If you are serious about your marijuana usage and are determined to enjoy every last gram, it is essential for you to purchase accessories. If you use joints, you need rolling papers, filters and a lighter at the very least, for example. When it comes to weed ‘extras,’ you don’t realize how much you need a specific item until you really need it!
We now live in an age of convenience where food and alcohol can be delivered to your door after a few clicks of a mouse. This is something that has extended to the marijuana industry. It began when companies such as Eaze enabled you to get a medical marijuana card online AND allowed you to chose weed which is delivered to your address.
Although it could end up increasing the number of recluses in the world, it is hard to beat such service. Now, we have a situation where you can be sent special cannabis accessory ‘hampers’ containing everything from papers to bongs.
Who is Hemper & What Does It Do?
Hemper is an innovative company based in New York that sells marijuana smoking accessories. It was founded by Henry Kochhar, Bryan Gerber, and Ravjot Bhasin in 2015, and delivers worldwide. Hemper was greatly aided by a $1 million investment from Evolution Corporate Advisor. Initially, the firm had 35 subscribers, but it quickly grew into the thousands.
Hemper offers monthly subscriptions for boxes containing items such as grinders, tips, rolling papers, and lighters. One of the coolest aspects of Hemper is that you don’t know what you’re getting every month because it likes to keep you guessing. If you don’t like surprises, rest assured, Hemper is NOT going to send you garbage.
This is how it works:
- You choose your box based on the subscription plans (more on what is available later).
- You decide how often you want your box delivered. Choose between monthly, every 3 months, every 6 months, or annually.
- Sit back and wait for Hemper to make the delivery. The company promises to ship your package discreetly and ships its boxes from the 15th to the 13th of every month. Any order placed after the final day of a month will be classified as next month’s box.
You can expect your box to include the core essentials, a couple of surprises, and a new glass piece if you choose that particular option. Hemper subscribers also benefit from limited edition goods because the company has collaborations with various brands, and celebrities such as Chef Henry, Dabbing Granny, Rico Nasty, Adam iLL, and Kimmy Tan.
The brand has also appeared in a huge number of publications such as High Times, Forbes, Leafly, The Guardian, and Entrepreneur.
Gerber spoke to Entrepreneur about the company’s immense success and confessed that he used to smoke a lot of marijuana while in college. He noted that at various times during the year, his stoner friends would ask him if they could take a pack of rolling papers off him in exchange for $5. The reason for this was the scarcity of marijuana accessories.
Gerber realized that a subscription service for weed essentials could make a fortune and discovered that Amazon didn’t go near weed-related items. He co-founded Hemper with Kochhar and Bhasin and sold 35 boxes in the first month. Gerber said he continued to monitor rivals and also discovered how popular a YouTube group called WeedTubers were.
Next, Hemper brought on one of the WeedTubers named Jane Dro who had 20,000 subscribers. She would help the trio select items which were sent out in a box. On that particular month, they got 900 subscribers; compared to the 150 they had before the help of Dro. It snowballed from there, and within two years, Hemper had over 7,500 subscribers, and things have got even better since.
What Subscriptions Does Hemper Offer?
Bare Essentials – $0.99
This first offering is for cash-strapped stoners. You are guaranteed at least four items, classified as ‘Core Essentials’ which Hemper says are worth over $15 in value. Items likely to be included are full-size lighters, doob tubes, king-size rolling papers, Hemp wick, filter tips, and a few mystery items.
It seems like a phenomenal deal on the surface, and it is if you live in the United States. The shipping cost of $4.95 within the U.S. means you are still getting value for money. It is debatable whether this is the case outside these shores because international customers must pay an eye-watering $11 shipping cost. Therefore, it is best if you opt for larger Hemper packages if you live outside of America.
The Hemper Pack – $14.99
You are guaranteed a minimum of seven items which may include cleaning gear, odor eliminators, and smell-proof technology. At $15 a month, it is reasonable value for money, even when the $7 shipping for Canadian customers and $11 to overseas users is added on. Hemper makes a few original products, and some of them will be included in your Hemper Pack.
The Hemper Box – $29.99
This is the main event and offers fantastic value for money at a cent under $30. You get at least 10 items in the box including a glass piece. While other subscription boxes do the same, Hemper goes the extra mile by ensuring the glass you get is of premium quality; such as an actual rig!
For example, the April Hemper Box included the following items:
- 3 large smell proof bags
- 2 Hemper stickers
- Assorted tin ashtray
- Hemper Pineapple Rig V2
- 14mm Flower Bowl
- Quartz 14mm male high airflow banger
- Pineapple carb cap + dab tool
- Pineapple air freshener
- OCB Slim Virgin papers
- Assorted twisted hemp
- Hemp clipper lighter
- Assorted filter tips
For the record, the Hemper Pineapple Rig alone costs $59.99 on the website! Even when you add the $11 shipping to Canada and $18 shipping fee if you live outside America and Canada, the Hemper Box offers incredible value. We’re talking well over $100 worth of useful products; some of which are limited edition and can’t be bought anywhere else.
My Hemper Box Experience
First of all, I was stoked to have the opportunity to avoid the head shop in the expectation that Hemper would cater to my needs. I received the April box, the contents of which are listed above. There was a lot of useful little items such as the light, filter tips, and tin ashtray, but I was very impressed by the entire dab rig collection.
