Vape pens and other types of vaporizers have been heralded as the next big thing in the cannabis industry. One estimate suggests the e-cigarette and vaporizer market will exceed $61 billion per annum by 2025. An increasing number of people now believe that inhaling vapor from marijuana is healthier than smoking the herb. Meanwhile, industry leaders such as Dr. Dabber are busily creating new and improved devices with a focus on cooler vapor, larger heating chambers and faster heating times.
Who is Dr. Dabber?
This company is a manufacturer of vape devices and accessories dedicated to providing customers with premium quality products. The team behind Dr. Dabber has spent years striving to give you the ultimate vaping experience. They want to minimize health risks while ensuring you also benefit from smooth vapor and intense flavor.
As well as having stores in a multitude of American states and territories, such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico, Dr. Dabber has an international presence, with offices in the United Kingdom, Austria, and the Netherlands. It offers dozens of vaporizers and accessories and we will review five of its top products below.
Review of Dr. Dabber’s SWITCH
At $399.99, the SWITCH is one of the most expensive vaporizers on the market. It has been described as the ‘next generation of vaporizer’ by Dr. Dabber, but does it really deliver “unparalleled performance with absolutely no compromise”?
Features & Design of the Dr. Drabber’s Switch
Arguably, the key feature of the SWITCH is the new induction system designed to heat up your herb spectacularly fast. Dr. Dabber is best known for producing dabbing products, but can it step up to the plate when it comes to dry herb?
Induction heating is completely different to the convection and conduction heating methods that are part of most vaporizers. The SWITCH uses an electromagnetic coil to heat up your herb or wax. As a result, your product is not heated from the ‘outside in’ as is normal. Instead, the coil is heated from the ‘inside out’. Induction heating heats up your weed extremely quickly and also has no issue reaching high temperatures.
We were delighted to see that the SWITCH heated up our marijuana within six seconds on a medium setting. The highest temperature setting took around 12 seconds to reach. For the record, the available temperature range is from 300 degrees Fahrenheit to 800 degrees. When you use Pro Mode, you have the option to choose between 25 different temperatures, which is as close to customization as you’re likely to get.
The SWITCH kit includes the unit, a glass bubbler, a black & white ceramic nail, a ceramic flower filter, tweezers, a silicone wax container, and a dab tool/carb cap. You have the option to purchase a quartz nail if you’re seeking better flavor.
Without the glass bubbler, the SWITCH is 9.5”, but is 13” when you attach the bubbler. It resembles an hourglass and is extremely easy to hold with one hand despite its size. While there are several parts, they are easy to assemble. The LED lights helpfully indicate your temperature settings, although it can get tricky to read things when you activate Pro Mode with its 25 settings!
How to use the Dr Drabber SWITCH
There is a ‘Leaf Mode’ for dry herb and an oil setting if you want to use wax. For dry herb, add some water to the glass bubbler and place it on top of the SWITCH unit. Choose your temperature; this is achieved by pressing the + and – buttons. Pack one of the ceramic nails with the herb and use the tweezers to place it in the glass top.
Use the filter to cover the nail and press the power button. Inhale and enjoy! We feel as if Dr. Dabber has not yet mastered the temperatures for dry herb and it still needs to calibrate them for the best result. To be fair, the flavor was fine and the vapor production was more than adequate, but there is room for improvement.
For wax, use the oil setting and add some water to the bubbler. Attach it to the glass top and choose your temperature. Use the tweezers to place the nail inside the glass top and add wax with the dab tool. Power it up, dab the wax into the nail, cover it with the carb cap, and start inhaling!
When using a quartz nail, use Crystal Mode by holding down the + button and flipping the switch to the leaf or oil setting. The LED lights should flash white, and then you can load your wax as per usual.
Dr. Dabber is renowned for its dabbing products, so it’s no surprise that the SWITCH excels when you use wax. The power settings enable you to enjoy full flavor or benefit from enormous clouds. If you want outstanding flavor, use a quartz nail because it heats the wax a little more slowly.
According to Dr. Dabber, you can get up to 150 uses on a single charge, which is remarkable if true. We haven’t reached that number yet, but are closing in on triple figures with no need to recharge as of yet. What’s even better is that the SWITCH fully recharges in one hour! Battery life is indicated by five purple LED lights; each fully lit light represents 20% of power. The ‘pass through’ technology means you can charge as you use.
The SWITCH will cool down after every heating cycle and you will be able to notice it thanks to the flashing blue LED lights. Also, the device won’t begin a heating cycle if there is no induction cup inside of the heating unit. You can use the ‘self-cleaning cycle’ for ceramic induction cups and all you need for a total clean is isopropyl alcohol and some cotton swabs.
