CBD Oil in Oklahoma

With the use of cannabis and more specifically CBD becoming increasingly popular for its medicinal properties all over the world, the Governor of Oklahoma signed a bill in 2015 that made the use of CBD oil legal for minors suffering from severe epilepsy disorders. In 2016, the state approved a new bill which legalized CBD oil for patients of all ages and added several new qualifying conditions to the bill.

As of 2018, there are eight states in which cannabis is entirely legal for both recreational and medicinal use and a further 38 states where CBD is legal with a prescription for medicinal usage. Although the use of CBD is legal in these states, the law differs from state to state. 17 of these states have specific legislation for the THC-levels present in the oil and the conditions that it can be used to treat. Oklahoma is one of these states.

The law in Oklahoma states that the THC-levels in the CBD, should not exceed 0.3%. This is to prevent the user from experiencing any sort of “high.” Among the most common conditions that CBD oil can be used to treat are spasticity due to paraplegia or multiple sclerosis, appetite stimulation with chronic wasting diseases, intractable nausea and vomiting, and, course, seizures.

Katie’s law first legalized CBD oil in 2015, as a way to allow children with seizures to take it. Since then, with the subsequent expansions of the law that were implemented in 2016, CBD oil was shown to be very useful in treating numerous people with numerous conditions throughout the state. The House Bill 1559 which was passed in 2016, made it clear that Oklahoma saw CBD as independent of the criminalized marijuana plant. This was the first big step towards CBD becoming popular in retail stores across the state.

As of the start of 2018, Senate Bill 794 which would establish Oklahoma’s own research and growing program, is under review. This is part of the 2014 Farm Bill which legalized the cultivation and research of industrial hemp. Even cannabis legislation is up for review now in this state. Through State Question 788, Oklahoma residents will be given a chance to vote this year to allow for the use of medical marijuana.

Understanding the Basics; What exactly is CBD Oil?

Ultimately, Cannabidiol (CBD) is the marijuana compound that doesn’t get your high. The first thing to know about CBD is that it’s non-psychoactive, meaning that it won’t make you stoned. The primary psychoactive ingredient found in weed is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But this is only one of the chemical compounds – known as cannabinoids – that is produced by the marijuana plant.

CBD is one of over 80 cannabinoids that can be found in the marijuana plant. It can be found in hemp and marijuana. Naturally, hemp has higher traces of CBD, and therefore CBD makes up a good portion of the hemp genetics. It can be extracted from the stem, leaves, and flower of the cannabis or hemp plant. The flower is the most valuable for a rich, dense, and balanced CBD oil.

From a medical perspective, CBD is the most promising compound. Many people believe that it helps them to relax, and some users believe that taking regular doses helps to fight off Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Many studies have shown that CBD has anti-pain, anti-inflammatory, and antipsychotic properties. However, there has only been minimal testing in human clinical trials, where scientific research shows what a drug does, its side effects, how much patients should take, etc.

CBD is commonly used by patients in the form of an oil. This is, of course, CBD oil. The CBD oil industry has taken off over the last few years, because of the vast number of health benefits that have been linked to the product. To say that there is hype surrounding CBD at the moment is no exaggeration. You can sprinkle a few drops in your smoothie, vape it, or put it under your tongue.

CBD oil interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS regulates the body’s normal homeostasis or general state of balance. This is what maintains pain response, appetite, a healthy mood, and your sleeping habit. CBD oil works by attaching itself to built-in receptors that are already in our body. These are known as the CB1 and CB2 and are responsible for controlling different aspects of our body. The CB1 receptors work in our brain and affect things like emotions, movement, pain, and coordination, while the CB2 receptor works in our immune system and affects things like inflammation and pain. THC attaches itself to the CB1 receptor which is what causes the high. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t attach itself to either of the receptors and instead promotes the natural growth of cannabinoids within our body.

The body naturally creates its own cannabinoids, but using CBD increases the body’s defenses which is what leads to various health benefits with limited side effects. Some very legit studies that have been done to back up some of the claims about CBD oil.

Can CBD Oil help with medical conditions?

Awareness of CBD oil in Oklahoma has grown tremendously as the state has eased restrictions on the substance over the past few years. Both children and adults are using it to treat a variety of conditions, including, PTSD, chronic pain, anxiety, and seizures, among other things.

