Dr. Eric Exelbert

Dr. Eric Exelbert is a board-certified pediatric intensivist and pediatrician who specializes in pediatric critical care medicine. He obtained his degree in medicine in 1998 from the American University of the Caribbean, and currently works at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL. Dr. Exelbert is also registered in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, which means that he is permitted to authorize the use of medical marijuana for qualifying patients.

He currently runs ExAlt Med, a clinic that helps patients of all ages who haven’t responded to traditional treatment options. Given his medical background, he has a special interest in pediatric patients but is able to help patients of any age. He sees patients of all ages and all diagnoses, and also has a keen interest in complex pediatric and adult cases. Very often, these complex cases require a non-traditional treatment approach, which might include using medical cannabis when other methods have been found to be ineffective.

Dr. Exelbert completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 2006. He went on to complete his pediatric critical care fellowship at Denver Children’s Hospital, and this is where he nurtured his true passion for pediatric medicine in particular.

Dr. Exelbert’s first notable professional experience is his work as a pediatric physician at Pediatric Critical Care of South Florida, which he started in 2010. Specifically, he works as a Primary Care Physician at Plantation Nursing and Rehab Center (Kidz Korner). Other experience includes his involvement at Health Corporations Transitions Company, as well as his role as Assistant Professor of Clinical Biomedical Sciences at Florida Atlantic University School of Medicine.

He was the founding partner of Health Corporations Transitions Company (founded in January 2013) and was involved in the company until 2015. His responsibilities included seeing pediatric patients who had complex medical needs, and he had a strong involvement in the outpatient center. He also saw patients who had complex medical admissions in the follow up as an outpatient. The mission of the company was to offer consultative services for complex patients who suffered from undiagnosed medical issues.

He began his work as Assistant Professor at Florida Atlantic University School of Medicine in March 2013 and is still involved here. His responsibilities include giving lectures to third-year medical students every semester. He also supervises the clinical Pediatric ICU Rotation for the 4th year medical students at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

Skills and Interests

As an Intensive Care Physician, Dr. Exelbert sees thousands of patients every year. Through his handling of such a wide scope of diagnosis, he has cultivated an extensive experience base which has made him better equipped to make critical care decisions for unique patient cases.

Through his experience with pediatric ICU, Dr. Exelbert has gained a significant understanding of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) – the network of endogenous cannabinoid receptors that are primarily found throughout the nervous systems and mammalian immune.

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for mediating the therapeutic effects of medical marijuana. Often, a dysfunction of the endocannabinoid system is involved in many medical issues. Therefore, using cannabinoids could be an effective treatment option for various illnesses because they have a restorative effect on the endocannabinoid tone and neurotransmission. While this may sound a bit confusing, Dr. Exelbert is highly educated on the endocannabinoid system and knows how it is involved in overall health and well-being.

In addition to treating young patients with complex conditions, Dr. Exelbert also works intimately with Palliative Care and Hospice Care patients when comfort and end-of-life issues are essentials. He is committed to finding the most compassionate and affordable to provide care to patients and their families based on personal needs.

Dr. Exelbert has dedicated his life and career to treating the most critically ill patients. His objective is for patients and his/her family to have a specific and correct diagnosis, a feeling of compassion, an open and honest dialogue, and to have trust in him. The defining qualities of his care are empathy and kindness.