Final Thoughts on Dr. Drabber’s Switch
The SWITCH is one of the finest vaporizers on the market. With an incredible battery life, the ability to heat product up to 800 degrees in 12 seconds, separate wax and dry herb settings and up to 25 temperature options, Dr. Dabber allows you to vape on your terms. It would be nice if the concentrates nail was a touch sharper, but it isn’t a major issue. Also, one wonders how you will use the product if you lose the tweezers. Even so, it is no exaggeration to suggest that the SWITCH truly is the ‘future of vaping’.
- Exceptionally fast heating time.
- Outstanding temperature range, all the way to 800 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Incredible battery life.
- Can be used with wax or herb.
- Multiple temperature settings, allowing for customization.
- Might be a bit large for some users.
Review of Dr. Dabber’s Boost eRig (Black Edition)
If you’re tired of transporting a desktop rig with you, it’s time to upgrade to a high-quality portable. Dr. Dabber’s attempt to muscle in on this market takes the form of the Boost, a 5.5” tall portable hash-oil rig powered by a 2,500 mAh 18650 battery. The ‘Black Edition’ is an improved version of the original boost, with larger nails, longer battery life, and a replaceable heating element.
Features & Design Dr. Dabber’s Boost eRig
For $159.95, you get a ton of equipment including the unit, three domeless nails, a magnetic carb cap, a glass water attachment, two storage containers, and much more. We love the carrying case which protects the kit. The only downside is that you need to make space for the box if you’re bringing the Boost with you on the road.
The three domeless nails are titanium, ceramic, and quartz (one of each) so you can have a completely different experience with every vaping session. For example, ceramic is the best for a long session, quartz is ideal for flavor, and titanium should be your go-to option for big clouds. The fact that these nails are domeless makes them perfect for regular dabbers.
The glass water filtration piece does a great job of cooling the vapor and ensures you benefit from excellent flavor too. The LED indicator tells you when the device is ready to use. It is white when you power it on, but turns blue when your weed is heated. This takes between 25 and 40 seconds depending on the setting you use. The Boost’s temperature range is between 515 and 610 degrees; the heater will switch off about 20 seconds after reaching the maximum temperature.
The Boost’s elegant matte black finish makes it aesthetically pleasing, and it is clearly a durable and well-made device. One tricky issue is remembering whether to press the button three times for the titanium nail or five times for the quartz or ceramic nail! It is large for a portable, and is not a rig you can hide in your pocket!
How to use Dr. Dabber’s Boost eRig
The Boost is for concentrates only, so don’t try and use it for dry herb; the temperature settings are too high and will cause combustion. Remove the glass water filtration piece and fill it up with water. Once you unscrew the top of the Boost, you will see the exposed heating element – add your concentrate and screw the nail into the base. Then, slide the water attachment over the top and get ready to use it.
Press the power button three or five times (depending on the nail you use) and hold the fire button until the nail gets hot. Use the dab tool to load the concentrate to the nail and the carb cap will trap the heat and enable you to inhale the vapor. The flavor and vapor production are outstanding. It allows for huge rips, and one draw is enough to settle you down. While other devices offer faster heating times, few work so well from the first hit.
Dr. Dabber suggests you will get 20-30 uses on a single charge, and we managed over 20, so this isn’t a false claim. You should be able to charge the Boost in slightly over two hours, which is very reasonable. By the way, the battery automatically shuts off after a maximum of 30 seconds every time you heat the nail, which serves as a nice battery-saving feature.
Final Thoughts on Dr. Dabber’s Boost eRig
The Boost is larger and more powerful than a vape pen, but is still a portable rig. While cleaning is relatively easy, it takes longer than you expect, but it is worth the effort because the flavor and vapor you get are so, so good! The temperature settings are ideal for concentrates and it is a sturdy device with little chance of breakage.
- Three nails provide radically different vaping experiences.
- Powerful battery allows for up to 30 uses on a single charge.
- The carrying case is a high-quality accessory.
- Excellent flavor and vapor production.
- Relatively quick heating time; heats up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit in around 40 seconds.
- Doesn’t work with dry herb.
- A bit large for a portable rig.
- It can be confusing determining whether you press the power button three or five times for the different nails.
Review of Dr. Dabber Aurora Vape Pen
Vape pens are allowed to ‘get away’ with being basic because they are relatively inexpensive and designed for portability. However, Dr. Dabber clearly believes that vape pens should be similar to vaporizers in quality, judging by its Aurora offering. While it is not cheap at $99.95, you certainly get what you pay for. You can get the Full Rx package with a multitude of accessories for an extra $25.
