In all states, you must show proof via an acceptable form of I.D. that you are a state resident. Accepted forms of identification include an official Driver’s License or a state issued I.D. Card. Also, most states (and the recommending physician’s office) will charge a fee. These are things to bear in mind before you begin the application process.

Each state has its own unique application process. However, it’s worth pointing out that there are similarities in all U.S. states that offer legal medical marijuana programs.

For instance, most offer a reduced-cost application fee if you qualify for SNAP. All states with a valid MMJ program also require you to show acceptable documentation that proves you are a resident of that state.

There are many essential differences from state to state regarding what is – and is not – allowed under the MMJ program. It is crucial to know and understand these specific differences in your area.

Some states allow you to grow cannabis after MMJ approval, for instance. Others have a stringent ‘No Cultivation’ policy. Furthermore, some states allow a Physician’s Assistant (PA) or an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) to make the initial recommendation for medical cannabis.

New Mexico

While Proposition 2 allowed for home cultivation, the altered Medical Cannabis Act in Utah removed the wording. Therefore, it remains illegal to cultivate marijuana in Utah. In 2021, patients who live more than 100 miles from a dispensary may be allowed to grow cannabis.

Vermont

Virginia

Medical Conditions | There are no specific medical conditions that make you automatically eligible for an MMJ card in Virginia. At present, the doctor decides if you have the chance to use it. Purchase & Possession Limits | CBD oil or THC-A oil with a maximum THC content of 10mg. Each dispensed dose must have at least 5mg of CBD or THC-A. Once recreational sales begin, MMJ patients can buy a 90-day supply of marijuana in Virginia. However, there is no standardized measure of how much cannabis this is. It will depend on the patient’s consultation with the physician.

Recreational | Virginia has approved adult-use cannabis. When the law comes into effect in July 2021, adults aged 21+ can purchase and possess up to an ounce of marijuana. It will also be possible to grow a maximum of four plants at home.

Washington

Medical marijuana is hardly a thing anymore in Washington. The recreational weed market is now dominant.

Many medical-only dispensaries have shut down or become recreational sellers instead.

Washington D.C.

Recreational | Although adult-use marijuana is legal in Washington, D.C., it is illegal to purchase it anywhere in the District. However, you are allowed to give up to an ounce to another adult aged 21+ as a ‘gift. Residents can grow a maximum of six plants at home, with no more than three mature plants.

West Virginia