CBD for seizures

Approximately of 30% Americans who are diagnosed with epilepsy don’t respond to traditional medication. Also, this medication often comes with unwanted side effects. Multiple studies have proven that CBD oil is incredibly useful in alleviating the symptoms of epilepsy and getting seizures under control; not only with regards to intensity but also frequency.

In 2013 reports emerged confirming that CBD had significantly reduced the number of seizures experienced by a 6-year old girl named Charlotte Figi, who suffered from Dravet syndrome. She had been suffering from over 300 seizures a week, but CBD oil reduced her episodes to just a few a month. By all accounts, existing seizure medication fails about a third of all suffers, because either the drugs don’t stop the seizures or the side effects are too severe.

CBD for pain relief

Believe it or not, CBD has been used for thousands of years to treat various types of pain. However, it has only recently begun to be studied again by the medical community. Research has shown that CBD oil has incredible anti-inflammatory properties that can work miracles for chronic pain. Whether you have pain in your neck, back, hands, or feet, CBD oil could help.

A study published in the European Journal of Pain* used an animal model to test if CBD could help people with arthritis to manage their pain. As part of the study, CBD infused topical gel was applied to rats for four days. The research recorded a significant drop in inflammation and pain, without any additional side effects. But arthritis-related pain isn’t the only one that CBD oil can treat. It is also useful for treating pain associated with cancer patients, and multiple sclerosis (MS), among other conditions.

CBD for Anxiety disorders

Over 18% of the American population age 18 and over, are thought to be affected by anxiety-related disorders. One of most well-known benefits of CBD is, in fact, the phenomenal improvement that it can have on one’s mental health. Numerous animal studies and accumulating evidence from human studies suggest that CBD has powerful anti-anxiety properties. Research has shown that CBD can help to treat several anxiety disorders like PTSD, panic disorder, OCD, social anxiety, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder.

Brazilian researchers did a small double-blind study* on patients who suffer from social anxiety. After consuming CBD, patients reported a significant reduction in anxiety. The reports were validated by performing brain scans that showed cerebral blood flow patterns that were consistent with an anti-anxiety effect.

CBD for nausea and vomiting

According to recent research*, CBD can be used to treat nausea and vomiting. These studies have shown that CBD is capable of supporting the natural cannabinoid enzyme, known as anandamide. Preliminary studies show that CBD activates 5-HT1A, which is the monoamine neurotransmitter that reduces the nausea sensation once activated.

A study compiled by the British Pharmacological Society reported that the manipulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates nausea and vomiting in both humans and animals.

CBD for schizophrenia

As we have already mentioned, CBD oil works as an incredible treatment for various mental health conditions, from anxiety to schizophrenia. A study that was published in 2011* by schizophrenia research found that high doses of CBD lead to a fewer number of psychotic episodes in patients who suffered from schizophrenia.

In 2015, two scientists published a systematic review* of all schizophrenia and CBD studies. They concluded that although more large randomized clinical trials are needed, preliminary studies are showing that CBD is a safe, effective, and well-tolerated antipsychotic compound. It has been determined that CBD is not too dissimilar to atypical antipsychotics in that it could help with hallucinations as well as things like lack of social functioning and emotion.

Final Thoughts about the current situation of CBD in Oklahoma

There is no denying that CBD oil provides incredible medical benefits that every person deserves to have access to. Looking at the multiple studies that have been conducted, all delivering positive results, and often miraculous treatment options, it’s hard for many of us to understand why CBD has not been legalized everywhere.

It is important to mention that although a short list, CBD does come with some possible side effects and therefore it is crucial to consult with your primary physician before any CBD consumption. Research is still in its infancy, but to date, nothing serious has been brought to light. In all honesty, when compared to the side effects of many pharmaceutical drugs, these are minor. However, keep in mind that CBD is available in different forms and levels of potency. For this reason, while some CBD oil may work to treat your medical conditions, others may not.

For now, while lawmakers continue to work out the details as to what should and should not be allowed concerning CBD oils, we will be patiently waiting for the results of state question 788 to determine if medical marijuana will be legalized in full, in the state of Oklahoma.