Hemper thought of everything by providing a rig, a bowl, a banger, a carb cap, and a dab tool. Basically, if you’ve never dabbed before, you already have everything you need for a worthwhile experience. What separates Hemper from the rest is the sheer quality of the glass pieces they send. Subscribers regularly praise the company for providing consistently top-notch glass pieces on a monthly basis.
While other subscription services send you ‘ok’ glass pieces that you may use a couple of times and leave to gather dust, Hemper goes all out. Its Pineapple rig is one that you would be proud to own and to get it as part of a $30 per month package is incredible. While it isn’t quite a top of the line rig (it retails at $60), it is ideal if dipping your toe into dabbing for the first time.
If you get bored of dabbing, you can revert back to joint smoking because you have the papers, the filter tips, the lighter, and the ashtray.
What Else Does Hemper Sell?
It would be a lot easier to tell you what the brand doesn’t sell! It has an enormous array of one-off Past Boxes which are yours for between $49.99 and $99.99. Some of the boxes are Hemper originals while others are as a result of a collaboration. For example, the Hemper X Adam iLL Collab Box costs $75.99 and contains:
- Adan iLL Hemper Air Freshener
- Adam iLL Hemper sweatband with stash pocket
- Tech wooden tips
- Tech alcohol swabs
- Tech hemp wick
- Torch lighter
- Perforated filter tips
- Premium quartz banger
- Hemper Soda Cup rig
The most expensive Past Box is the Henny Things Possible X Hemper Collab Box which costs $99.99 and contains:
- Limited edition Hemper slaps
- Henny Things Possible doob tube
- Henny air freshener
- Hemper Silicone Ashtray
- Henny BIC Lighter
- Henny glass filter tip
- Henny Gang rolling papers
- Henny Gang Hemper Rig
If you think $100 is a little steep for this particular box, you must realize that the rig is a very special one indeed. Hemper collaborated with Chef Henny to design a scientific rig shaped like a Hennessey’s cognac bottle. A combination of the unusually shaped body of the rig and the Showerhead percolator means you’ll enjoy some of the smoothest rips ever. Add crushed ice to the ice pinch for an even smoother experience.
I haven’t even touched on the Hemper store which is as big an online marijuana accessory shop as you’re likely to find. Aside from the Hemper boxes, there are dab rigs, dab tools, bongs, vaporizers, glass pipes, and cannabis accessories. If you’re undecided as to what to buy, there is a helpful Staff’s Picks page which outlines cool bongs, rigs, and banger nails.
You can also look at the latest products on the New Arrivals page, check out the biggest sellers, or find gifts for a stoner friend according to price. Look for gifts under $100 if you’re feeling flush and gifts under $15 if you’re not.
Where Can I Purchase Hemper Goods?
Don’t go anywhere other than the official Hemper website. Once you have chosen your preferred Hemper package and subscription frequency, please note that all orders renew automatically. After opening an account, you have the option to change your plan frequency in the Subscription Settings.
Canceling your order is also easy but remember, while you are allowed to cancel at any time, if you have been billed for the current month, you will receive the month’s box as your cancellation is only effective from the next billing cycle. The cut-off point for monthly subscriptions is the final day of the month.
If your glass piece is broken, take a picture and send it, along with the glass to email@example.com. Make sure you do so within 48 hours of delivery. It can take anywhere from 7 to 15 working days to receive your package. I was pleased with the discretion shown by Hemper; my box arrived in an unmarked white solid bag.
Finally, if you’re unhappy with Hemper and want to return your package, do so within 7 days of the delivery date. It is important to note that wraps, rolling papers, and cleaning supplies are not returnable. Unfortunately, you don’t get your money back. Instead, Hemper provides you with store credit in the form of crediting your account or a Hemper Gift Card.
Confusingly, items with prices ending in $.96, .97, .98 and .00 are classified as Final Sale, so you can’t return them and redeem for store credit. In other words, an order worth $44.99 can be returned, but one worth $45.00 cannot.
Final Thoughts on Hemper
Once you visit the Hemper website, the only problem you’ll have is that you may lose track of time, such is the array of goodies. You can purchase a Hemper box to cater to your smoking lifestyle, and it gets sent to your door monthly. The Hemper Box is a steal at $29.99, and you are guaranteed a piece of high-quality glassware such as a bong or rig every time.
The main point of contention with the Bare Essentials package is the shipping cost for those living outside the United States. Shipping costs are also a bit steep for the Hemper Pack, but the Hemper Box is value for money no matter where you live in the world.
Hemper is great for a number of reasons. First, the quality of the products is top notch, and if you subscribe for long enough, you will assemble one hell of a glass collection. Boxes contain everything from daily accessories such as filter tips and rolling papers, to cleaning products, to high-quality glass rigs.
If that isn’t enough, you have the choice of limited-edition items thanks to the company’s regular collaborations. If you don’t want a box, you can still browse the website for excellent bongs, vaporizers, rigs, and much more. Overall, Hemper has taken the marijuana accessory subscription niche to another level, and it is up to everyone else to catch up.
