With the use of cannabis – and more specifically CBD oil – becoming increasingly popular for its medicinal properties all over the country, the Governor of Oklahoma signed a bill in 2015 that made the use of CBD oil legal (with a physician’s recommendation) for minors suffering from severe epilepsy disorders.
In 2016, the state approved a new bill which legalized CBD oil for patients of all ages (again with a physician recommendation), and added several new qualifying conditions – including multiple sclerosis, intractable nausea and vomiting, appetite stimulation, and chronic wasting diseases.
As of 2018, there are eight states in which cannabis is entirely legal for both recreational and medicinal use, and a further 22 states where CBD is legal with a prescription for medicinal use. Although the use of CBD is legal in these states, the exact laws can differ wildly.
Currently, there is no specific law in Oklahoma stating that hemp CBD oil (i.e. CBD oil that contains less than 0.3% THC) is legal for non-medically qualifying patients. Rather, it is one of the states that simply chooses to “tolerate” the sale, possession, and use of the compound, on account that it is safe and does not produce any mind-altering effects.
Moreover, Oklahoma very recently (as of summer 2018) passed a medical marijuana program that will allow patients to purchase and use cannabis CBD oil from licensed dispensaries. While both products typically have the same therapeutic effects, cannabis CBD oil is generally more potent than CBD oil from hemp, and contains higher amounts of THC in addition to the CBD.
However, it is unlikely that the medical marijuana program will be up and running any time soon. By conservative estimates, it will likely be mid-2019 at the earliest before approved patients are able to actually purchase marijuana products from operating dispensaries.
Until then, residents of the state wondering how to buy CBD oil in Oklahoma are advised that there are dozens of options for acquiring safe, well-made, high quality (and most importantly legal) products. Later in the article we will answer the question of ‘where to buy CBD oil in Oklahoma,’ but first, let’s take a look at what CBD oil actually is for those who are still in the dark.
Understanding the Basics; What exactly is CBD Oil?
Ultimately, cannabidiol (CBD) is the active marijuana compound that doesn’t get you high. The first thing to know about CBD is that it’s non-psychoactive, meaning that it won’t make you stoned. The primary psychoactive ingredient found in weed is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but this is only one of the chemical compounds – known as cannabinoids – that are produced by the marijuana plant.
In fact, CBD is one of over 80 cannabinoids that can be found in both hemp and marijuana. Naturally, hemp has higher traces of CBD, and therefore CBD makes up a good portion of hemp plant genetics. It can be extracted in high amounts from the stem, leaves, and flower of either the cannabis or the hemp plant. The flower is the most valuable for a rich, dense, and balanced CBD oil.
From a medical perspective, CBD is an extremely promising compound. Many people believe that it helps them relax, and some users believe that taking regular doses can help fight off symptoms stemming from neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Moreover, many studies have shown that CBD has anti–pain, anti–inflammatory, and antipsychotic properties. However, there has only been minimal testing in human clinical trials, and more are certainly needed before the compound can gain any kind of FDA-approval.
CBD is commonly used by patients in the form of an oil. This is, of course, CBD oil. The CBD oil industry has taken off over the last few years as a result of the vast number of health benefits that have been linked to the product. To say that there is hype surrounding CBD at the moment is no exaggeration – you can sprinkle a few drops in your smoothie, vape it, or put it under your tongue.
CBD oil interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS is known to regulate the body’s normal homeostasis or general state of balance. Among other things, this is what maintains pain response, appetite, a healthy mood, and even your sleeping habit.
CBD oil works by interacting with a network of built-in receptors that are naturally produced in our body. These are known as the CB1 and CB2 receptors, and they are responsible for controlling various aspects of our health. CB1 receptors work mostly in our brain and affect things like emotions, movement, and coordination, while CB2 receptors work more in our immune system to influence things like inflammation and pain.
THC attaches itself to the CB1 receptors in the brain, which is what causes the high. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t attach itself to either of these receptors but instead promotes the natural growth of cannabinoids within our body.
The body naturally creates its own cannabinoids, but using CBD increases the body’s defenses which is what is believed to lead to the various health benefits with limited side effects. Some very legitimate studies have been done to back up most of the claims about CBD oil.
Can CBD Oil help with Different Medical Conditions?
Awareness of CBD oil in Oklahoma has grown tremendously as the state has unofficially eased restrictions on the substance over the past few years. Both children and adults are using it to treat a variety of conditions, including, PTSD, chronic pain, anxiety, and seizures, among other things.