Features & Design
One of the best Aurora features is the choice of three atomizers; the Halo, the Dual Ceramic, or the Dual Quartz. The ceramic Halo atomizer is ideal for users who like an even draw, and the Dual Quartz reduces the bitterness of the product, while the Dual Ceramic is perfect for waxes with low viscosity, but don’t expect large clouds of vapor.
This is a beautifully designed vape pen as it consists of three pieces which snap together very easily. The battery connects to the docking bay magnetically and the mouthpiece-to-heating chamber is the only component that doesn’t connect to the Aurora’s magnet. It is a sleek pen with understated LED lights for discretion. If you like a bit of glamor, try one of the Aurora special edition pens. Dr. Dabber teamed up with a renowned Miami graffiti artist to create some astounding designs.
How to use the Dr. Dabber Aurora Vape Pen
Bear in mind that this pen is designed for concentrates and not dry herb. Once the battery is charged, choose one of the three heating components and place it onto the battery. Load your concentrate into the chamber with the dabbing tool. Then, attach the airflow regulator to the chamber and snap the mouthpiece on. Finally, switch the device on by pressing the power button five times.
We recommend holding down the firing button for a few seconds to ensure the coils are working properly before adding the concentrate. Once you turn the Aurora on, it cycles through its LED lights. There are three heat settings:
- Low: Green LED.
- Medium: Blue LED.
- High: Pink LED.
To start using the Aurora, put the mouthpiece to your lips and press the button. It heats your concentrate very quickly and we recommend drawing for 4-6 seconds to get the best results. The device has a power-saving 10-second cutoff, which is followed by a blinking light sequence. There is no danger of switching it on accidentally as you have to press the power button five times to switch it on or off.
The overall performance depends on the atomizer you choose. The Ceramic Halo option probably gives you the most consistent flavor, but the Dual Quartz vaporizes material more evenly, while the Dual Ceramic is good for several types of concentrates. The main downside of the Aurora is that you don’t get much vapor, but you could argue that this is ideal for discreet vaping. Even so, the outstanding flavor makes up for the lack of clouds.
We were surprised to find a vape pen with a powerful variable voltage battery, but that’s what the Aurora contains. It is possible to choose the lowest setting for powerful rips if you fancy a longer session. Another benefit is that the Aurora fully charges from dead in about two hours. We do recommend wiping the parts with isopropyl alcohol regularly to keep it clean.
Final Thoughts on the Dr. Dabber Aurora Vape Pen
Dr. Dabber has brought vape pens into the modern era with the Aurora. It is a customizable device with three heat settings and three atomizers for different vaping experiences. There are even two mouthpieces and, while it doesn’t provide great vapor, the flavor is exceptional. It is light and small enough to carry around discreetly, so if you fancy vaping on the move, the Aurora is worth investing in.
- Magnets attach everything together easily.
- Three temperature settings.
- Sleek design.
- Three different atomizers.
- Occasionally overheats on long draws.
- Poor vapor production.
Review of Dr. Dabber Ghost Vaporizer
The Ghost vaporizer has been on the market for a few years now, and was created as an affordable option for people who want to vape on the go. At $69.95, it is still slightly more expensive than other entry-level devices, but is there a danger that it is now outdated?
Features & Design
This is a well-built device in which everything fits perfectly. It only uses one button to power everything and is portable yet robust. One downside is that the plastic mouthpiece negatively affects flavor somewhat. Even so, it is a sleek and beautifully designed vaporizer that could easily be mistaken for a more expensive model. The standard kit contains a wax atomizer, attachment, mouthpiece, wax storage container, dab tool, charger and instruction manual. You can pay extra for the RX kit, which contains additional accessories.
The Ghost utilizes Titanium Technology to ensure the device heats to the right temperature slowly instead of being red hot on contact. As a result, you benefit from a smooth and flavorful hit without the nasty burnt taste synonymous with cheap vape pens. The coil is made from titanium and is wrapped around a top-notch wick.
One of the best accessories is the glass globe attachment, which enables you to see the vapor you produce. You can also purchase a percolator attachment and a recycler pendant. Both glass pieces allow you to vape your concentrate through water, and there is also a differently-shaped atomizer available which is designed to work with the glass.
