5 Best CBD Oils for Arthritis [2018 Review]

The 2018 guide to CBD oil for Arthritis
MarijuanaBreak Staff / Updated on July 17, 2018

It is common knowledge that those suffering from arthritis can have their pain reach a point where it becomes debilitating, but for the individuals themselves that must go through this sometimes never-ending pain, a 24-hour period with slightly greater relief can be the difference between night and day. Conventional pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory and painkilling medications can often be paired up with negative side effects, and a lot of the time, these drugs are equally as difficult to live with as the condition itself.

Thankfully for those with arthritis, CBD oil has begun to take shape as an all-natural alternative therapy to conventional medications, and for good reason. Many arthritis patients have already begun discussing just how much relief and ease CBD oils have brought into their lives, encouraging other patients with arthritis to make the switch.

Keep reading to discover more information regarding CBD oil, the effects it can have on inflammation and joint pain, and of course, to discover our hand-picked selections for the 5 Best CBD Oils for Arthritis that are currently available.

Benefits of CBD Oil:

For arthritis patients specifically, the benefits of CBD oil seem to be quite advantageous considering the many anti-inflammatory properties of the active compound. Patients with arthritis tend to absorb the CBD oil, either by orally consuming safe-to-eat CBD drops, or by using a CBD based gel or cream and rubbing it into the painful areas of the body that are affected by the arthritis.

People of all ages have reported success stories, but most of all this alternative medicinal method doesn’t have the nasty side effects of conventional medications, and has no psychoactive or mind altering effects like “traditional” cannabis. In other words, this oil is safe for consumption any time of the day without it altering functionality, productivity, state of mind, etc.

“I am 62 years old and have suffered from painful, and sometimes even immobilizing arthritis, specifically in my wrists and elbows. I tried many conventional medications that the doctor prescribed to me, and began experiencing horrible side effects. About a year ago I decided to switch to CBD oil. I began ingesting drops orally, as well as rubbing the gel into my joints. The results have been miraculous and I am now able to function better than I have in years.”
-Summer Andrews

“I have been able to mostly cut out my use of opioid painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs thanks to CBD oil extracts. It feels great to be relying more on nature than on pharmaceuticals to assist my knees and ankles, the regions of my body that seem to be taking the most damage from the arthritis.”
-Gerry Burlington

Aside from independent individuals, the use of CBD oil is also being recognized and featured by media around the world, even if the FDA still refuses to approve the oil for anything other than intractable epilepsy. For example, one of the top CBD oil manufacturers in the world, Elixinol, has been featured a multitude of times by various global media sites including The Wall Street Journal, Men’s Health, and even CNN, praised for its excellence and effectiveness.

Medical Research and CBD Oil:

Although a variety of studies have been released expressing real, medicinal qualities of CBD oil, further research still needs to continue being conducted in order for the general public to become more aware of its therapeutic potential.

One of the studies that really has brought about promising results was a lab test conducted during 2016 by Hammell et al., in which arthritic lab rats were closely analysed after being treated with various doses of CBD based gel.

The end results were positive (some would even say astonishing), as a decrease in not only pain levels was observed, but also inflammation – making the gel a powerful solution to the two primary problems with arthritis: pain management and inflammation management.

The conclusion of the study specifically states, “…these data indicate that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviours and inflammation, without evident side-effects.”

Frequently Asked Questions About CBD Oil:

How is CBD oil extracted?

There are a variety of methods that can be used to produce CBD oil, but most companies with top quality, trustworthy products use a process known as CO2 extraction. During CO2 extraction, high pressure carbon dioxide is applied by skilled professionals at low temperatures using specialized machinery. The process requires a level of expertise, and preserves the quality and purity of the CBD.

Is it legal to purchase CBD oil?

CBD oil products are legal in all 50 states, as long as the CBD percentage is under 0.3% (products with a ratio over 0.3% are legal in some states). Because of the lack of psychoactive THC, CBD is not seen as a harmful substance in most regions, which is of course wonderful news for those who rely upon its medicinal benefits for relief.

In order to purchase CBD oil, is it required to get a Doctor’s permission or recommendation?

This depends of course on the product, but generally speaking, you do not need a Doctor’s recommendation to purchase CBD oil, particularly for products containing less than 0.3% THC.

