitors on the world of CBD!
Verdict: Based on user experience and ease of use we’d have to go with PureKana.
This truly was a ‘Clash of the Titans’ and as you can see; PureKana and CW Hemp are evenly matched. While CW Hemp has the edge on pricing and product range, PureKana’s oil tastes a little better, has marginally fewer extra ingredients and it seems as if their products cater towards more common medical conditions.
Verdict: Both brands are among the best in the CBD industry, there is no question about that and therefore it comes down to a matter of personal choice.
