In Japan, mochi is a rice cake made from a japonica glutinous rice known as mochigome. The rice is pounded into a paste, and you can then mold it into any shape of your choosing. Mochi is traditionally eaten during Japanese New Year, and its origins can be traced back thousands of years when it was enjoyed primarily by Japanese emperors and nobles.
Whether the Mochi strain of marijuana is named after the rice cake is open for debate. It is a relatively new hybrid with a high THC level. Over in the UK, it is classified as a luxury strain, alongside Chicken & Waffles and Birthday Cake. It can cost Britons up to $1,000 an ounce! What Is the Mochi Strain?
Mochi weed is a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. It is an indica-dominant hybrid known for its sweet scent and taste, not to mention its potency. The strain occasionally goes by nicknames such as Mochi Gelato and Gelato 47 and is yet another example of the joy brought to weed lovers by the GSC family.
Incidentally, Mochi was created by The Cookiefam, a company consisting of three talented breeders: Sherbinski, Jigga, and Flux. Cookiefam released GSC, and it became one of the most popular strains of all time. No one thought the collective could improve, but by combining the best traits of two wonderful strains, Cookiefam once again created a masterpiece.
When you get high on Mochi, you can expect to experience a feeling of unbridled bliss thanks to the high level of THC and terpenes. While this strain has a significant impact on your body, your mind remains clear enough for you to get things done if necessary.

Aroma
Mochi is incredibly fragrant, and the fruity and sweet smell is a wonderful thing to experience. When you burn this weed, it could be mistaken for an incense candle by someone who doesn’t know marijuana from a hole in the ground. In our introduction, we forgot to mention that there is also a mochi gelato dessert in Japan, and this strain smells just like it.
Flavor
Mochi tastes similarly to how it smells. Whether you are inhaling or exhaling, it will feel like enjoying a fruit cocktail or another tropical dessert. You will find it very hard to put this cannabis down! On the inhale, you get sweet, tangy, and creamy notes. On the exhale, you get hints of peppermint, earth, and lavender.
Appearance
This strain is known for producing a strong purple coloring in patches while the bud is coated with glistening trichomes around harvest time. It is one of the most beautiful marijuana strains you will likely see. One look at a mature Mochi plant, and you know it is a potent strain. Once you break up the resinous nugs, you will find that they fall apart evenly, making them ideal for joint rolling.
Mochi Strain Grow Info
Don’t bother trying to hunt down Mochi seeds. It is a clone-only strain known for being extremely vigorous from the early vegetative stage right through to harvest. It produces large, dense buds and yields far greater than what one would expect from a so-called “boutique” strain.
Sherbinski said he selected Mochi because of its short stature. If you ever have the opportunity to grow Mochi, you won’t have many issues with space because it grows short and squat. The flowering time is 9-10 weeks, and you may be surprised at the thickness of the buds when it is time to harvest.
If you get your hands on Mochi genetics and have outdoor space to work with, you can expect the plants to be ready for harvest by the end of September or the beginning of October. The plants will be short but produce plenty of buds. The diminutive stature of the plants makes them easy to cover if the rainy season comes early.

On average, the THC content of Mochi is around 21%, but we have heard of cuts with a measured THC level of up to 29%.

Mochi is a popular medical strain. Its potency means you can use it to combat chronic pain, a symptom of conditions such as fibromyalgia. It could also prove useful if you have insomnia, depression, stress, anxiety, or fatigue. While you can use it in moderation during the day, you can get a good night’s sleep by using a larger dose in the late evening.
Possible Side Effects of the Mochi Strain
As is always the case with extremely strong marijuana strains, Mochi could cause dizziness, headaches, and dry eyes. Don’t use a large amount during the day if you’re still at work. Once the initial creative spark wears off, your body will become very heavy indeed.

Those who believed that Girl Scout Cookies would be the pinnacle of Cookiefam’s career were sorely mistaken. Mochi is one of the best strains produced in the last few years. As well as being an extremely potent strain, it is one of the best-looking marijuana plants around, not to mention the exceptional taste and smell.
Mochi is not the ideal strain for a novice grower because it takes plenty of maintenance, and clones are not easy to come by. Rather than stressing out over the fact you can’t grow it, hunt down some Mochi at your local dispensary (mainly available in California and Oregon), sit back, and enjoy the rarest of treats.