How long until the CBD begins working?

Of course, each CBD product and each human body is different from the next; on average, most CBD oil based products require around 20-30 minutes for one to begin noticing an effect taking place, but this can vary depending on things like oil strength, dosage, metabolism, and a number of other factors.

How does CBD work on a chemical level?

When CBD is in contact with the body, whether topically or orally, it activates receptors throughout the nervous system and brain in a region specifically known as the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. Unlike THC, CBD works to activate a different set of receptors, making it especially effective at stimulating chemical pathways that are involved in pain and inflammation responses.

What are some of the benefits of CBD oil?

Aside from Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (two rare forms of epilepsy), none of the claims regarding CBD oil’s effectiveness are currently supported by the FDA. The organization does not actually allow anyone to claim that their CBD-based product can guarantee a result, but many users who have given CBD oil products a try have reported it helping them with a number of conditions and challenges. Some of the conditions or medical ailments they have reported CBD oil assisting with include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Anorexia
  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disorders

  1. Kent

I have been using two doses of medical CBD (from a dispensary in FL), 30mg dose in the morning and evening and it is working amazing for inflammation

  2. Brian Harris

Well written article. I just want to add that CBD won’t cure Arthritis but it does make it more manageable

  3. Skylar

Have been exploring some options for my mom for quite awhile now, she has been suffering from carpel tunnel for almost 5 years now, and has never received treatment except for NSAID’s. Still trying to decide between either the oil or the lotion but I’ve done plenty of research online and it seems like the cream may be the way to go, at lease for superficial wrist pain

  4. Chan

Rheumatoid arthritits sufferer for over 14 years. Thank you for referencing this scientific reports, it is great to know that we are actually working towards understanding how the drug works rather than just pitching more and more chemicals into our bodies. Really promising so far.

  5. Austin

can’t speak for any of the other brands but CBD Pure has worked well for me. Great customer service and never have experienced a backorder in almost a year of nearly monthly orders

  6. Abby

Purekana is good, their mint CBD oil is probably the best I’ve tried. I am waiting for them to get into the vape market because in my experience vaping seems to be most effective for me. I know a lot of people say that the creams are most effective for arthritis relief, I will be trying the pure kana cream soon

  7. Andrew

Used the Purekana and it worked well. Mild arthritis in my feet and ankles from a surgery many years ago. Thanks for the article

  8. Lydia
    CBD oil

How to sensibly buy LEGAL cbd oil? Because I got a letter saying customs has confiscated my package two times already and I’m pissed.

  9. Greg

I actually prefer the medical grade creams for joint pain. Like it says in the article it really seems to deliver the CBD right to the area of inflammation. I have used CBD oils before and they take much longer to kick in and to me they did not seem as potent.

  10. Francis T

Read an article recently about CB receptors and their direct interaction with inflammation response. Truly believe CBD will be used more commonly for pain relief than OTC meds within the next two decades

    1. Dr. David Allen

It is still too early to determine that. Research is being conducted on CBD and the endocannabinoid system and it does look promising.

  11. Andy

If CBD is an anti-inflammatory makes sense that it would be effective on arthritis whether you’re taking a pill, oil lotion etc

  12. Dylan

Not too sure about the pain cream yet. I know people have used it with success, but am not so sure I’m convinced it’s worth getting both the oil and the cream. And why is the cream more expensive than the oil droppers? Any suggestions??

    1. Jeffery Cobb

It really depends on your condition. Some people find it more effective to rub it in around the pain. It’s quite individual. For me I use a combination of the oil and the creams

  13. Marsha Valentino

I have tried the pain creams without much success, but am wondering if maybe I do not have a good product. Will probably be trying the Pure Kana lotion as this site and a few others I’ve read it seems to pop up as consistently good. Anyone have any comparisons between Pure kana and Green roads? Thanks ion advance

  14. Mary Hammond

I actually use a combination of the oils and creams. Love it!

    1. Jeffrey K

Me too. I use the purekana combination. Which you using?

  15. Fay

Been using the lotions. They help. Which though is better the oils or the lotions. And also can i rub the oil on my skin

  16. Elaine

My step father has terrible arhtritis and I want him to try the lotion or oil. He is 86 with a heart valve health issue. Would using the lotion or oil on his hands and shoulders pose any concerns with his heart condition?

