With the interest and buzz around CBD oil growing across the globe, it is no real surprise that the State of Pennsylvania has decided to sign off on their own medical marijuana program, making them the 24th state to do so!! Over the past few years we have seen a huge rise in the number of states and countries that have altered their opinions when it comes to the benefits of legalizing CBD, and after working on the program since April 2016 at the back end of 2017 Pennsylvania opened their patient application programme!
The Patient application programme, also known as Act 16 offers protection to registered patients and their physicians from any penalties relating to the distribution or use of medical marijuana. It also offers a more structured and regulated system for patients using marijuana as a medical treatment.
While they may not have been the first state to legalize CBD for medical use, they have been quick to get the ball rolling having already approved over 50 licensed dispensaries, which will be ready in the upcoming months! This is fantastic news for long-suffering residents of Pennsylvania who have been struggling with debilitating medical conditions and relying solely on hit-and-miss prescription medication!

What Exactly is CBD Oil?
CBD is one of the main cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant, and it has spent many years overshadowed by THC which is what delivers the famous “High” associated with the Marijuana plant. Unlike THC however, CBD is almost entirely non-psychoactive meaning it does not alter the state of mind of the user. CBD is extracted using different processes, such as the famous CO2 extraction process and the rich CBD goodness can be extracted from each of the Cannabis Sativa L plant; Cannabis or Hemp.
The CBD oil industry has skyrocketed in recent years due to the vast amount of health benefits that have been linked to its use. While many remain skeptical about the abilities of CBD oil and often fail to separate it from the behavior-altering high that results from using THC, it is definitely at the forefront of discussion all around the world.
CBD oil affects the body by attaching itself to the built-in receptors that are already present within us. Known as CB1 and CB2 these receptors control different aspects of our bodies, while CB1 involves out the brain and affects things such as emotions, pain, movement and coordination, CB2 is our immune system so involves things such as inflammation and pain. THC attaches itself to CB1, which is what leads to the “high” effect, while CBD rather than attaching itself to either receptor instead promotes the natural growth of cannabinoids within our body.
Naturally, the body creates its own cannabinoids, but by using CBD which influences the body to increase development of naturally produced cannabinoids, you are effectively increasing the bodies defenses which leads to a range of health benefits with limited recorded side effects!
Can CBD Oil help with medical conditions?
CBD oil has been proven to improve a wide variety of major medical conditions ranging from mental health to physical health issues! Conditions such as some of the ones listed below are just a few of the impressive health benefits that have come to light regarding the use of CBD oil.
CBD for Epilepsy
Being one of the most prevalent medical conditions with statistics showing that around 5 people in every 100 will have an epileptic seizure at some time throughout their lives, and around four of these will eventually develop epilepsy themselves it is clear that so far there has been little to no progress with finding a cure!
Whilst CBD oil has never been proven to cure epilepsy, studies using animals have shown that using CBD can dramatically affect seizures. In a separate clinical trial done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a specific dosage of Epidolex was found to reduce the number of seizures had by a massive 50% during just a 12-week period! While there were some mild side effects such as sleepiness, diarrhea and decreased appetite, the results massively outweighed the cons here!
CBD for Anxiety Disorders
One of the most well-known benefits that come with using CBD oil is the dramatic improvement it can make for your mental health. Studies have shown that using CBD can help with a wide range of anxiety disorders from PTSD and OCD to generalized anxiety and social anxiety!
Anxiety is one of the most common forms of mental illness across the US, with statistics showing that around 10% of teens and a massive 40% of adults suffer from some kind of anxiety. So it is no surprise that the popularity of CBD for Anxiety Disorders has shown up so much with the marked improvement it makes on mental health!
A study done by the NCBI showed that the use of CBD reduced the response of the part of our brain that expresses fear.
CBD for Depression
Being one of the most common mental health disorders, depression can affect an individual’s mood, attitude, thoughts and behavior in a massive way! CBD has been linked with the treatment of depression more and more over recent years, and in 2016 a study revealed that CBD could dramatically reduce the inability to feel the enjoyment of pleasure, otherwise known as anhedonia within the individual.

In 2017, a Pharmacology study revealed that CBD could not only reduce the way we feel pain but also the emotional impact pain has on our mental health!
CBD has been used to treat a wide range of pain from osteoporosis to cancer-related pains!

CBD for Schizophrenia
There is a slight running theme here in that CBD oil has been proven to help so many mental illnesses, from anxiety to schizophrenia; CBD can really improve on a grand spectrum of issues!
In 2013, a study done by the NCBI showed that the antipsychotic-like properties of CBD are not too dissimilar to atypical antipsychotics in that it can help with both hallucinations as well as things like lack of emotion or social functioning.
Whilst THC is often suggested to cause psychotic symptoms; it is becoming more and more common to see the use of CBD in helping these symptoms.
Final Thoughts About the Current Situation of CBD in Pennsylvania
It is difficult to pick many arguments against the ever-growing list of benefits that CBD oil brings to the table. Looking at a range of scientific studies, coupled with endless positive and sometimes even life-changing reviews left by thousands of CBD oil users who claim that this natural chemical has changed their lives; it is hard to find my faults here.
We must stress, however, that whilst the list is short CBD does come with some side effects and the research into these is ongoing. In addition CBD does come in a variety of formats and potency levels. And therefore while some oils may work for your medical condition, others may not. What we can safely say, however, is that up to now there have been no major side-effects reported whilst most prescription and over the counter medication comes with a list as long as your arm of potential side effects.
Pennsylvania having jumped on the legalization bandwagon comes as no real surprise once you weigh up the constant growth in popularity of the CBD industry and we suspect many more states will follow suit in the future!