CBD for seizures
Approximately 30% of Americans who are diagnosed with epilepsy don’t respond to traditional medication. Also, many of these medications come with a host of unwanted side effects.
Multiple studies have shown that CBD oil is incredibly useful in alleviating the symptoms of epilepsy and getting seizures under control; not only with regards to intensity but also frequency. In fact, in June of 2018 Epidiolex (a pediatric epilepsy drug) became the first FDA-approved medicine with natural CBD extract as the active ingredient.
Moreover, in 2013 reports emerged confirming that CBD had significantly reduced the number of seizures experienced by a 6-year old girl named Charlotte Figi, who suffered from Dravet’s syndrome. She had been suffering from over 300 seizures a week, but CBD oil reduced her episodes to just a few a month. By all accounts, existing seizure medications fail about a third of all suffers as the drugs either don’t stop the seizures, or the side effects are too severe.
CBD for pain relief
Believe it or not, cannabis extracts have been used for thousands of years to treat various types of pain. However, it has only recently begun to be studied again by the medical community. Research has shown that CBD oil has incredible anti-inflammatory properties that can ease the symptoms of chronic pain, including severe neck pain, back pain, joint pain, and widespread nerve pain.
A study published in the European Journal of Pain used an animal model to test if CBD could help people with arthritis to manage their pain. As part of the study, CBD infused topical gel was applied to rats for four days. The research recorded a significant drop in both inflammation and pain, with no additional side effects.
Of course, arthritis-related pain isn’t the only variety that CBD oil has been shown to treat; it has also proven effective for treating pain associated with HIV and cancer treatments, multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms, and more.
CBD for Anxiety disorders
Over 18% of the American population aged 18 and over are thought to be affected by an anxiety-related disorder. One of the most well-known benefits of CBD is, in fact, the improvement that it can have on one’s mental health.
Numerous animal studies and accumulating evidence from human studies suggest that CBD has powerful anti-anxiety properties. Research has shown that CBD can help to treat several anxiety disorders, including PTSD, panic disorder, OCD, social anxiety, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder.
Brazilian researchers did a small double-blind study on patients who suffered from social anxiety, and after consuming CBD, the subjects reported a significant reduction in their symptoms. The reports were validated by performing brain scans which showed cerebral blood flow patterns consistent with anti-anxiety effects.
CBD for nausea and vomiting
According to recent research, CBD can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting. These studies have shown that CBD is capable of supporting the natural cannabinoid enzyme known as anandamide. Preliminary studies show that the compound activates 5-HT1A, which is a monoamine neurotransmitter that is known to reduce the nausea sensation once activated.
Additionally, a study compiled by the British Pharmacological Society reported that the manipulation of the endocannabinoid system regulates not only nausea, but also vomiting in both humans and animals.
CBD for schizophrenia
As we have already mentioned, CBD oil can function as a treatment for a variety of mental health conditions, from anxiety to schizophrenia. A study that was published in 2011 by schizophrenia researchers found that high doses of CBD led to a fewer number of psychotic episodes in patients suffering from full-blown schizophrenia.
Moreover, in 2015 two scientists published a systematic review of all CBD studies that related to schizophrenia and psychosis. They concluded that although larger randomized clinical trials are needed, preliminary studies show CBD to be a safe, effective, and well-tolerated antipsychotic compound. It was determined that CBD is not too dissimilar from other antipsychotics, in that it could help with hallucinations as well as things like emotional imbalance and lack of social functioning.
Final Thoughts on CBD Oil in Oklahoma
There is no denying that CBD oil can provide incredible medical benefits that every person deserves to have access to. Looking at the multiple studies that have been conducted, all of which have delivered positive results, it’s hard for many of us to understand why CBD has not been legalized everywhere.
It is important to mention, however, that CBD does come with some potential side effects, and therefore it is recommended to consult with a physician before consuming any CBD-based products. Compared to the side effects of many pharmaceutical drugs, however, these side effects (which include dry mouth and dizziness) are minor.
Also, keep in mind that CBD is available in different forms and various levels of potency. For this reason, while some CBD oils may work to treat your specific medical conditions, others may experience little or no effects at all.
For now, while lawmakers continue to work out the details of the state’s burgeoning medical marijuana program, it is comforting to know that CBD oil in Oklahoma is widely available to those who need it most.
