Facts about cannabis

CBD is widely becoming well known as an effective medicine that is potentially able to treat a huge number of medical conditions.

Though its reputation was initially marred by its association with THC and marijuana in general, CBD is now considered to be just another medicine you can take to help treat your ailments. Thanks to its possible ability to help treat innumerable conditions, from anorexia and anxiety to dermatitis and psoriasis, CBD is swiftly becoming known as just another ingredient on your pharmacist’s shelf.

However, there are still a huge amount of incredibly interesting things about CBD that most people have yet to learn. Despite its apparent public perception, too few people actually know very much about CBD at all.

Here are 5 mind-blowing facts that you absolutely need to know about CBD.

Fact #1: CBD Can Actually Help Other Medications

CBD is not only a natural substance with a potential wide variety of medical applications, but it can actually interact with other medications for the better, improving the efficacy of both CBD and the pharmaceutical as well.

In a study conducted by Emilio Perucca for the Journal of Epilepsy Research, Perucca discovered this crossover with a drug called Clobazam. By studying numerous epilepsy patients who were being treated with CBD, he discovered that their conditions were massively improved when patients were taking both Clobazam and CBD at the same time.

Clobazam is a common anti-seizure medication, designed to help control the symptoms of epilepsy that cause the most injury – the seizures. Perucca couldn’t figure out whether it was the reaction CBD had with Clobazam, or whether it was CBD itself having the remarkable effect. CBD is widely used to help treat epilepsy, as is Clobazam, but the combined effect of the two drugs was far and away the most beneficial treatment.

This was further studied and concluded in a study by Geffrey et al., which elaborated on the mechanics of how CBD and Clobazam work well together. It turns out that they are metabolized in the same cytochrome P450 pathway, causing a combined, multiplicative effect on the drugs’ ability to combat seizures.

Thanks to these studies, patients are able to combine conventional medication with CBD oil to help combat their dangerous seizures with far more effectiveness than ever before. So, not only is CBD excellent at helping treat medical conditions, but it can actually help other medications to combat those conditions as well.

This is really useful, especially because…

Fact #2: CBD is Safe to Give to Your Pets!

As strange as it might seem, you can actually give CBD to your pets!

Though the idea of giving something that comes from marijuana to your dog might seem insane, it is in fact perfectly safe to give your animal friends CBD.

The reason for this is that every mammal possesses an endocannabinoid system, allowing cannabinoids like CBD and THC to affect them. This is actually the very same reason why you cannot give your pets straight marijuana or a THC extract – it’ll actually get them high!

Unfortunately, the dosage required to get a dog high from THC is so insanely low that it is likely that any marijuana your dog gets access to will make them extremely sick. If you’ve ever seen someone smoke way too much marijuana, you’ll understand the effects: Paranoia, disorientation, and general confusion.

CBD, thanks to not being psychoactive whatsoever, is perfectly safe for your mammalian pets and can help them in the exact same way that CBD helps humans, using the exact same bodily processes.
By encouraging the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body through indirect stimulation, CBD can help pets overcome a myriad of illnesses and issues.

One of the most common uses for CBD for Dogs is for a reduction in anxiety. CBD has been demonstrated in numerous studies, such as a study by Crippa et al., which found that when dosed with CBD, animals exhibited a reduction in stress and anxiety symptoms, generally calming them down and preventing elevated stress levels or increased heart rate.

This is especially important for the kind of people that like to rehome rescue animals – anxiety is a common symptom when moving an animal into a new home, so being able to dose them with something harmless and helpful like CBD could be a huge benefit.

For example, by administering CBD to particularly anxious rescue dogs, you might be able to help them become adopted more frequently and fit it into their new life with a lot more ease.

While we know how amazing CBD is as a medicine, it also serves a few other useful features, like…

CBD GUMMIES

Fact #3: CBD Counteracts THC

Within the cannabis plant, THC and CBD exist together within the plant walls. THC outnumbers CBD by about 10 to 1, meaning that you get a lot more THC than you do CBD in any regular cannabis plant.
Cannabis plants evolved THC to serve as both an antimicrobial and an insect deterrent to stop herbivores from destroying the plant. However, why did the plant evolve CBD?

It turns out that CBD exists to help counter some of the effects of THC, balancing out their effects when ingested. This encourages mammals to ingest and spread the plant, rather than mammals like us destroying it as a dangerous pest.

In a study by Britta Hahn, researchers discovered that CBD works to help suppress THC’s tendency to encourage psychosis among heavy users.

Most people have heard the frequently touted claim that marijuana makes you paranoid and psychotic. While not entirely true, THC does have the unfortunate ability to make you develop psychosis easier than you would otherwise if it is excessively used. CBD, through processes we’re not entirely sure of, helps to counteract this increased risk of psychosis.

This is actually a burgeoning issue within the marijuana community, as growers are constantly trying to breed their plants to have the highest quantity of THC possible. This often results in a reduced amount of CBD than would otherwise be found normally within the cannabis plant, which of course is not necessarily good news.

Thankfully, you can buy pure CBD oils extracted from cannabis plants to ensure you have the necessary amount of CBD to counteract THC’s negative effects, or even just to medicate using just CBD, but it’s still amazing that CBD works perfectly with THC to help make you safe and healthy.

Fact #4: CBD Doesn’t Technically Stimulate the Endocannabinoid System

This one is a bit of a technicality, but is still incredibly interesting.

Among those aware of CBD, the process by which CBD interacts with your body is well known. After ingesting CBD, it is absorbed into your bloodstream, where it can travel around the body and stimulate the CB1 and CB2 receptors within the endocannabinoid system. These receptors then create the array of potential medicinal effects that help your body treat itself.

However… this isn’t technically true. CBD is actually quite special in that, when interacting with the endocannabinoid system, it doesn’t specifically bind to the receptors, like THC. Instead, it encourages the endocannabinoid system to naturally trigger the CB1 and CB2 receptors itself using endocannabinoids (which we produce ourselves), allowing your body to begin its healing process.

This is an important distinction, because THC works in the opposite way. When you imbibe THC – the psychoactive component of marijuana – it binds to the cannabinoid receptors, encouraging their stimulation to an extremely high level. This is actually causes the well known psychoactive high, as when THC binds itself to the CB1 receptors located in the brain, you become over-stimulated and feel the effects of the marijuana.

The fact that CBD doesn’t bind itself to the receptors is the very reason why it doesn’t have a psychoactive effect.

You might consider it a niggling distinction, as CBD still does trigger the receptors, only indirectly. However, it’s a great example of how amazing the human body is and how it can work in so many ways, as well as providing an insight into how CBD affects you.

Fact #5: CBD Makes You Feel Better, But Not High

This is the most important aspect of CBD, one that is far too commonly misunderstood by the general public.

CBD and THC are both from the cannabis plant and, quite famously, THC gets you high. Everyone knows that, it’s extremely obvious. However, CBD does not get you high.

This might be well known to experienced cannabis smokers, but it’s important that everyone else understands this is as well.

CBD is completely non-psychoactive and non-hallucinogenic, meaning that it is physically impossible for it to get you high. There has never been a reported instance of anyone getting high – or addicted, for that matter – to CBD, nor has there ever been a case of anyone suffering an overdose on the substance.

Though this might be obvious, this one single fact is the most important of them all, because it is the most useful thing for the general public to know.

The more people realize that CBD is harmless and is quite possibly medically beneficial, the faster understanding and legalization will take place across the world.

CBD is mind blowing in what it can do for people with illnesses and problems, so the sooner the world realizes it and starts using it more, the better.