    1. Adam

It’s hard to tell without knowing his full medical condition. It is important that you consult with your primary physician before purchasing anything

  17. Andrew H

If you live with Arthritis you know that you are willing to try anything. The pain can be unbearable. I used to think that this stuff was a joke. I was wrong. Bless nature!

  18. Linda Knox

After reading this I consulted with my doc. He isn’t against it but won’t recommend. What do you say?

    1. Karen

According to this article and to others I have seen, no doctor recommendation is needed in any of the 50 states for CBD oil.

  19. Kelly Diaz

    Excellent info. CBD works!

  20. Kerry Freeman

CBD is good for arthritis, inflammation and a bunch of other conditions related to pain. My doctor can’t prescribe it but does recommend it.

  21. Anne S

Living with RA is tough. Anything that is herbal helps.

    1. Elaine T

      I second that!

  22. Mike JenkinsBrown

I have arthritis pain in my neck, back, hips, elbows and knees. I only sleep 2 to 3 hours before the pain wakes me. I fall asleep usually from being exhausted. I took Charlotte’s Web hemp CBD oil Advanced, 1 half dropper, and was able to sleep for 7 hours. I now take a few times a day as well as bedtime. CBD oil has reduced my pain from 8 to 2 with the first dose. I’m active again and able to loose unwanted weight.

    1. Erine Johnson

I tried CW and it didn’t work for me. Currently using the first one here on the list, it’s not bad. What dosage were you using?

      1. Sophie Grant

Been using CBD for a while. Works well. Better than meds!

  23. Rick Tate

I have fibromyalgia, inflammation Arthritis and Anxiety. If you want to treat the pain, go for the stronger mg. For anxiety the lower mg is enough. That’s my experience.

  24. Jack T

I suffer in my hands. I have tried multiple brands & varying strengths of CBD dosages, and while it has helped to some degree it is expensive. Any thoughts?

    1. Adam

For arthritis the lower mg probably won’t work

      1. Raymond Evans

I started with the 300mg and increased. I find that the 1000mg works well for me.

        1. Fiona

Me too. Which brand you using?

        2. Tiffiny

Do they come in 1000mg or do you just increase you dose?

  25. Dave Daugherty

I am a painter by living. Over the years my legs have given in and now I suffer from a tour meniscus and partially from ACL. The CBD helps to an extent!

  26. Lois Hill

Don’t go for the lower mg they are a waste of time. Just for the 1000mg or above or a full spectrum

  27. Lee Simantel

My wife has severe ostioarthritis… not the more common rhumatoid arthritis…
Do you have any studies indicating which oil or dosage may be most benificial for that?

  28. Christy Kane

    Excellent article, thanks

  29. Andrew M

The pain on some days in unbearable. It helps to some extent.

  30. Bibi

My mom has rx for 0.06mg cbd / thc 22.68 mg from PR, looking to use hemp cbd oil while rx card in FL is being processed – what would be equivalent dose w hemp cbd oil? Confussed w all options at whole foods/luckys market!

  31. Samuel B

I know that for some it doesn’t help, but for me it helps with the symptoms. I am able to function

  32. Jesse J

Been taking it for 5 months. Since i’ve been taking it I have more energy and can manage to do more tasks throughout the day.

  33. michellem

I’m on many meds for my arthritis and fibromyalgia . Including methotrexate, zeljanz, prednisone, diclofenac, folic acid and cymbalta. My doc believes there has not been enough research on the side effects of cbd oil but I have bought some and want to start trying it. I want to get off some or all the meds I’m currently on. How do you suggest I start taking the oil? Do I just gradually wean off my other drugs?

    1. Adam

It’s important to understand first of all how the CBD interacts with those meds. If there are no side-effects from taking both you can start on a low dose and see where it takes you. Gradually increase. It’s not a good idea to suddenly drop your meds. It also depends on the brand you are purchasing from. You should ask them as well

      1. Gina

I would never stop taking your medications. I’m in same boat as you and on the same meds. My pain meds were completely cut off so now I’m gonna try this and kratom. Let me know if the cbd oil helped for pain. I’m severely disabled.

