It is pretty common for celebrities to jump on bandwagons, so it is hardly a surprise that they are getting involved in the CBD market; an industry with the momentum of a runaway train on a track of endless length. While the industry was worth $170 million in 2017, it is likely to enter billion-dollar territory either this year or in 2020.
Now that the Farm Bill has been passed into law, it is legal to grow industrial hemp; the main provider of CBD. While you can also extract CBD from marijuana, it is a harder task because you have to avoid including THC if you want your products to be federally legal. As well as selling CBD as a health supplement, brands are including it in their range of beauty products, not to mention creating special products for pets.
To be fair, notable celebrities such as Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg have been advocates of marijuana for years, and the likes of Kristen Bell, Nate Diaz, and Jennifer Aniston are open about their use of cannabidiol. However, only a handful have put their money where their mouths are and financed a company. In this article, we check out five of the most prominent celebrities involved in CBD brands.
1 – Whoopi Goldberg
Goldberg has enjoyed a long and illustrious career where she has achieved success in movies and television, not to mention as an author and TV host. The comedian has regularly spoken about her use of medical marijuana and admits to vaporizing the herb to help reduce menstrual cramp pain, as well as combatting the symptoms of glaucoma.
Goldberg is savvy enough to recognize a business opportunity and has the finances to get involved. This is precisely what she did when teaming up with Maya Elisabeth, a veteran of the medical marijuana industry. Together, they formed Whoopi and Maya, where they sell CBD and THC infused products for women in need of relief from menstrual cramps. Unfortunately, as their salves contain THC, they are only sold to consumers in California and Colorado at present.
2 – Tommy Chong
As one half of Cheech & Chong, he appeared in numerous stoner movies and became a weed icon of the 1970s. It is no surprise that he has put his name behind a marijuana brand, Chong’s Choice, but did you know that the hero of stoners everywhere also believes in the power of CBD?
While Chong’s Choice mainly sells THC products, it recently teamed up with Diamond CBD to sell cannabidiol items. According to Chong, Diamond CBD is the best cannabidiol supplier in the industry, and he was happy to align his brand with one that promises and delivers premium quality merchandise. The Chong’s Choice line of CBD products includes vape pens, edibles, and oils.
3 – Gwyneth Paltrow
Paltrow is famous for appearing in movies such as Sliding Doors, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and the Iron Man series. You might not be aware that she owns a lifestyle company called Goop, which she helped found in 2008. Goop is headquartered in California and is involved with fashion and health brands.
Recently, Goop announced that it was getting involved in the CBD market in a big way. In early 2019, the brand launched its line of CBD goods called Fleur Marche, which primarily consists of skincare products, tinctures, lotions, edibles, and oils. According to Meredith Schroeder who is heavily involved in the project, the goal is to add an element of sophistication to the cannabis space.
4 – Montel Williams
The Montel Williams Show enjoyed great success in the 1990s and early 2000s before it finally concluded in 2008. The former U.S. Marine has been embroiled in his fair share of controversies; not least his role as spokesperson for a payday lending company and the topics covered on his daytime TV show.
In any case, Williams is a firm believer in the healing power of CBD and has created his own line of products with the aid of CBD sellers. Montel by Select includes products such as 100% hemp-derived CBD gel capsules and cannabis oil products. Williams has used CBD to treat multiple sclerosis; a condition he was diagnosed with back in 1999.
He admits to using marijuana almost every day in the last couple of decades, but his line of CBD products will be available in markets that THC oils and edibles are not.
5 – Melissa Etheridge
The famed singer-songwriter has won a couple of Grammy Awards and been nominated for over a dozen more. After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in 2004, she was given a steroid, a painkiller after chemotherapy sessions, and further pills to counteract the effect of the initial pills!
Etheridge believed that there had to be a better way to recover from chemotherapy, and after conducting plenty of research, she decided to try medicinal marijuana. She became so enamored by the effects of the herb that she created a brand called Etheridge Farms, which is designed to provide marijuana products to Californian medical patients.
Interestingly, she also put her support behind a novel idea: Weed wine! It is created by dropping a pound of marijuana into a cask of fermenting wine. It works out at about 1.5 grams of cannabis per bottle and the cannabinoids include THC and CBD. As the weed isn’t heated, the compounds are transferred into the wine in THCa and CBDa form, which is significantly less psychoactive than cannabinoids heated in joints and bowls.
Celebrity CBD Brands: Final Thoughts
Although it is often tiresome to see celebrities becoming involved in whatever is deemed to be ‘in fashion’ at the time, having the backing of famous people can only help the CBD industry as it continues to grow. I mean, we’ve probably all been guilty in the past of doing something or buying something just because our favorite famous person has endorsed it, right?
There is plenty of room in a rapidly expanding market for regular entrepreneurs to compete with celebrities, although they won’t generate the same level of publicity. We hope that the celebrities involved in the CBD market produce high-quality products and don’t bring down the overall level of the industry.
