The fact that the CBD market has grown exponentially in the United Kingdom is probably common knowledge at this point. What many people are unaware of, however, is the size of the health supplement market on the island of Guernsey, one of the British Channel Islands. The market for mail-order vitamins and health supplements emanating from companies on the island was believed to be worth £100 million several years ago!

For decades, Guernsey and the other Channel Islands operated without the same regulatory restrictions on health claims associated with these supplements. Some firms on these islands sent literature to UK residents claiming that their products were good for conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. Finally, the UK Department of Health cracked down and forced compliance with the rest of Britain.

Healthspan is one of the companies that enjoyed phenomenal success during the golden age of the Channel Island health supplement market. The crackdown probably affected a lot of its rivals, but it appears as if Healthspan is still going strong. Today, we specifically look at the brand’s CBD collection.

Who is Healthspan?

Healthspan is not just a CBD seller, which is why it has been around a LOT longer than any cannabidiol-only brand. Derek Coates founded the company in 1996 and began with just six products. He previously worked as a marketer for pharmaceutical firm, Unilever, and back in 2012, he claimed to have sold more pills to UK customers than Boots!

Coates is something of a miracle man himself. When he was just 32 years old, Coates was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. After surviving, he resolved to focus on nutrition and created his brand almost a quarter of a century ago. Coates doesn’t pretend to be an expert, but he is a strong advocate of health supplements.

When it was still permissible for companies on the Channel Islands to make health claims about their products, Coates enlisted the help of medical professionals to write on his brand’s catalogues; immediately imbuing them with a modicum of credibility.

According to the company’s About Us page, Healthspan was one of the first to ensure all its products were produced to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. Over the years, the firm has received plaudits within its industry. For example, it was praised as producing the most refined cod liver oil by independent adjudicators and developed the first allergen-free glucosamine.

Given the brand’s reputation and eagerness to stay ahead of the curve, it was always going to get involved in the CBD boom and has created a trio of products.

Review of Healthspan Super Strength CBD Oil Drops

All of the brand’s CBD products use cannabidiol derived from industrial hemp. The oil is extracted from EU hemp using CO2 extraction, and the firm removes unwanted plant matter, including chlorophyll, waxes, and lipids. The result is a high-quality, golden-colored liquid which is decarboxylated to ensure it contains high levels of CBD.

The brand also provides proof of third-party lab testing. For example, the high strength drops contain 2.84% CBD against less than 0.05% THC. Oddly enough, the report doesn’t specify the lab that performed the testing, but the tests are conducted in accordance with GMP guidelines.

Whatever you may think of Guernsey’s old policy of allowing dubious medical claims on health supplements, there seems little doubt that Healthspan has moved on and is a truly legitimate enterprise. The brand is a member of the UK’s Cannabis Trades Association (CTA). This is an important accreditation because CTA members must meet extremely high standards.

These Super Strength CBD Oil Drops are the most potent CBD product available at Healthspan currently. Each 10ml bottle contains 480mg of CBD in a formulation that is 5% CBD oil. It costs £25.95 for a bottle; which is a special price because it usually costs £28.95. With all three products, you have the option of subscribing monthly and having the CBD sent to your home automatically.

Healthspan recommends using 1-7 drops up to three times a day, and the product comes with a convenient dropper. As per usual, place the drops beneath your tongue and hold for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. You should not use more than 21 drops each day. The oil comes with a pleasant peppermint taste, and each drop contains 1.365mg of CBD and 27.3mg of hemp.

Those who have used the oil say it is effective in relatively small doses. On a mg per pound basis, it could be deemed expensive, so if you need a higher dosage of say, 50mg of CBD per day, you’ll go through three bottles in a month.

Review of Healthspan High Strength CBD Oil

If you plan to use CBD to deal with a busy lifestyle or simply to enjoy a sense of wellbeing, you may prefer to opt for the slightly less potent high strength CBD oil which has a concentration of 2.75%. The CBD is extracted in the same manner as in the super-strength oil, and each 10ml bottle contains 250mg of CBD for £13.95, down from £15.95.

It is a good option if you are trying CBD for the first time and don’t want to spend a small fortune on it. This oil has the same peppermint flavor as the super-strength option, and each drop contains 0.75mg of CBD and 27.3mg of hemp. Healthspan recommends using 1-8 drops three times a day, with a max usage of 25 drops per day.

Reviews for this oil are generally positive, although there is a concern about the relative lack of strength. You need to consume 20 drops to get 15mg of CBD a day, for example. Incidentally, both CBD oil options are vegan-friendly.

In this instance, you have the option of a 30-capsule bottle for £13.95 or a 60-capsule bottle for £26.95. Each capsule contains 6.4mg of CBD and 160mg of hemp, which is undoubtedly low by United States standards, but then again, UK products tend to be less potent than their American counterparts.

The capsules are ideal for individuals who want CBD but don’t like the taste of the oil. Take 1-3 capsules each day with water. For best results, take them as you would prescription medication. That is, use one every few hours rather than a couple of capsules at the same time. The capsules include olive oil to help absorption in the body.

Once again, this product has received reasonable reviews. However, given the low bioavailability from orally consumed CBD products, it is questionable whether a capsule containing just 6.4mg of CBD is capable of having a major impact on chronic pain, for example.

Where Can I Buy Healthspan CBD Products?

Make your way to the official Healthspan website and go to the ‘Vitamins and Supplements’ tab. On the drop-down menu, choose ‘Cannabis Oil CBD.’ From there, you can browse the three available CBD products.

As Healthspan sells a myriad of products, you are bound to the brand’s general terms and conditions. At present, the brand does not ship to the United States and Canada. It offers a ‘no quibble’ refund if you are not satisfied with your purchase. If you are satisfied with Royal Mail 2nd Class Delivery, it is free and takes 3-4 working days.

First Class Delivery within the UK costs £1.95 and takes 1-2 working days. While it doesn’t send its products to North America at present, it does sell to customers in dozens of countries around the world.

Final Thoughts on Healthspan’s CBD Products

As a brand, Healthspan is well-respected in the United Kingdom and beyond. There is no question that it sells high-quality CBD derived from industrial hemp as claimed. Derek Coates has grown his enterprise into a behemoth and continues to make millions each year.

However, there are some concerns over the relative lack of strength of the products. While the products are ideal if you only need a small dose of say 10-20mg per day, they may prove a little costly if you need a higher dose. Even so, Healthspan’s CBD products remain one of the better options in the UK landscape.