    2. Zoe Demetrius

I tried 1500 mg in Costa Rica…i was relieved of pain for the first time ever in my life. It’s a sad sad condition to bare

  34. Carrie Winters

Anyone have advice on which brand is working for them? I do not have the money to go through trial and error. My wrists and fingers are in so much pain and can’t bend them (just diagnosed with RA) and I teach piano lessons for a living! This is horrible. There is absolutely no pain pill that takes this away.

    1. John Gregory

Have you tried any? I’ve been using the 1000mg purekana. It has been working well for me. There are others though. I am also keen to know if any others have worked for anyone else as this stuff isn’t cheap.

    2. Patricia

New to this stuff. Want to know what’s the best oil to use for Osteoarthritis. (Knees)

      1. Heather

Have osteoarthritis in knees. How much cbds a day do I need for pain relief. ?

  35. Barbara Boudreaux

Anyone who gets Migraines will no how terrible they are. Thanks to purple kush strain I have had some great relief.

  36. Wendy Whitlow

Have using cbd for arthritis. It is effective

    1. Eric H

Sure is! Much more effective than the other medication I was on

      1. Arthur G

Can you combine CBD with other painkillers? I am looking to get off the meds, but don’t want to immediately drop them

        1. Adam

It depends which meds you are on. Generally speaking it is best to start slow and increase the dose. See how you feel and then adjust your meds accordingly. You’d have to be more specific though.

  37. Andrew Sanders

Excellent read. In regards to these oils, I have tried a few. The first two didn’t work, the third 600mg did. It doesn’t cure the pain, but it makes living with it much more manageable.

  38. Hannah S

Great info. My husband hasn’t recently started. Showing promising signs

    1. Adam

Keep us updated and stay healthy

  39. Diana Bell

It helps me with my joint stiffness. Each time i run out I can feel it

  40. Leanne

Anyone with chronic pain from arthritis knows often that pain and stiffness is worse in the morning. So when I tried vaping CBD oil for chronic pain relief, that was one of my major concerns. I was skeptical at first. I tried it in the morning. I always get up before the kids anyway so they aren’t exposed too much to Zombie Mom. It usually takes nearly 2 hours for the morning aches to work their way to a manageable level. The first morning, within a half hour I was up and moving. I still (and probably always will) have some pain and stiffness in my hands and feet due to the permanant damage but I would say that the CBD helps bring the pain in those areas down from an 8 to a 2, something that has never happened with any of my prescription NSAIDs. – Leanne

  41. Mary Watts

Comforting to know that people are finding relief with CBD. My husband has just started and it is showing positive results.

  42. Tyra

Just purchased 1000mg of CBD from PureKana. The mint flavor is pretty tasty and there is no trace of a marijuana scent. I’m still poking around at the dosing, but I can tell a difference in my motivation to do housework, etc. I broke my right ankle (tib, fib, and two bones in my foot) a few years ago and I also have sprained my left ankle in the past. I’ve had issues with stairs ever since then and it’s rare that I can see my ankle bones. The puffiness has gone down in both of my ankles and I’m starting to be able to maneuver stairs more easily. Every time I catch myself habitually taking one step at a time while going down the stairs (leading with my right every time…. it’s hard to explain) I try to make myself go down the “normal” way. And I’m becoming more confident with my movement. I also have hip problems and shoulder and neck problems and whatever my Rheumatologist hasn’t officially diagnosed yet even though I’ve been seeing her for quite some time… what I’m saying is, is that I can see an improvement. I tend to take an initial dose in the morning and a dose at night time and whenever I feel some less than tolerable discomfort, I may give myself some booster drops (not a full dose). It’s what seems to work for me so far.

  43. Michael Hess

I have been able to cut out most of my painkillers. Expensive, but great stuff

  44. Mickie Francis

I know that not everyone has found relief with CBD but there are tons of studies on it. I personally have been using it for a year and for me it works. It all comes down to the correct dosage and which brand works for you. Also I think it is a matter of genetics

  45. Bonnie Navarro

The moment I got rid of my arthritis pain with the help of CBD Oil was phenomenal. It was the most relief I have had in months and I was incredibly happy with the outcome.

