“You could say that I am conservative, some might even call me paranoid but having a medical card has kept me out of trouble more than once.” – Amy Johnson
My name is Amy Johnson. I am a mother of 3 and I have a good job, working as a personal assistant. It could always be better, but it pays the bills. Due to my hectic lifestyle, I don’t manage to get out much, and therefore I take comfort in life’s small pleasures, for instance, weed. I am sure that most of you would agree; there is nothing like kicking back after a long day and chilling with a joint. It’s the best anxiety pill!
I’ve always been fond of weed and smoked pot from time to time, but a couple of years back marijuana became an integral part of my life. I was officially diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I personally think it was the fast paced rat race I had been living that brought it on, but who knows. All I know now is that after taking dozens of different pills and hundreds of hours of therapy, the only thing that managed to keep me balanced was Mary Jane.
I used to spend hundreds of Dollars on bull-shit therapy, that a few puffs of weed seemed to fix. Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I think that therapy is a complete waste of time, I am just saying that it didn’t work for me. Maybe I just didn’t find the right doctor.
Living in Cali, the process was simple. At least that’s what I thought. I used to drive by my local dispensary once a week, pick up some strains and head home. From time to time, I like using CBD oil so I make sure that I always have a bottle in stock. Sound easy right? Well, it should be.
The problem is that one day, I found out, that I was breaking local state laws. While California had been re-classed as a recreational state, those actual laws had not been placed into effect. You see Federal laws completely contradict state laws and state laws are often so complex that you need a lawyers degree to fully understand them.
By the way, I found this out after a local cop pulled me aside for a routine check, spotted the weed and let me off with a warning. Thankfully, our sons learned at the same school, so having weed in the front of my car didn’t escalate into anything serious.

So who was wrong? Me or the cop?
Well after looking into local laws, I found out that while Cali is a recreational state, those new laws will only come into effect at the earliest throughout 2018. This means that current laws are still enforced. In 1996, the state introduced prop 215, The Compassionate Use Act, which allows doctors to issue medical marijuana recommendations and this doctors document allows you to walk into a dispensary and purchase weed legally.
Will it protect you on a Federal level? Apparently not, as marijuana is currently classed as a Schedule 1 drug. But it will give you some sense of security.
Now here comes the good part. I thought that by having a medical card would list me on some government list. Thankfully, in Cali, it doesn’t work like that. Thanks to Prop 215, medical marijuana doctors can issue MMJ cards and still maintain complete patient confidentiality. Furthermore, the minute I showed my local dispensary my medical card, I started to get discounts on different strains – WTF. Apparently, the dispensary gets tax benefits on medical patients, and therefore they could provide me with a great discount. I think I covered the cost of the card after three purchases.
Where’s the catch?
Ok, here are a few things that you need to know. First of all, it costs money to get a medical card. It is not a fortune, but everyone to his/her own pocket. I paid $39 for mine, and it is valid for a year. The second thing is that it may cause problems if you want to purchase a fire arm. Federal laws state that you cannot be a fire arms owner and smoke pot at the same time. Sounds crazy, but that’s the law. For me, the gun thing isn’t an issue as I have no need for one. I am actually afraid of them, let alone imagine holding one. Just remember that if you are purchasing a gun then the seller might ask you if you are a medical marijuana patient. It is up to you if you want to tell the truth or not.
How My Medical Marijuana Card Saved Me?
This is already the third year I’ve renewed my medical marijuana card. During my second year, I was again stopped by the local law. Apparently, my tail light wasn’t working properly. I remember it as if it was yesterday.
This time the cop wasn’t as pleasant. He was actually an arrogant SOB. He spotted the weed in my bag and became extremely aggressive, asking me tons of questions. I looked at him as if; “Do I seriously look like a drug dealer?”. I immediately got out my medical card, and he answered in a frustrated tone; “Get your light fixed and please do not transport weed.”.
“What am I supposed to do, magically teleport it from the dispensary to my home!?!?”
My thoughts about Medical Marijuana Cards?
I’m not one to judge. For some $39 a year is a lot of money. Other people I know get their stash from their local shady dealer, so I believe that a medical card wouldn’t really interest them. I personally don’t understand how they even smoke that stuff. But if you are looking to purchase quality weed and want to feel a certain level of security then don’t let it hold you back. And for those of you who are tech-savy, you can do it online. It took me 30 minutes.
