Much like integrative medicine, functional medicine is human-focused and heavily science-based. It views our body as one integrated system (rather than a collection of independent organs that are divided up by medical specialties) and seeks to identify and address the root cause of the disease.

- Smoking: This is still a popular choice and can be done through a pipe, cigarette (joint), or water pipe (bong). Smoking cannabis results in an almost immediate effect, but it can wear off quickly. It’s possible that benefits can last for as long as four hours, but it’s also possible that they dissipate in as little as 90 minutes.
- Vaping: A vaporizer allows you to extract the cannabinoids from the cannabis at a much lower temperature than smoking. While this method doesn’t produce immediate effects, some patients find vaping their prescription to be twice as potent.

- Topical application: Some creams, lotions, and balms can be infused with cannabis and applied directly to the affected area. This method has been known to help with arthritis, spasms, muscle soreness, and restless leg syndrome.
- Tincture concentrates: Tinctures have cannabis in an alcohol solution. This method requires careful dosages that should be gradually adjusted until the patient feels the desired effects. Tinctures can be mixed into drinks, but some patients will prefer to take them directly under the tongue.