    1. Frank C

Me too. I stumbled across CBD about a year ago. Stay healthy Bonnie

    2. kate

what did you start out with? how much? what miligram did you start with? I have a severe case of ra and tired of being in pain. My dr. has me on predisone, folic acid and mtx and the side effects scare me. I just started my meds and I go back in a couple of weeks for lab work and then consultation with her. It can cause cancer and liver issues. I have done a lot of research but I can not find How much to start with on the miligrams.

      1. Adam

Kate, as you are on medication it would be best to reach out to the company you are thinking of purchasing from. They would know best. PureKana is a good place to start, they are pretty responsive. If you don’t get the answers you are looking for, please reach out to us through our FB page. We will do our best to help

  46. Jerry H

I use CBD to relieve pain associated with the condition

  47. William Wade

To all those non believers. It works. And that is is coming from an old man who has been suffering for 30 years.

  48. Dennis Whitaker

Don’t waste your money on low mg bottles. Get a good brand, minimum 1000mg or you won’t feel a thing. That’s from experience.

    1. Rosa M. Smith

I completely disagree. The 1000mg may be for certain types of pain. I use the 600mg bottle and it is more than enough. I think it is individual.

  49. Kathy K

My first signs of the illness came on without warning when I was 21 — I was literally in Uni. Weed and CBD oils have become an integral part of my life and it helps.

  50. Patricia Speller

I had never heard of CBD oil until 2 months ago. Got some for my husband. It helps with his pain and anxiety. Great stuff

  51. Dorothy G. Alexander

I found that I need THC for it to work, even though i know some people that only use the CBD and have amazing results.

  52. Sonya Schill

Helps with the pain, but don’t get a potency under 300mg, they are a waste of money.

    1. Dorothy Alexander

      I completely agree!

  53. Isabel

Hello! I’m 30 years old and I have been diagnose RA. I started methotrexate a month ago. I’m very interested on CBD oils but there is nowhere I can find what percentage is more indicated for my disease as the CBD oils come in different percentages. Could anyone help me, please? Thanks in advance

    1. ashley necker

Hi! My cousin will be 30 in a few days and was diagnosed with JRA at birth. I am trying to decide what kind to get for her as well. I will be sure to let you know if I find one that works! Please do the same:-)

    2. Becky

Did anybody ever answer you about which mg is best to treat AS? I have been looking for that answer as well before I purchase the oil

      1. Adam

Hey Becky! The dosage is very individual. Most AS patients experience a certain level of relief with higher mg, but that is just generally speaking. The best way to go about it is to get the bottle of your preference and work around the standard dosage written on the label. Then work up from there until you find what works for you. If you need any more info, please don’t hesitate to ask.

  54. Julian Harrison

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and a muscle spasm disorder. The medication I was terrible. But then I found CBD. I now don’t take any prescribe medication as the CBD works in a way that I’m almost pain free and fully able to continue a normal life. Amazing stuff

    1. Janie Hill

What size dosage are you taking each day & how often? Are you using drops?

  55. Susan P

I didn’t find it to work, but my husband is over the moon. He hasn’t felt this good in years. I suppose it’s depends on your condition and what you’re trying to treat

  57. Robin Saunders

I’ve been using cbd for a while. It’s not a miracle cure but it does help with the pain associated with the condition.

  58. Andrea Lewis

If you think that CBD will cure Arthritis then you are wrong. What i can say is that it does help with the pain. Been using it for the past year.

After years of pain left me I finally came across this stuff. I use the high potency oils, but i don’t know what I would do without them. It doesn’t cure the condition but makes living with the pain so much more manageable.

CBD is great but you have to combine it with a good diet. That’s what works for me

CBD is the best treatment out-there.

It helps with the pain. My husband has been taking it for a few months. Depending on the brand you choose, you might need a stronger potency though.

It’s the pain that kills me the most and while CBD won’t cure Arthritis it sure does make living with it more manageable. Great stuff for the pain

It’s just a shame that it’s so expensive. Most people with a serious problem needs a high dosage. Most people can’t afford the cost. It is a great product though.

CBD Salve or Oil should help relieve inflammation and pain. We have friends with arthritis and bursitus and it has made a real difference for them.