How to use Dr. Dabber Ghost Vaporizer
The Ghost is definitely a user-friendly device! All you have to do is load some oil or concentrate on the heating coil, press the power button, and inhale. There are no temperature settings, fans or an extended heat-up time, as you should be able to vape within seconds of turning on the Ghost. Press the power button five times to switch it on and five times to power it off.
You would expect an older, entry-level vape pen to fall down badly in terms of overall performance, but the Ghost is still a worthy starter device. Although the plastic mouthpiece impacts flavor a little, you will enjoy the smooth and tasty hits. Vapor production is surprisingly good for such a small device and, best of all, there is no waiting time! Just load your concentrate, power on the Ghost and start inhaling! As it operates on a lower heat setting, you can use long draws for big clouds and short draws for better flavor.
While the power button shows a blue light when the Ghost is on, it is still discreet. Dr. Dabber claims the Ghost offers up to 400 draws per full charge, but the true figure is close to 300 – which is still very good! It should last you several days if you’re a moderate user, and it fully charges from 0% in around two hours.
Final Thoughts on Dr. Dabber Ghost Vaporizer
The Ghost comes with two atomizers, which is a nice touch, and this saves you a lot of frustration when your first one ultimately dies out in the middle of a session. At the time of its release, the Ghost was arguably the best in its class. While it has been overtaken since, it is still a good vape pen that is decidedly above average.
- Excellent vapor production and flavor quality.
- Very easy to use.
- Affordable starter kit.
- Good battery life.
- Useful accessories are available.
- No temperature settings.
- Plastic mouthpiece can impact flavor.
Review of Dr. Dabber Light Vape Pen
The Dr. Dabber Light Vape Pen is perfect for clandestine smokers, as it isn’t much bigger than a traditional cigarette. In fact, it is so diminutive that you can hide it up your sleeve, nevermind just place it in your pocket! At just $49.95, the Light vape pen is an inexpensive introduction to the world of vaping, but does it deliver?
Features & Design
The standard kit includes the unit, an extra atomizer, a USB Charger, a silicone concentrates container, a concentrates tool and a Quickstart guide, which you frankly don’t need! The Light Pen contains a built-in rechargeable battery, a single button design, replaceable atomizer coils and a one-year manufacturer warranty.
The atomizer is a titanium coil wrapped around a glass wick fiber, and it offers a decent mix of potency and taste. The Light Pen consists of several parts, including a mouthpiece tip you can take off which is held in the pen by an O-ring. There is a sleeve to cover the atomizer which is also easy to remove. It is powered by a 510 screw-threaded battery that also comes with charger. Fortunately, this device is good for beginners because there are no temperature adjustments to worry about.
How to Use the Light Vape Pen
To turn it on, simply press the power button five times, and do the same to turn it off. The atomizer holds around 0.1 grams of concentrate, which is an okay amount for a vape pen, although the Ghost holds approximately twice as much. Once you have loaded your concentrate and screwed everything back on, power on the device and hold the button to heat up your product. It will produce vapor within a few seconds.
We were impressed that it worked so well even when filled to the brim with concentrate. While there is no method of adjusting airflow, the flavor was excellent. You wouldn’t expect such a small device to produce enormous vapor clouds, but the Light Pen does produce nice little wisps.
The main issue with ceramic fiber wicks is that they are cheap and degrade quickly. It also gets dirty pretty quickly, so bear that in mind.
As you would expect from such a small device, the battery is tiny, but it is still surprisingly powerful. While it won’t give you days of use, it is good enough for short sessions, though we don’t recommend using it as your primary device if you are a moderate to heavy user. The indicator light flashes red when it is time for a charge, and turns green when fully charged.
The Light Vape Pen is one of the smallest on the market and is well named. However, despite its size, it offers decent flavor and subtle puffs of vapor. Once you prime the device before its first use, it will take seconds to heat up your concentrates. It is inexpensive, fits in your pocket and lasts long enough to take to a concert or on a day trip.
Light Pen Pros
- Ease of use makes it ideal for newcomers.
- Nice flavor.
- Surprising battery life.
Light Pen Cons
- Cheap fiber wick material which gets dirty quickly.
- Fairly small loading chamber.
Final Thoughts on Dr. Dabber
Dr. Dabber is not a company content with producing ‘average’ items. It is dedicated to becoming the top brand in the niche, and its high-quality products and innovation is proof that the firm practices what it preaches. At present, it is arguably the market leader in the production of dabbing vaporizers, but it plans to conquer the dry herb vaping industry in the future.
The SWITCH is one of the finest vape devices around, albeit one of the most expensive, and if it is too rich for your blood, you can always try one of the budget options such as the Ghost or the Light.
