Sativa Strains

When it comes to cannabis, sativas by far allow for a more uplifting and upbeat high. They often pair well with social events and gatherings, and things with which you may need an extra ‘kick’ – sure to give you a little more pep to your step.

In comparison to their partners, indica strains, sativas are not as widely known for their sedating effects and are therefore used for having a fun and unforgettable experience. Hybrids also exist, which have some genes from both indica and sativa parent plants, and these provide a combination of mellow and peppy.

For now, for those searching for the perfect night out with friends at a social outing, or those looking for a cerebral high, look no further than a sativa-dominant strain! It is sure to give you all that you could need for the perfect evening out with friends or an energizing and productive night in checking off all those items on your to-do list. There are hundreds of strains to choose from, all with differing aromas, flavors, effects, and medical benefits. Add in all the hybrids, and that is one large pool of cannabis to choose from.

With all the choices of strains of sativa cannabis you have to pick from, we get that it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we here at MarijuanaBreak went ahead and did the hard work for you. Here are our top five picks for the most popular sativa strains of all time!

#1. Strawberry Cough

So, up for our first pick, we have the acclaimed Strawberry Cough. As its name implies, it tastes of strawberries and has the potential to make you, well, cough. This sweet and berry-licious sativa hybrid was crossbred by Kyle Kushman, a well-known cannabis engineer, back in the year 2000.

To get Strawberry Cough, Strawberry Fields was crossed with the Haze strain. Although it was created by mistake, it came to create the most perfectly harmonized combination of sweet and pungent earthy goodness and has been a real hit ever since. It has an average THC content of between 15 and 20%. The sweet, strawberry fruitiness of Strawberry Cough, in addition to its mood-boosting, euphoric properties, has led to it being one of the most well-loved strains of cannabis – from East Coast to West.

The Strawberry Cough is known for its incredible cerebral high which users have reported helping them become more focused, happy, social, and energetic. Many use it to help with social anxiety, fatigue, and depression, as well as help to increase appetite, as it may give you the munchies.

Despite all the amazing benefits, though, most people simply want to try it for its just purely amazing flavor. The luscious and irresistible Strawberry Cough tastes like a berry explosion in your mouth, and doesn’t have a skunky or sour aftertaste either! Through and through, this is a go-to for the fruit enthusiasts looking for an upbeat high.

#2. Sour Diesel

Up next we have the Sour Diesel strain. Sour Diesel is infamous for its very diesel-like aroma, but with that aside, it is quick to set in and will have your engines a-revving like no other. It came about in the 90s and is currently thought to have originated from the Super Skunk and Chemdawg strains. Others believe it is a cross between Super Skunk and Northern Lights. The marijuana industry was a bit on the DL in the late 80s and early 90s (the time in which it was created), so its origins have some debated history.

Fast-acting and long-lasting, Sour Diesel is a top hit amongst the medical marijuana community. As well as for the reasons of melting away stress, depression, anxiety, and pain. It mostly gives off a head high, and is best for depression and other ailments of the mind, but also can help ease physical pains as well. It is a really potent strain, and on average has a THC content level ranging from between 20 to 25%!

The buds appear somewhat chartreuse, with tiny red pistils. It smells like gasoline at first whiff. Upon crushing, you may start to notice a musky and forest-y aroma. Be prepared for when you smoke it though, it may have you feeling like a diesel engine just burned out in your face. Sour Diesel is known to give off a very overwhelming and dank cloud, so just a heads up! You might cough a bit and notice a funky aftertaste, and its smell can stick around for a while and also be noticed due to its pungent nature, but we assure you this powerhouse of a strain is worth a try!

#3. Acapulco Gold

Our third pick: Acapulco Gold. Originating in the area around Acapulco, Mexico, this strain is a real catch and is thought of as one of the best strains ever synthesized. Although it doesn’t have exact strain genetics, it is traditionally grown indoors and can have up to a whopping 23% THC!

With its gold/green hue, mixed in with the orange hairs and brown resin, it will have you feeling like you just struck treasure. When you first break up the buds, it will emit a delectable toffee-like candy aroma. The buds are thick and sticky, coated in resin, as if an actual piece of golden toffee. It has a wonderfully sweet and earthy taste as well without a strange aftertaste. Some even report it to have a honey-like sweetness after!

Upon smoking Acapulco Gold, you can expect to have a unique high, the perfect combination between cerebral and body, for a truly happy and calming experience. It doesn’t produce an extreme euphoria, but rather acts as a mood-booster, and can physically calm and relax the body. It can be great for those with anxiety disorders or those suffering from trauma and seeking some respite. The soothing ability to alleviate physical pain and muscle aches will leave you in an overall state of pure bliss. This is a true treasure of Mexico!

No wonder it was decidedly given the title gold. This is truly the gold standard of cannabis.

#4. Green Crack

Next up we have Green Crack. This energizing strain is pretty much just as its name implies: It’s green and will have you feeling super-energized and alert (much like crack).

But don’t be alarmed, it’s still just cannabis! It’s said to have 2 possible ancestors – either Skunk #1 or an Afghani landrace – and was created in Athens, Georgia way back in the 70s. It’s still, however, just as popular now as it was back then. It has an average THC content of around 16% and is mostly known for its overwhelmingly euphoric properties and ability to bring out some unprecedented creativity.

Green Crack is colored a beautiful greenish yellow, although sometimes a bit of purple may be visible if the leaves were exposed to any cold throughout the growing process. The pistils are a stark rust color and contrast beautifully against the green bud. Green Crack has a lovely earthy and citrus scent. It is known for its silky smooth smoke in the delectable flavor of tropical mango and papaya. It is often noted to have a slightly spicy aftertaste.

Because of its energizing and wirey nature, it is definitely recommended for daytime use. It can keep you buzzed for a while, and it may be quite overwhelming to some. It doesn’t have many medical uses, but one thing it can give you is an amazing psychedelic-like sensation! Distortions of time and vision are common, as well as the ability to have an intense and sharp focus. It can really help you to live in the moment, but those suffering from anxiety or panic should be aware, Green Crack packs quite the punch!

#5. Maui Wowie

Last, but most certainly not least, we present to you Maui Wowie. This strain is originally from the island of Maui, Hawaii, and will without question, be sure to ‘wow’ you. It popped up in the 1960s and quickly became one of the most popular strains due to its awesome flavor and effects.

The Maui Wowie strain looks pretty much like it tastes. With its gold, yellow, and green colors, it much resembles the juicy and tropical pineapple, of which it tastes! It will have you feeling like you’re on the beach of a lush Hawaiian rainforest in no time.

Upon smoking Maui Wowie, you may get a tremendous energy boost, as well as an intense euphoria. You may also start to feel a lightness to your body and numbing sensation. This is perfect for those wishing to feel like they are floating down a lazy river through a Hawaiian paradise. It can melt your tension, ease your pain, and give you that much-needed vacation, without even leaving your house.

With its sweet, tropical fruity goodness and feel-good body high, Maui Wowie should definitely be on your bucket list!

    Where are they now?

Nice read, I haven’t seen Alcupolco Gold since the 70’s, and Maui Wowie since the 80’s. I guess it’s nice too read about strains that you can’t find in the 🇺🇸. NOT!

      Finding old school strains

I found in San Diego a strain that was mixed with Alcupolco Gold and Columbian Red. There are so many strains today I guess you just have to keep looking until you find what you are looking for, and when you do, don’t hesitate to buy it!
